I'm into the blues too.... I love Texas guitar ... and play a couple of easy tunes on my guitar. Ever heard of Angela Strehli, Lou Ann Barton - a couple of awesome blues singers from Austin. Another one is Sue Foley - love her guitar playing...

Echo Cateye's choice.

Has anyone heard the Saffire Blues Band.? Absolutely hilarioius.

There's a CD - Lightning Blues, which has a lot of the greats on it. The concert was recorded, shown at some places and is a double set. Macy Gray does a good 'Nothin' but a Houndog' on it.

Crazy about the blues - in fact listening to some now!

Speaking of Texas and the blues, how about Johnny "Guitar" Watson? Now that guy was great!

It really is amazing how many great musicians and especially guitar players hail from the lone star state. One day my friend and I were talking about Texas guitar players.......................we both went on and on. Here are some that I remember:

Freddie King, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Stevie and Jimmie, Eric Johnson, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Johnny Winter, Herb Ellis, Billy Gibbons, Albert Collins, Lightnin' Hopkins, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Anson Funderburgh, T-Bone Walker, etc.

I love blues. As a matter of fact I'm volunteering at the Ottawa Blues Fest this year. 6 four hour shifts = free entry into the full two week event. Largest bluesfest in Canada. 6 Stages wide variety of music so you can get your kids out as well. I won free tickets to attend the full event last year and I enjoyed it so much I'll probably volunteer every year to get in for free. Some of the bands I like: Elmer Ferrer Band, Dave Maxwell, The White Stripes, Rober Cray, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Todd Snider, Here's a link to the website....check out the list of performers for this year....quite impressive. http://www.ottawa-bluesfest.ca/en/ Buddy Guy played there last year. Always a good line up and a good variety to allow you to bring your kids and then possibly convert them...lol. Last year I went to some of the shows they liked but I made them come to some of mine so as to eliminate a lot of back and forth trips. They ended up liking some of the blues bands I listened to in the end.

the experts say if it wasnt for robert johnson you would not have all these rock bands and such. he was the ambassador for what was to come. i also dig john lee hooker, bb king, STEVIE RAY VAUGHN, joe walsh, eric clapton, yngwie malmsteen actually has some nice blues pieces. its weird becuase "blues" and "jazz" are kinda the same thing. brother and sister. john coltrane, john scofield. love it! nothing like it in the world. its the roots of all music today. of course you have classical as well. but only a certain few claim that classical is truly the roots. all in your opinion i suppose.

I'm good with the classics. I saw BB King and Mississippi Fred for a dollar once in A2.

I like to hear the new stuff, too. Just want to blow the horn for a michigan blues band just getting going. They will be near Grand Rapids, MI playing Westwood at the Crossing. Info on site mobluzband com .

We don't have any full band recordings yet but some of the original stuff by the author is on the website.

Come on down!

I loooove the blues. It's the one genre that, for me, really requires a live performance, perferably in a dark, small, hole-in-the-wall kind of joint. NYC has a few great blues bars, some with a different band every night of the week. Of the locals, I really like Saron Crenshaw.

Is anyone here into blues dancing?

Greeting fellow Blues Lovers....There are alot of you out there I see...
I call Chicago my sweet home and have been graced with many opportunities over the years to see some awesome talent whether it be a national act in a Blues Bar downtown or local band ripping it up at biker bar down yonder....Ive also had the chance to run a OPEN JAM NITE where you never knew who was coming in to play! Yup....Ms Queen of The Blues, KoKo Taylor, even graced us with a Wang Dang Doodle!

I dont have a favorite band to list because it changes with my mood but I think it would be fun to start a thread of LOCAL TALENT so we know who to go see when we are traveling thru your town, or since some of them travel regionally they may be coming soon to a town near you!

My new Chgo fav is
ERIC GUITAR DAVIS
Down Home Chicago Blues

Texas
Holland K Smith
Texas Style

NY, Chicago and now Los Angeles
Dona Oxford

Boogie Woogie Piano Blues

So..where are you and who should we see when we come to your town????

You mean that attached at the pelvis, slowly swaying , one arm hanging and swinging to the groove while the other hand holds onto the back of his neck, his hot breathe on your neck & his hand tightly holding you by the small of your back??

Yup Yup...Love it!!

Last weekend I was at a benefit for the Special Olympics.
Reverend Raven and the Chain Smoking Alter Boys played there, with Madison Slim. Fantastic blues band! No they are not an evangelical blue band...LOL, but an all time great band name though.
My kids 5 and 7 even got to help play slide guitar on stage with the Reverend while he did a solo!
I agree with a previous poster, the blue are best enjoyed live.

Saw Jerry "Boogie" McCain play live, outside in 2001 (he was nearing 70 yrs at the time) and you should have seen and heard that man!!! He was doin' his boogie thang and weaving thru his audience (mic in hand), singin' and blowin' that harp --- the man had women swooning at his feet!! What a performance!!

Same show... Magic Slim and the Teardrops... another treat!

New England bar and restaurant establishments are sadly lacking in support of blues musicans... but the New Boston Blues Assn and local blues musicians/fans continue to breathe life back into this priceless and timeless genre... when asked, my 12 yr old will listen to the blues with me over the commercial junk nearly every time... I've recently turned him on to Jeff Healy, Alvin Lee and Jimmie Vaughan

Love them , play them , and enjoy especially the original artists.

John Lee Hooker , Muddy Waters, Lightning Hopkins, Robert Johnson , Hubert Sumlin, Sonny Terry and Brownee McHee , Robert Lockwood, Memphis Slim, Leadbelly all amazing talents . I have had my kids listen to there music growing up so they would understand where Rock n Roll came from.

I love the Blues, I can listen to it when I am in any mood, and it mellows me out....
There are a ton of names referenced in these posts, all of which I thouroughly enjoy, but I didn't see anybody say Jonny Lang?? I know he is young, but good Lord! That boy can sing the blues, and his guitar rifs are amazing. I saw BB King last year, and It was one of those experiences I wont soon forget...

was fortunate to see gary bartz and george coleman at stanford last friday...what an experience..their music inspired these words, which i left in the poetry thread...

the sax man...
(gary bartz quartet)

red hat, plaid jacket, light lavendar pants
he greets us with song...
'bad thoughts, leave this room
evil, leave this room...'
he blows the sweetest sax
think i smell burnt sage
from backstage

we are now ready
to receive magic
from the blues man

he moves me
grooves me
tickles my soul
with sensual sounds
ever so sweetly he sails
and then
intensely he wails
chills run thru
my body

he puts rhythm
to langston hughes'
'i've known rivers'
overwhelmed
i cry

he joins cables
'for heaven's sake'
ethereal experience
in their cathedral
in the vein
of coltrane

so pure
so spiritual
touching me so
deeply
i weep
in the presence
of genuis

I listen to a lot of Internet radio via Winamp ... it saddens me that there's a dedicated station for pretty much every music genre you can think of (including three stations for various sub-genres of video game soundtracks) except the blues.
