WOW its realy great most people are so anal about spelling & gramer but, yea ANAL is the word.

I have no problems saying I am a horrible speller I also spend a lot of time on this site kicked back in bed in a dark room & I am not real sure how many mistakes are spelling or just stupid typos.

It really is a hot topic though yet there is no spell check box at the botom of this message to check it real quick so ol' well gives everyone a very educated way of telling other how much better they are then the other person,

Get over it come on 30 some freakin pages. Wow this is so one of the "DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF THINGS"

i try not to judge people, but i kind of get this urge to choke anyone who uses the word "supposably" instead of "supposedly". of course, there's the chance i'm just a grammar nazi ;)

Yeah or there is a chance you are just an uneducated and way-too-fussy person. The word "supposably" is not even incorrect. You will find it in some dictionaries, two examples are the "Random House Unabridged Dictionary" and the “American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language”.

Cheers, :)

Why?

Does spelling = intelligence

Are you willing to miss out on someone just for that?

Is everyone who send properly spelt and proper grammar = Smart, good person & better then others.

Are you sure that is how the person is or were they maybe tired or in a hurry?

It is really hard to figure out the truth especially if you never give them a chance.

You might be cutting your nose of despite your face.

let's remember folks - the words A LOT are 2 and not one- I detest emails that are filled with alot.
OR the common mistake of "between you and I" --- no- it is "between you and me"

let us all either write as adults or go back to school.

'let us all either write as adults or go back to school....'
or embrace each other's spirit.....and not sweat the small stuff...

(it's funny that you say that...i'm a school administrator...i'd say intelligent and successful...but am typo queen...thank god i have great secretaries!!...but when i'm on the threads or sometimes sending a pond mail i do make mistakes now and then...and if that bothers you...then it bothers you..but it doesn't bother me...)

i guess it's whatever floats our boats...
rose.

i don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way.....

Dont say a word about it. I know many very whelthy people who have been to college and dont get into the spelling game. If you can figure it out why would you try to make someone feel bad about spelling. come on people English is the hardest language to learn and spelling is not a breeze. Besides this is the internet who cares....

I often get emails from men who either use "all small letters" and/or lots of words spelled incorrectly. Honestly, it is kind of turn off and makes you wonder about their IQ. That said....we all misspell words now and then..don't we? lol I t ry not to be too critical.

I think English being the hardest language to learn only applies to those who speak it as a second language...but if you were born and raised and schooled in an English speaking country you should know how to spell and all that.

For me...the reason I care IS because it is the internet. Out in the world I don't make guys take spelling tests and I often don't see their spelling skills that much. But online, TYPING and SPELLING are the main if not only way to communicate so I have no choice but to see it. Spelling one or two things wrong is not a reason for crucifixion, however, someone who spells everything wrong or 3/4 of things wrong....I wonder how and why and it is very annoying and hinders smooth communication.

Spelling doesn't equal intelligence at all....and I look at things case by case and I wouldn't say oh I wouldn't talk to a guy who didn't have impeccable spelling skills. But as I said, on the internet it is hard to overlook spelling more so than in real life. Further I am a pretty good speller so I naturally notice it and it is just my preference that the guy has a decent grasp of English and can spell fairly well. But if I am struggling to understand you and if I feel like referring you to Hooked on Phonics, it's a turn off.

I think that the statement is overrated. I've never heard it from people who speak 2-3 languages fluently, only from people who speak English (the only one)

Besides, people who can't spell, mostlikely are good in something else.....but for me it's a red flag anyway. If a man can write only something like: "hey...whazup" it definitely says something about his level of intelligence.

Agreed...

If it's just a couple of misspelled words/typos, it's no biggie (I'm not perfect either). But an email/profile that has proper spelling and no major grammatical errors always stands out from the crowd for me.

The use of acronyms ("ttyl"), shortforms ( "w/o") and some slang like "dunno", "gonna" "prolly" are fine.

A major thing that irks me though is when people deliberately spell words incorrectly due to teenage slang... even if the 'new word' is practically the same length as the correct version. You know:

"dat" instead of "that"
"hurd" instead of "heard"
"dunt" instead of "don't"
"n" instead of "and"
"wen" instead of "when"
"ur" instead of "your" or "you are"

Or uses all lowercase letters along with no punctuation or formatting. I'm sorry, but things are a lot easier to read if sentences are broken up properly and if there are paragraph breaks.

And the worst:
Using the letter "z" interchangeably with "s" at the end of words:
"alwayz"
"iz"
"sometimez"

Besides... there's spell-check for a reason, and almost all browsers have the function to alert you of your spelling mistake by underlining it in red as you're typing.

I'm not 100% anal about it (honestly ), but a properly formatted message helps prove that the sender took the time to proofread their message to me (at least most of the time). It's a turn off when it appears that someone didn't seem to care about it at all, especially when I can't make sense of what they wrote upon first read. Basically, it just comes down to really good communication.

