If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond?

Something I have learned being on these threads is that we often know what we are writing and see what we write, but it really isn't what we thought we wrote. We have typos, grammatical errors, misspellings, etc. and can't see them because we see what we intended to write. Even if you proof read something, you see what you think you wrote, you don't see what is really there. I have really tried not to cut on people too much when it is obviously that type of situation.

If someone uses text speak, can't use an upper case i, puts the ' between the word and the nt i.e. did'nt instead of didn't, uses ... instead of using real punctuation, and can't put a return in between paragraphs, that does still drive me nuts.

Use a browser that spell checks or get a good word processing program. If you haven't found your mate, it can't hurt to put the best appearance out there and the written word is your first impression.

No one is perfect with grammar and spelling, but to not at least try to be the best you can, shows how lazy one just may be......

Just as to much "fat" bothers me, so will to many errors with grammar and spelling annoy me to the point of "not" being interested.

Just my opinion.......

a misspelling or typo is not a big deal.

I tend to ignore e-mails with too much text speak. U is a letter, not a word.

and I will definitely ignore e-mails that say things like "hay gurl U R prety kewl. Iy wants ta git ta no U sum. Hit me up sum tiem."

No thanks.

And, I thought this was an interesting point.

Ok, maybe I am missing out on a great person because he thinks girl is spelled with a u. Just like somebody may be missing out on this great girl because I am not skinny enough. But, that is a risk I am willing to take usually.

I cringe at the thought of spending my life with this person and then I write a response that is kind and sugar-coated as to why we are not a match. Many of the men (my age) in my rural area cannot spell, have strange punctuation and no grammar skills. Basically, I think they have no more than grade school education and I cannot imagine spending an evening in conversation.

It's kind of strange to me when people don't take any pride in how they express themselves either with their spoken words or in written language. It's one of the pleasures that just doesn't get old for me. I would like to be an even better writer, speak even more clearly and evocatively, but hanging around someone that simply doesn't value that doesn't appeal to me. It's a personal ethic sort of thing.

I agree with this. My English is far from perfect but, the more I use it and expose myself to literature, the more I appreciate the beauty of the language.

I love the different forms it takes, especially the slang and it's ability to express a multitude of concepts.

These are informal forums so you expect the occasional typo and plenty of shorthand, which is fine.

What I have difficulty with are people who are lazy with spelling or grammar, or type in 'ebonics' or 'text-speak' ('wit' 'n 'dat' only makes you sound like a 'gangsta wannabe').

If you wish to get your point across clearly, then punctuation and paragraphs are your friends. Read your postings out loud before you hit the 'send' button to see if they make sense and you'll go a long way towards getting your point across.

The thing I dislike most is when someones grammar or spelling is so bad that I can't understand the point that they're trying to get across. Or when people don't use the correct form of a word. i.e. there, their, they're, to, too, two, and the one that bothers me the most...your, you're. I know that I have plenty of typos and errors, but atleast I do make an effort. I would expect the same out of anyone I wanted to date.

If it's just one or two words then I know myself that sometimes typing in a hurry can cause spelling mistakes.

However if the whole email is ridiculously hard to understand or they think it's cool to write to me like "how ru 2day? well then they've already lost my interest. It doesn't take much longer to type the actual words and it is very quickly becoming my big pet hate..................

I am going nuts lately with the overuse and misuse of quotes! Why are people using "quotes" to emphasize words that don't need to be emphasized and aren't being quoted for anything! It is driving me nuts.

Then there are people on the forum that don't know the simple [ quote ] function! So you read their post and realize that they quoted someone else but can't be bothered to type an extra 14 characters or copy and past the quote and end quote!

Daggone it, I make mistakes constantly, but geez, these two things are driving me nuts lately!

I don't respond to non spellers. Some people use im or texting lingo and that is fine, anyone with brains can figure out what they are saying. I hate when people tell me I didn't spell right and it is texting short cuts. If I were typing a professional letter I would not do it but in emails and ims and if I text I do. Nothing wrong with short and sweet!

Everyone can make a mistake once in a while, but I proffread any message I write here or back in the world. It doesn't take that long.

I also have a problem with texspeak. Even when I text, I spell words out. And, yes, there would have to be something else in his profile that really stood out for me to regain the interest lost by the spelling and gramatical errors. Yikes! And don't even get me started on typing in all CAPS (shouting) or naked torso shots (gratuitous = empty-headed in my opinion.)

On occasion, whne I have been exchanging messages for a while, I suggest we switch to private e-mail because you can actually be timed out here if you take too long or write too much. So, short of writing in Word and copy/paste, it's easier to do it that way, and has the added adantage of spell check availability.

Namaste,
Ginny

I am a big reader and writer...in fact I spend the great majority of my time reading or writing. So proper spelling and grammar is very important to me. I can't take seriously someone who doesn't capitalize their sentences, use punctuation, or blatantly and carelessly spells words wrong or shortens them, ie "ur" or "u".

I like to text a lot, and when I'm texting I will often shorten words or use "text-speak" but I don't think that is appropriate for online communication. I think it looks immature, and I will make a snap judgement about the maturity of the person who writes like that, I admit.

I can look past honest spelling an grammar mistakes; we all make them. However, I will not respond to somebody that willfully abuses the English language, writing things like 'hey ure kewl' I'm looking for somebody intelligent, and if you demonstrate that you have a 4th grade education level, I won't be interested. I try to keep a Shakespeare or Chaucer book nearby to revive my mind when I go online.

Not really. Unless his email is extremely witty and something he's said has captured my attention.
I too find it irritating to have to translate something that takes me an hour when it should only take a few minutes...
I also hate people that typ3 l!k3 th!5... its childish and annoying.

I don't expect perfection but some emails aren't even readable. I figure if he can't take the time to use proper punctuation and hit spell check then I shouldn't take the time to decode it.

Even if the written message is garbled, consists of misspellings and poor grammar, I ALWAYS at the very least thank someone for the inquiry. It does NOT mean I wish to correspond further with them. Probably the worst messages contain the infamous 'text talk' which a relatively intelligent FIVE year old can accomplish. The fact that someone does not CARE to add the two letters of 'you' and send me 'u' instead for instance, is a sign lacking elementary effort that bleeds into OTHER areas of indolence. Someone who has active neuron firing to me is VERY attractive. Putting concrete thoughts together, which personalize the context of communication between two people is one of the main qualities I look for in a companion. If somebody lacks basic skills or is just plain lazy in the age of spellcheck and online dictionaries, I hardly have any sympathy for them and am not amused at the content of the message. If there is no simplified high level rhythm or flow to the words, stating a declarative idea I have ZERO desire to pursue the conversation . THEREFORE, I am NOT interested. ~slams door~

Also, there are some very intelligent dyslexic people.

Well finally someone has put this in. Some people moan about spelling, grammar. When they should consider, they may have learning difficulties.

You should respond if you like them.

Well i suffer from dyslexic. So don't judge someone you don't know any thing about.
One of the people in the band Rancid suffer from it. And lots of other people do as well.

Well i suffer from dyslexic.

And, yet your post is completely coherent and readable, if less than perfect.

I can handle the occasional misspelling, sloppy grammar, or whatnot. What irks me is when people don't even bother to try. I've gotten messages entirely in text speak. That has nothing to do with dyslexia. It's just laziness. Dyslexia doesn't cause you to say "u" instead of "you" or "plz" instead of "please."

In fact, I find the dyslexics and people who speak English as a second language often are far more readable than other folks, because at least they're putting a lot of effort into what they write.
