BY doctorsonix Imagine going to Tescos to buy a bottle of wine , but Tescos had removed all the labels so you didnt know which country it was from , how much alcohol there was in it , how old its vintage etc......You wouldnt know where to start to look for something that suited your particular palette. So it is with electronic music.
Nicely said man! hahaha ill say that from now on when someone ****es about sub genres!
I spin electro house and techno (whatever im booked for or if i play a a long set i play both) and i have to say it takes really being involved in electronic music to bother trying to understand the sub genres and what they mean .... most involved a particular sound whether it be bassline or synth that distinguishes the style of whatever genre your playing!
heres some great electro house djs to look up OH and here is an old mix online of me spinning hard techno at a big rave in new york city a couple years ago
www.easterntables.com go into the site and look for DJ Kilo Live @ Cjs 2005
here some electro producers that rock it!
Deadmau5 Chris Lake Sebastien Leger Herve Klaas Cirez D (Eric prydz electro name) D Ramirez Nick Terranova Bryan Cox Mickey Slim Crookers Hook N Sling Kid Kenobi Dirty South Aston Shuffle
Look these artists up and im promise you that youll shake your ass no matter what style of electronic music your into!
Cheers everyone!

| Electronic Music Posted: 1/11/2008 1:54:18 PM | It seems that the whole sub-genre thing is more important than the music itself. I hate when my friends fight about wich genre is better, or worse, Sure it's true that a list of 30 some genres can get annoying .. but you don't have to hate what you don't understand. And how about when you go to your record store. Could you imagine sifting through the whole store for the stuff you like?
It's more of a guide than anything!! And if edm wasn't broken into these sub-genres. the music would never grow the way it has. I myself spin every trance genre in the book.. But I still use elements from all types of genres. That's the best part And what if someone has created a new sound. Thier can't be a name for it?
Sure, it's true some of these genres can seem similar or the same to someone, but thier not. They just not educated enough and have more to learn. I think that's what EDM is all about!educating to bring cutting edge and fresh newIdeas.I heard some of you list artists and genres on this forum that I've never even heard of. And that's the beauty of it! I say.. don't be a prisoner to ur own genre! Respect the others[genres] and keep an open mind! It's alot funner that way!
Some of My influences; psy, goa, house, any trance, dirty house, chill, electro, techno,(old school)breakbeat.. Massive Attack, Trentomoller, Xpansion, Brandon Block, Matt Darey, Depeche Mode, Deep Dish, Sasha, Tiesto, M.I.K.E.,Richie hawtin, Eddie Halliwell, AVB,PVD, Andy Moor, Steve lawler, Yoji Biomehenika, Mark norman, The list seriously just goes on and on!

| Electronic Music Posted: 1/11/2008 4:37:38 PM | I like it too, though I don't concern over the genres. If it sounds nice, I listen. I'd suggest Dusted, Bent, early Goldfrapp stuff and possibly IAMX to Mr DanyWine. Though he's probably heard them already.
I saw Plaid in Amsterdam. Brilliant though a bit hard for my taste, I like a touch more melody. Speaking of which, do you all like classical too? I think the two might be well connected.
I notice there aren't any females in this thread. It dosent seem to work on them.

| Electronic Music Posted: 1/12/2008 3:43:57 AM | There's nothing wrong with debating all the sub-genres of electronica. Sure to someone who isnt familiar with electronica will listen to it and say "it sounds all the same" but to someone who listens to it, each sub-genre sounds different. Many sub-genres of electronica sound as different to each other as pop music sounds to rap. I do agree the classification goes a bit overboard however. I think there are like 80 different sub-genres of electronica. Myself, I pretty much enjoy anything with a good beat as long as it isnt garbage House or Trance. However my faves are electro, dnb, hard dance, trancecore, speed garage and hard trance. | |

| Electronic Music Posted: 1/12/2008 8:14:32 AM | Amethystium Enigma Delerium Tangerine Dream
All wonderful, spacy, soothing and relaxing. I discovered Amethystium on Amazon when they were listed in the section "what purchasers of this album also bought..." and listened to some samples. Tangerine Dream has been a favourite of mine for as long as they've been around. Enigma and Delerium really might not be considered 'electronic' since they have some vocals, but the music is largely that style.

