it's a shame that this sound, which is so uniquely tied to American roots music, often doesn't get a lot of notice in our own country ...
That's because you can't mass-market honesty, passion, and a lack of care for overproduction and other gimmicks, and hope to reach the masses. Blues music has been, is, and will always be a niche market with a relatively small subset of the music-loving public since it doesn't focus on catchy throwaway sounds and emotions which are crammed into our heads all day long like quaaludes coated in syrup ..... in malls, Doctor's offices, MTV "awards" shows, and the ubiquitous noise-saturated commercial radio play.
If people really listened to blues music with discrimination, they'd immediately use their Celine Dion CDs for living-room frisbees. But it ain't happening: most everyone mistakes hyped emotionality for deep emotion, and stances for integrity.

I have seen him several times in Philly. He's the best and most entertaining in person.

| Do You Dig The Blues? Posted: 12/14/2007 6:59:12 PM | I started listening to the blues at age 16, on a late-night radio station out of Little Rock, Arkansas. All my friends at the time were into pop & rock. I still like the old blues standards, but in the last few years have really gotten into Joe Bonamassa & Bernard Allison (Luther's son). There is nothing in this world like hearing Joe live... his guitar finesse will make you weep. Catch him in concert if you ever get the chance. | |

| Do You Dig The Blues? Posted: 12/20/2007 7:31:51 AM | I love the blues. The old, the new and the in between. Living in Kansas City there are lots of opportunities for live blues music. We actually have a blues museum kind of dedicated to Charlie Parker, who lived in Kansas City. We have a wonderful blues society here with a great news letter to keep you updated.
I have been to New Orleans, Chicago and Memphis for the festivals as well as the ones here in Kansas City. Beale Street in Memphis is the bomb!
Just some more that have not yet been mentioned:
Marcia Ball Poppa Chubby Anson Funderberg and the Rockets Roomful of Blues Chris Duarte Susan Tedeschi Corey Stevens Luther Allison
and many many more

I read one article on him where he was described as the "American Eric Clapton." Butterfield, also, was amazing on harmonica. No one could play like that guy!

Also, for blues & boogie, Canned Heat comes to mind. Great group there! Alan Wilson and Henry Vestine helped co-create an explosive blues sound during the Sixties and that music still lives on to this very day.

| Do You Dig The Blues? Posted: 12/27/2007 4:59:31 PM | | This is just my take but I wouldnt consider people like Ten Years After, Eric Clapton or even Stevie Ray Vaughan as blues. To me they are more rock than blues. | |

| Do You Dig The Blues? Posted: 12/27/2007 6:49:42 PM | | I have heard most of my favorites mentioned in this thread. I have to add Doc Watson. He is known mostly for bluegrass, but does my favorite song ever: "Deep River Blues". | |

| Canned heat Posted: 12/29/2007 11:26:18 AM | | I will say this I can call Keith Richards a blues guitarist and I will explain why. Last night I was reading an article about the Stones and there was a comment by Howlin' Wolf's longtime guitarist Hubert Sublin. In it Sublin called Richards a blues guitarist, so Hubert is an awesome guitar player and if he calls Richards a blues player, then as far as I am concerned he is. | |

| Canned heat Posted: 12/30/2007 3:25:21 PM | | saw johnny winters in november...oh what a treat...'highway 61 revisited' was pure genius....also saw bb king not too long ago, a real classic...his band is sooo tight... he's brilliant and a cutie besides!!....and to respond to djmac...english rock certainly has it's roots in american blues..... | |

| Mount Rushmore of the Blues Posted: 12/31/2007 6:50:29 PM | I just found out tonight that they are starting a Tuesday night blues jam at the hotel with 4 letters on the King George in Surrey. Glenn Pearson will be hosting and playing and he is incredible. I go from Abbotsford to White Rock and New West for his jams.
If you don't already know this guy, I give you my word, you'll love his work. Maybe see you there. Bring your guitars.
Oh........and HAPPY NEW YEAR all.