I can pretty much overlook some of the grammar problems, especially if a person wasn't born in the US. But things like "their" instead of "they are", or "there" will turn me off instantly. Ditto for lots of abbreviations in an e-mail. I think that this shows ignorance. This is my opinion that everybody should proofread their messages before sending them. I know I do mine.

I have big issues with people with bad grammar and misspelled words but oh well, not everyone is perfect. I mess up a few times myself. I think I might have ignored an email or two if they misspelled something awful. It is a turn off for sure. I've dated a guy that wasn't really good with his grammar and he didn't talk very well either as he used a word like "brung".... LOL I was like... "what am I doing with this guy???" Of course, that didn't last too long since he turned out to be a bad grammar player!

That is annoying as hell and just immature. I am only 20 years old...and I guess I could get away with something like that but even I don't do that. I use certain slangs and internet language and I do use "u" and "ur" esp in text messages to decrease word length. But certain things that are purposely spelled wrong that are longer or the same length....pointless.

If you are a grown man or woman you need to put certain things behind you. People act like it is not a big deal and that people are being picky but your writing expresses your thoughts and is how you express and present yourself to people who are not meeting you face to face , so there is ALOT more emphasis on this skill online than in real life. In real life you may have your looks, charm, body language and you probably speak better than how you type. Online you don't have those things (maybe looks) so even if you are charming for e.g. you need to have a way with language in order to convey it or else your charm will not be evident.

Your typing/written word speaks volumes besides the obvious.

I cannot read 34 pages of posts so forgive if I repeat similar to what another has posted.

I thought I had a problem with bad spelling and grammar until I got caught up with reading a thread in science and philosophy where a relatively young guy from Edinburgh, Scotland, was debating with others. His spelling was atrocious - some may have been typos where it seemed to me he was rushing to get his points down - and his grammar left a lot to be desired too. But, whether other posters agreed with him or not, he was able to get his point across in a perfectly clear way and without resorting to name calling.

If I was a 20 something year old who had received mail from him written in the same way I would probably have dismissed him but that really would be MY loss completely.

It bothers me, also. Back in "olden days", we were embarassed if we were illiterate. Now, people seem to wear their illiteracy like a badge of honor.....

NO! You are not being too picky. It is my experience that a person writes as he speaks. On one occasion, the guy wrote very well, extremely well, but spoke like a backwoods hillbilly.

All people should have deal-breakers; what you can and cannot deal with. My dealbreakers are:

1) table manners
2) grammar and spelling (ie: education)
NOTE: just because a person is educated does not mean that they use good grammar. If they are educated and don't then they are considered "ignorant" in my book.

3) Alcohol dependency

These are things that I have standards by which I live..and date. These three things are unacceptable with me, and therefore, I would reply with a polite "no thankyou". If they continue to email you, at that time it is perfectly "ok" to ignore the email and not reply.

To srmc1982:

I have a guy that you might like. This is what's on his profile.

"Like gone to work. Like eatin out. Seen all I want to see of drama. Like for whillin in woods. "

There ya' go. A real, prize catch, don't you think ??? Sometimes, of course, we all make "typeOs", but come on. I seen it ??? I done it?? I knowed it ?? Please. There's nothing picky about passing up a profile like that; especially if you are semi-educated adult.

Typos do not bother me; that's a mistake in something that you are unaware of; or at least you do know better.

Bad grammar is a whole new ballgame. Those of you that are educated adults and speak intelligently, yet don't want to judge someone (and give them a chance)..you'll soon find out that over a period of time it will drive you nuts. You will constantly be correcting them, because good grammar is important to you, or you wouldn't use it yourself.

I completely agree that bad grammer and poor spelling is a turn off. People don't realize, or don't care, that what they write gives you a first impression of who they are. Haven't they ever heard that its a good idea to make a good first impression! I can't stand the text-message style of all lower case and abbreviated words either. I want someone with a brain. Not someone who is either illiterate or too lazy to write correctly.

Why do they have to speak your language? Are they gonna live outside the USA?

I don't think this is an arrogance. The more you read books - the better you are in any language....or maybe forums might help as well

Well. I have a master's, no 2 masters degrees, and I still make typos.
It's hard on this site, as when you write the profile, if you do not type fast, you will get timed out.
So, its .. hard to answer your Q.

If the content of the profile seems to indicate that there is an educated , open mined, funny person out there , with some views in common with you, but he made up to 3 typos, then I would reply and ask to chat.

You can tell if the bloak is a dummy more by speaking than by e mailiong anyway.
If someone omits an apostrope and it annoys you, Well thats pompousity..lol

If subject and verb do not match, I won't anwser.

" I isnt too good at reading them books on metapysiks, but your a hottie"

No, do not reply.

If a man asks for more phots, also I would not reply.