| Electronic Music Posted: 3/11/2008 11:20:19 PM | I gradually got sick of commercial music and listening to the same muzak as everyone else back in the eighties, and began composing electronic music then as well. After selling my equipment, I took a perpetually-long silent passage, and am about to break it using my laptop, and maybe a live Linux distro booting from my USB key, called pure:dyne. So it is hoped. If anyone would like to recommend a high-end sound-card, BTW, I'm all ears. I've been listening to almost exclusively online stuff offered for free for about 10 years now. Recent inclusions, (on a per-song basis) are works from; - Fieldtriqp - Planet Boelex - Berestez - Sense - Lackluster - Grandma - Sleepy Town Manufacture - Aphilas All of these can be listened to and download from Archive.org. (If anyone comes across Ekwalm [circa~1999], please let me know.) | |
|
| Electronic Music Posted: 3/12/2008 7:53:13 PM | The list would go on forever with me, I love the older rave generation stuff when dance music was exciting and still in its commercial infancy, stuff like genacide 2's narra mind or messiah's there is no law being played out in a field on a mobile pa as you partied as hard as you could before the police turned up to turn it off.
More modern music, Im quite partial to aphex twin he's constantly pushing boundaries about and doing strange and new things, and squarepusher, klute, photek, venetian snares fit nicely into that niche too.

| Electronic Music Posted: 3/15/2008 11:20:06 AM | I've seen some mention of Sneaker Pimps and Delerium, which makes me happy. Recently, I've been getting into LOTS of electronic music like The Knife, Goldfrapp, Ladytron, Junior Boys, usedtobecool, Makeup and Vanity Set, and The Crystal Method.
Though, I'm a super huge fan of chiptunes/8-bit, which I guess would be considered electronic music. A few great artists from that genre would be Nullsleep, Bit Shifter, Random, Sabrepulse, RushJet1, and Disastertron.

| Electronic Music Posted: 3/17/2008 12:09:16 PM | Absolutely love 'electronic' music, it's been my main source of musical enjoyment for about 12 plus years (I do enjoy other music as well of course). I love my music hard, funky, dirty and full of hard-hitting bass. That being said my fave 'genres' are drum n bass, speed garage (gotta love the wompy basslines, yum), hardhouse and hardtrance, breaks, hardcore and electro - it all depends on my mood. lol | |
|
| Electronic Music Posted: 3/18/2008 6:06:06 PM | Just started getting into electronic and been listening to a lot of internet radio. Can someone give me some bands that are in the same vain as:
Boards of Canada Massive attack Venetian Snares Mr. oizo beni benassi

| Electronic Music Posted: 3/19/2008 9:42:44 PM | I love all kinds of music, but I've found my niche with electronica. Been hooked into the scene when I got turned onto Sasha and Digweed (oh yea, deep, dark progressive, kicks A$$).
But nothing gets the body going than hard hitting bass and the rolling basslines, yikes! :) Trance, progressive, and electro, it all working for me.
Anyone on this thread living in socal? If so, where do you go for your electronica fix?
|
| Electronic Music Posted: 3/20/2008 9:21:38 PM | I have an industrial band. www.myspace.com/thedeathsound We do our programming in buzz, use a guitar run through several effects, a looper run through several effects, and we're looking into maybe buying a microKorg when the cashflow restarts... | |
|
| Electronic Music Posted: 3/21/2008 3:47:55 AM | As the years have passed I've been progressively getting into heavy, weirder and the more experimental varieties of electronic. -Skinny Puppy (And they're related side projects) -Coil -Throbbing Gristle -Nurse with Wound -Einstürzende Neubauten -Lustmord -Aphex Twin -Autchere -Kraftwerk
For those of you who are into Tangerine Dream, check out Godspeed You! Black Emperor. They have been described as the organic version of Tangerine Dream.

| Electronic Music Posted: 3/21/2008 5:58:47 PM | RushJet, Great guy love how he takes 32bit or 16bit tunes and turns them into nintendo tracks, very clever reworkings and he's also as i said a nice guy aswell.
Infact most of the people in that community i get on with (I used to remix 8/16 bit tracks myself for a time) Ryan8bit is also cool with compute'her and their live set up "8 bit weapon" where they use things like atari joysticks etc to control the sounds, press play on tape .. theres another one or machinae supremecy who "used" to do c64 covers but are a proper band now.. but off of the back of the c64 tracks they did.

| Electronic Music Posted: 3/31/2008 7:17:25 AM | I like most electronic music I'm exposed to. I started listening to it when I was 12, 13 maybe, starting out with dance-pop and mainstream dance, to the slightly more *underground* stuff no one I work with has ever heard of. lol.
It would be easier for me to type what genres I don't care for. I don't like a lot of breaks, happy hardcore (though cute and oh-so-saccharine) gets on my nerves pretty quickly, and two-step makes me want to vomit. I'm game for pretty much anything else. Some IDM is okay, but I have a hard time comprehending music (of any genre) without some kind of form or structure.
I will say this - I'm a slave to the 4/4 best if that tells you anything.
I'll list some producers and DJs I enjoy later.
