| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 11/20/2007 3:29:19 PM | French films I watch without the subtitles but I certainly don't object to them on any film in a language I can't speak.... it certainly doesn't take away from the script in the way that dubbing does - voice-over artists can never quite be the part in the way an actor can
Also there's the occasional humour potential of funny foreign words, too.

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 11/20/2007 3:33:42 PM | Yeah - I've seen a few with Spanish subtitles, and a couple with French subtitles.
The ones I thought were good were Bad Education - about drugs, transvestites, perverted priests etc (Pedro Almodovar film) and Volver which had Penelope Cruz in it. Both of those were Spanish.

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 11/20/2007 3:40:44 PM | Not as a rule, I either get engrossed in the film and can't keep track of the conversation or vice versa.
The only film I've managed was Das Experiment, a German film based on Zimbado's prison experiment. Excellent film.
I do enjoy watching live things like Eurovision with the ceefax subtitles on, the gobbledeegook that gets put on there is highly entertaining.

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 11/20/2007 3:56:37 PM | I've seen a fair few foreign films. I saw a fabulous French film last year, damned if I can remember what it was which is a shame. Had the best shocking moment when the whole audience in the cinema gasped and held their breath for a fair while and I still have no clue what it was all about! One of those you come out asking each other if you worked it out and nobody did. Brilliant.
I lived with a family who have a deaf child while I was in New Zealand and he used to watch everything with subtitles as his hearing aid and implant were not equipped for audio like that. Well I found myself reading along as well as watching, just couldn't help it and didn't really notice either. In fact it can be better sometimes as you always know what someone has said instead of having to ask someone else in the room if you didn't catch it!

so do you watch subtitles films and if so what would you recommend
Das Boot in German with English Subtitles.
There is another film i watched quite recently. Directed by Mel Gibson - Apocalypto. A rather fantastic film with English subtitles that really sets the film up marvellously well. Give it a Google.

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 11/21/2007 1:16:34 AM | Depends on the genre of movie you are after, but my all time favourite French movie is Betty Blue; wonderful, amazing, awesome and other such words (book is great too).
Also Pans Labarynth, as mentioned by other posters. Fab movie.
If you want a huge range of foreign films check out LoveFilm, online DVD rental.

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 11/21/2007 9:29:21 AM | As alot have already said Amelie is a classic & I bought it a few months ago & have watched it so many times. If I'm interested in the storyline of a film it doesn't bother me in the slightest if it has subtitles.

Das Boot in German with English Subtitles.
I remember a while ago the yanks serialised it and dubbed the soundtrack. Totally ruined the film. Sometimes subtitles are better.
There was another film about a Serb and a Croat stuck in a crater in no mans land and having to get along. That was brilliant. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called though so you may as well forget I mentioned it. It's bugging me now though.

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 11/21/2007 9:41:08 AM | yes ive watched a lot of the films other posters have mentioned and enjoyed them all fully.
i would say the argument i hear the most from other people about subtitled films is that while they are reading the subtitles they sometimes miss a bit of the action. maybe its a skill, watching and reading at the same time.

They're usually people who can't read without moving their lips, so I'm not sure if they count.

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 11/21/2007 1:23:52 PM | | Often! I live in Wales, and some great programs are on S4C in Welsh only - which as an English born "incomer" means my Welsh is very basic and very poor. S4C were the first channel in the UK to feature Italian football, and its often the first place to see coverage of both rugby games (regional and international) and the World Rally Championship - its only during the post event interviews you needs subtitles for. | |

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 11/21/2007 1:36:04 PM | | I watch lots of Japanese films with subtitles and I have no problems whatsoever. Have to agree 100% with comments about the Japanese versions of the ring and the grudge being far better than the American ones. Once you get used to the subtitles they aren't so bad, even my kids watch anime with subtitles. | |
|
| Das Boot Posted: 11/21/2007 3:45:54 PM | It just gets better and better. Das Boot is one of my absolute favourite films ever. The cinematography, the emotion, the absolutely dour de-motivation. | |

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 11/22/2007 12:32:37 PM | That's the way and the only way it was with the movies from the West (in my childhood and adolescence time) and now I do know why , and not only that! So, yes, I am pretty accustomed to the subtitles ... too. On the more joyful note - it is nice to listen to the original language and refresh i.e. rusty/dusty French, German or Italian. Funny, how me & the ex went to see the movie 'Purple Rain' back in 90s and wasn't it a blast! | |
