| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 4/30/2008 11:58:18 AM | I have watched films with subtitles.
The most memorable being Das Boot, as quite a few previous posters have mentioned. I have also watched the English dubbed version, but it was preferable watching it with subtitles.

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 5/8/2008 9:40:22 AM | yes I must admit to loving a good foreign movie with subtitles. As already mentioned by many Das Boot remains a classic as does cinema paradiso, I tried watching pans labyrinth the over day, but was so encapsulated by what was going on on the screen that i forgot to actually pay attention to the text But some of my favourite films are from Iceland, and if you can cope with subtitles I highly recommend some of the following
101 reykjavik (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0237993/) Noi Albinoi (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0351461/) Hafið (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0332381/) Íslenski draumurinn (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0260594/) Englar alheimsins (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0233651/)
thats 5 of the best foriegn language movies I have ever seen...

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 5/9/2008 7:18:23 AM | I have more films in my collection that are foreign language than English. The descent started with Accion mutante, then I discovered the joys of Dario Argento (Terror at the opera-amazing film). I came across Amelie on tv, channel hopping and ended up watching the rest of the film. The original French ‘Taxi’ films are good for a laugh. Nikita- pretty much a given, best film ‘cleaner’ ever!
Asian films- The killer, 2000AD, Hard Boiled, Kung fu hustle, Moon warriors, the list is endless.
European films as well- Brotherhood of the wolf (another fine film with Vincent Cassell) Irreversible (not an enjoyable film, but thought provoking never the less.), Tattoo, in fact there are heaps here as well.
The trouble with English speaking films is that the vast majority are American. The Americans seem obsessed with SFX and pay little heed to storyline or characters.
As to the earlier comment about Das Boot being ropey on the SFX front, it may appear like that now, but at the time it was cutting edge, and as far as I am concerned its still THE U-boat film. Try saying that about the film U-571 or whatever it was called!
The other thing that yank films seem obsessed about is making money (How many American pies, Screams, etc etc are there now?). A film is not successful unless it has made heaps of money. Surely success should be measured by the films ability to take a niche subject and turn it mainstream, by it’s ability to take the art of film-making further, to bring out the very best performances from it’s actors?
Not an endless parade of vastly inferior remakes that are cringe worthy to watch and crimes against the originals. Yes this is aimed at you America.
I suppose that sums up my love for foreign films. It’s the desire of foreign film directors to tread new paths and explore new avenues that makes the few lines of text at the bottom of the screen, such a token price to pay.

| do you watch films with subtitles Posted: 5/9/2008 8:25:34 AM | Comletely agree with you hyper. The other thing foreign film directors aren't scared of is an uncompromising ending. Compare the endings of the original The Vanishing to the American remake (ok it had the same director but he hated the version made for US audiences as it took away the impact of the film).
Vincent Cassell? Try La Haine! Superb stuff.
