| Single dad's son wants to enlist in the Marines. Posted: 5/22/2008 8:21:58 AM | [Luckily, being raised in a Catholic family, my dad always taught us 1. God; 2. Family; 3. Country in heart - but in practice 1. God; 2. Country; 3. Family in practice. Meaning that we always grew up knowing that God fearing families make up American and therefore are the building blocks of this great country of ours ] Whew,, talk about your propaganda machines...........
"left wing, hate mongers, gibberish spewing= PEOPLE WHO HOLD THEIR ELECTED OFFICIALS ACCOUNABLE! i am so fed up with the republikan garbage being spewed all over the flippin world. and what has that gotten us?? DUG IN DEEP IN THE SAND! WITH NO PLAN TO GET OUT! hmm, now isnt that interesting, that must have been some alternate catholic doctrine you were taught, because the one i was raised in, didnt teach us to fear god but rather to love god. As well,, its not only people who believe in god that make up this country, or what it was built on. this country was built upon the sweat and breaking backs of the people who generally were living in the margins.

| Single dad's son wants to enlist in the Marines. Posted: 5/22/2008 8:26:47 AM | [ Go online, find a couple of pictures of children blown up, ask him if he wants that job. Let him decide. ] better yet,, go into a vets hospital and let him meet a young guy with a wife and a new baby who's just had his legs blown off and has no real skills to get a job and support his family because the military is discharging him as he no longer suits any need they have, and they havent trained him to do anything like the recruiter promised. | |

| Single dad's son wants to enlist in the Marines. Posted: 5/22/2008 1:18:36 PM | Every man in my family is/was/or going to be military. I am proud of each and every one of them. I say support your son. You can gain alot of knowledge in the military. And for really smart guys, they have not so dangerous jobs. You are always going to worry about him, no matter the job he takes. Then again, is he really wanting to go for "getting his war on" or is it something he truly would be proud of doing?
I say try not to be objective to it, and be open-minded to it. BTW--all my men are safely home.

Go online, find a couple of pictures of children blown up, ask him if he wants that job. Let him decide.
Or better yet, take him to ground zero in New York, or Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
Mr Internet, your comment is as callous, as ignorant and as stupid as ANY I have ever read on any forum anywhere in the world.
Apparently you have no concept of what the military REALLY does and what they really stand for. People like you and Jane Fonda need to serve in the military before decrying it or the fine men and women who serve in it.
I lost friends in the first Gulf War and small minded people like you try to make their sacrifices out to be nothing.
So please, before you open that hole under your nose and spout some ignorant diatribe remember that millions of people have died so you could have that right. Use it wisely.

| Single dad's son wants to enlist in the Marines. Posted: 5/22/2008 1:38:14 PM | Calling blown up children collateral damage is pretty callous, anywhere in the world. I'm talking about reality. It happens. One result of combat is you kill children. Why get upset over that fact? It comes with the job. Let the kid see the job for what it is. By pretending it's all gung-ho glory, you lie. The war in practical terms has been the killing of a million people in retaliation against 19 dead hijackers. It has been the overthrow of a ruler, the occupation of a nation, and the establishment of a government that meets the approval of the US. But put politics aside and offer a realistic view of the job of being a marine. Show it all. Judge by the actions not the emotional hype.
Stand still, quit hopping around. When you want to rationalize the death and maiming of innocent people, you talk about abstract things like honor, duty, country, service. But when you are told that the abstract politics behind the war are wrong, false, incorrect, you hop back down to earth and say, they are just doing their job. OK, Mr. Hoppy, that job they do is, in part, to kill innocent people. If there is no shame in it, be proud of it. If there is shame, don't do it. And, let me add that when you turn from the topic to attack someone personally, you have left off discussion and started bickering. You are welcome to have whatever emotional response you like. But if you're going to be insulting at least be original or entertaining, and not tiresome and self-righteous.

Posted: 5/22/2008 1:47:25 PM | | If your son wants to go into the service and you want him to go to School he should join the ROTC it a program that will pay for him to go to School and pay him Base pay pluse on top of that he comes out of it as a LT. check with your major college located near you. I asure you I am not a recurter for the army.

I am proud of my military service. How about you?
OK, Mr. Hoppy, that job they do is, in part, to kill innocent people.
Hardly. War is conducted against enemy troops NOT civilians. For example, both wars in Iraq have been conducted with the safety of civilians in mind. Never mind that in GWI, the enemy was putting civilians at their facilities to keep us from attacking them and placing anti-aircraft positions on top of Mosques and hospitals thus ENSURING civilian casualties. Terrorists are the ones intentionally targeting innocent people, not the military. Learn the difference, know the difference.
But if you're going to be insulting at least be original or entertaining, and not tiresome and self-righteous.
Right back at you Mr. Hoppy.

| Single dad's son wants to enlist in the Marines. Posted: 5/23/2008 5:55:54 PM | This has taken a life of its own. Started out with one single dad requesting some assistance with an important topic involving a major decision in his child's life and has turned into a mess. Read so many pointless and untrue statements that it was comical. Those that think they are in the "know" are in the wrong. Those that seem to be b____ing the loudest never served. Hear it time and time again. Those that also complain the loudest are those that are unable to see every single side of an issue - good or bad. For that first Dad - you know what needs to be done, you got volumes of good info here. Good luck to you and to your child whatever decision is reached.
My two cents! (couldn't resist)
I served my country in the Infantry, I served my country protecting a power generating site, I served my country in an elementary school teaching, I serve my country on a fire truck, I serve my country on an ambulance, I serve my country in an emergency room and lastly I serve my country by raising one great little kid!
War sucks-plain and simple. No disagreement there. Nobody wants peace more than the soldier, NOBODY! Memorial Day is upon us and for those that served, thanks brothers and sisters! For those that have not, enjoy a burger and beer on us!
PS - For that person that mentioned going to visit a shelter, go for it! They are full of screwed up young men (non-Veterans) and screwed up young pregnant little girls (non-Veteran). I know, I work with them!
