| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 7/25/2008 8:38:41 AM | For me, it depends on how bad it is. One little typo or an omitted capital isn't a deal breaker.
However, if I get a message that is similar to this...
hey id lik to tak 2 u sum tim 2day ok evn tho im abit buzy ru ok with dat ur hot
..it's a deal breaker.
Also... I think that it is really hilarious that some posters on this thread who *say* they hate bad spelling and grammar, have lousy spelling and grammar in the messages they posted.
And that includes all of you who posted here and didn't start your sentence with a capital letter.
And to those who have said that men cannot spell... based on what I've seen, I don't believe woman are any better or worse than men when it comes to spelling and grammar.

Posted: 7/25/2008 8:41:48 AM | | You have a right to choose not to talk to/associate with the guy at the bar with drool rolling down his chin, you have a right to choose what you want and what makes you happy. You have a right to be picky about grammar. I am too, I state right in my profile I delete the crap, if people don't like it...oh well? I don't have an obligation to make them feel good about themselves, and neither do you. If they really want to talk to you, they will respect your wishes. If not, well that's THEIR problem. Not yours ;)

You must have not taken Instant Messenger 101 Use as few letter as possible to get your point across .
Irrellevant.
If you send a text message that is over a certain number of characters, it just gets split into more than one message.
I do text messaging on my cell phone all the time and I don't need to resort to butchered-English-shorthand.
To me, butchered-English-shorthand shows that the person on the other end is too lazy to put together a proper sentence and doesn't care about how they project themselves to the world... or at least don't care how they project themselves to me.
It speaks volumes about their personality.

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 7/25/2008 8:57:36 AM | It dosn't bother me in the least bit if someone can't spell or has poor grammer . If it bothers you then politely let them know your not interested. Not answering back is just plain inconsiderate. Which is worst , think about it. P.S. Im sure my grammer is off here but I dont care. Have a nice day | |

Do you use periods and capital letters too? What a waste of time. If I'm texting a friend to make him meet me later. I am not writing a full sentence. I'm getting my point across and that is it.
It speaks volumes about their personality.
Haha. Tell me this is a joke. Wow. Personality being...education? Ability to get along with others? Being lazy??

Spelling is not grammar.
If someone has bad grammar, their sentences may seem odd, they use run-ons, etc. That is bad grammar.
Mispelled words are just that, misspellings.
However, writing in shorthand is a completely different ball game.

Yes. Not that hard if you know how to use a phone. And it's even easier on phones with full querty keypads like some Blackberries.
"Haha. Tell me this is a joke."
No joke.
"Wow. Personality being...education?"
Probably.
"Ability to get along with others?"
Not really.
"Being lazy??"
DEFINITELY!
Whether you agree with it or not, that is how you are being perceived by some people.
Now I noticed that you're using full punctuation and capitalization in your messages here. Are you saying you just wasted your time?

Do you want me to critise for for saying 'wanna' instead of 'want to'. I know plenty of people who are terrible typers and writers, but could talk you under the table anyday. It is of no consequence to me whether you criticize me or whether you don't. It is also of no consequence to me whether someone can "talk me under the table any day", but if it makes you feel better to throw personal insults then knock yourself out. I'm not here to debate, just to share my views. I haven't said others have to agree with me and I don't expect others to agree with me. We all get to present ourselves any way we choose; we also get to choose whether or not to respond to emails. Nothing to debate.

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 7/25/2008 7:21:14 PM | | A person has to understand that on a dating site, he/she will be judged based on their profile and the things that he/she says. That's all that people know about you. And if you are a person who writes in chatspeak or can't spell the word "you're," then you've made yourself look stupid. People are well within their rights to refuse to interact with a stupid person. Maybe you aren't stupid. But how is a person supposed to know that, if on your first impression you showed them that you can't string a sentence together? | |

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 7/25/2008 7:28:48 PM | | I would likely respond but I am not impressed with bad/lazy spelling. Typos are a different thing. I really dislike chat words and bad slang in an initial messages. It just makes me wonder what kind of conversation I could possibly have with this person face-to-face. It also makes me feel SO out of the loop if I don't understand the "cool sayings" of the week. I prefer well-spoken/written messages and men. | |

I've never heard or read that Einstein had problems counting money or reading a map. What is your source of info for this? In terms of being a lousy speller... maybe in English, but that wasn't surprising since *German* was his first language.
And Einstein did start speaking a little later than average, but he was speaking in whole sentences by the age of 4.
As a matter of fact he did quite well in school, but only failed his college entrance exam... at the age of 16... two years below the usual age. Apparently he failed because he did not study for it. He later admitted, he avoided following the “unbearable” path of a “practical profession” by not preparing himself for the test.
What you are saying about Einstein is not supported by what is known/recorded/written.

OH NO, the world is in danger of blowing up the next time a nucleur power station switches on. Einsteen never meant to write E=mc2 but Ernie (the premium bond random number machine) We have been busily smashing atoms up based on Eonsteins secret formula for predicting premium bond wins. But thats the not the worst of it. During Einstin's time at the patent office he approved patents for inventions. With the simple slip of the pen, Enstiene managed to grant patents for the Electric Mother, the Teleport Printer and the Vibrator Cleaner. As you all know Eesteiene was Jewish, in 1938 he gave talk titled "Our debt to Ironing" which was widely applauded by the mothers union. What isn't widely known is that in 1954 Iensteim became a strict venetian, giving up the beating of all mates.

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 7/26/2008 5:14:17 PM | For me I can not abide text type as it causes me great difficulty interpreting it. Also I would not reply to any one that has the look of a Nigerian scam.
Spelling is not something I can criticise on simply because for some people this can present a challenge which in no way is detrimental to the individual as a person. In fact it can show a level of courage.
Even using Word to spell check what you have written is not completely reliable, as it can be very difficult to select the correct spelling from a list of words that appear to look the same.
What is important is that a person contacting me shows that they actually have taken the time to have read my profile first.
Given that it makes it more challenging to my self. I always take the time to read persons profile and write an individual message to the person. Also given the choice of having to compromise what it is I am trying to say or a few spelling mistakes. I prefer to accept that there may be a mistake or two, but the context is usually robust enough to be intelligible and more importantly remain in my own words.
