| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 6/28/2009 8:39:30 AM | | I wouldn't respond. Yes, pof is a casual setting, but how someone expresses themself in writing is generally indicative of their level of education and literacy. I've taught English and studied various languages, so personally poor grammar and literacy skills are a turn off. | |

Posted: 6/28/2009 8:51:18 AM | Sometimes, I have found that spelling is not an indication of intelligence it is an indication of someone whos mind performs faster than their body and a lack of proofing . I am guilty of this myself sometimes I am on to the next thought and forget about proofing my work it is a habit of mine that I am trying to break but I have not yet.

You'd never know I made the honor roll* when I re-did grade 10-12 English and Math a couple years ago by the way I write now! Just lazy I guess.
N.B. That was the third time I did those subjects. First time in high school and second time in the military so NOT making the honor roll would have been very bad indeed!

Posted: 6/28/2009 5:47:37 PM | I always reply to messages, unless its insulting, which is what i get on a regular basis, the type of insults i got while i was like in secondary school 14 years ago, it just makes me laugh.
As long as i understand, i don't really care about spelling mistakes, my grammar is pretty terrible, so i would be one hell of an idiot to ignore someone for being bad at what i am bad at. lol

I've gotten a few emails that I read four times and still did not understand. No, if there is too much that does not make sense, I won't reply.

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 7/1/2009 11:18:53 AM | Well the gal, I am dating now, can spell, T-O-M-O-R-R-O-W and is an active blogger... We both love writing though, I have not written as much in recent years. But she inspired me and as I write, definantly attempt to be as close to what should be typed. I am using more of my vocabulary as well! Now to answer the question, if someone could not spell a simple word like tomorrow, then I found there were too many things that would get under my skin and I am sure there are things that I do as well to bother others... But spelling is one thing that I think is a definite , if a word does not sound or look right then I check it, online we have many resources at our disposal. (now if I misspelled anything, I will be run off )
Additionally, I go and read my post here in the forums, we have 15 minutes to edit and correct mistakes. Sometimes when I proof-read, I do not catch every mistake but usually catch major ones so I do not look like a complete idiot!
I would more than likely communicate with anyone but would not consider them as a serious potential person to date. As a local host of events, one must be social and open to talking with anyone!

1. Typically bad grammar and spelling is a sign of a spambot of some sort. And I'm not talking about a misplaced modifier here or there; so if it's grammar is to the point of unreadability I chuck it. 2. If they are that careless on their grammar and spelling (and who doesn't realize that the red-underline isn't telling you you've made a very good point), where is the other person's mind?

Posted: 7/4/2009 11:57:57 PM | | It all depends if they seem to be accidental typos, I'm okay, but if the entire message is written in slang, or mixing both capital and lower case letters, I will read it and delete it. First impressions make or break you, and emails like that, give me the impression that a guy may not be as mature as a guy I'd look to date. I think most of us are old enough/mature enough to use proper grammar, especially when we're contacting someone we're interested in dating.

I've gotten a few emails that I read four times and still did not understand. No, if there is too much that does not make sense, I won't reply.
That one, from the OP (in 2007) I wouldn't argue with at all.
A profile full of misspellings and bad grammar *would* be a big turnoff... damn, you write it once and its the "first thing people see", at least spell/grammar check it. To not do that on your profile even says to me you aren't really putting any effort into this site (which probably means you don't put much effort into anything).
As for emails or IMs, it depends... a few typo's wouldn't bother me at all. Horrendous grammar and spelling, ie, virtually unreadable or seemingly nonsense, or "txtspeak"- I wouldn't reply. I also wouldn't "gig" someone for using "gonna" instead of "going to", etc, most things like that wouldn't phase me at all. I deal with IM all day at work, we often use "shortcuts" on words, and I'm ok with that to a point if its understandable, especially in IM. Heck, I've seen some horrible spelling in people in work emails, in a fortune-20 company... so I can deal with it in POF email to a point.
Blatant grammatical problems though ("I'm gone to a tonight concert") would be a turnoff to me unless it was someone foreign (English doesn't always make grammatical sense to foreigners).
