Liberals do not want to win in Iraq.
Seems to me like things are getting better in good ole Iraq.

However, never convince a liberal of that, it is all doom and gloom all the time

What is Win?

If this is working so well why didn't we listen to Gen. Shinseki and do this 5 years ago.

Food for thought what about The Mehid army truce?

It ends leap day. Ironic timing. Did we win or does he love us now?

We had 5 KIA last week from here. I don't call that getting better.

Such a simple question, but with a very complex answer. Unless you yourself have been there you can not say if it's better or worse. You are getting you infomation through the media, that spins it the way they want to. As for McCain's 100 year statement..he never said he wishes us to be there, but can see how on the current plan we could be. We have been in Korea 55 years..Germany and Japan 60 years and Central America going on 90 years!

I was in the Military for 20 years and served in the first Gulf War.
When I volunteered, I knew the risk that I was taking. So does anyone who volunteers for the Armed services.
War is not a pretty thing, but sometime a necessary thing.

First thank you for your service. True of course in those countries you don't have insurgents or sunni on shia violence and Japanese or germans aren't setting up Ied's on the autobahn, setting off bombs in the middle of Tokyo or berlin.

jed451...I would like to think that the IED and insurgent threat will end some day, but I don't really see it happening. The Iraqi Army and Police are very slow to take over, as is needed for us to scale back the mission. The way it will most likely end up is just a few large bases left that will have troops ready to go out and save the Iraqi Army and Police when called on. I hope McCain is wrong...but just pulling out would cause even further chaos. My view is we screwed it up, now we gotta fix it. You need security before we can fix all the other problems. We need to stop fighting over why we went in and what was the plan. That's history. Let's get a do-able plan to first scale back the US involvement will maintaining security. Then worry about bringing everyone home. Any longer over there and I'll have dual citizenship...haha

"War is not a pretty thing, but sometime a necessary thing."

...and Iraq is definitely NOT one of those cases of necessity. Nothing more than a one-sided pissing contest at the expense of countless lives.

Small example of what will happen if we pull out right now.
This is a story of what happen when the British pulled ou support in Basra

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The images in the Basra police file are nauseating: Page after page of women killed in brutal fashion -- some strangled to death, their faces disfigured; others beheaded. All bear signs of torture.

The attacks on the women of Basra have intensified since British forces withdrew to their base at the airport back in September, police say. Iraqi security forces took over after British troops pulled back, but are heavily infiltrated by militias

Small example of when the U.S. went inOne in five Iraqis is now displaced.
The UN estimates that almost 5 million Iraqis have been displaced by violence in their country, the vast majority of which have fled since 2003. Over 2.4 million have vacated their homes for safer areas within Iraq, 1.5 million are now living in Syria, and over 1 million refugees inhabit Jordan, Iran, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey and Gulf States. Most Iraqis are determined to be resettled to Europe or North America, and few consider return to Iraq an option. Iraqis have no legal work options in most host countries and are increasingly desperate and in need of humanitarian assistance. They face challenges in finding housing, obtaining food, and have trouble accessing host countries’ health and education systems. Their resources depleted, small numbers of Iraqis have returned to Iraq in the past few months – between 28,000-60,000 people – but Iraq’s struggling government recently warned that it can’t accommodate large numbers of returns. Most of those who returned were subsequently displaced again.

Fine.

As long as everyone has learned how and why they were wrongly lead by Bush and Co. who lied thru their teeth to go to war with Iraq.

And that the people have finally stopped believing that the next step is invading or destroying Iran... or Venezuela... or anywhere else for oil, bases, profit for multinationals etc....

I am so glad we went into Iraq, they are better off without Saddam and Chemical Ali.

Others I guess do not see the improvement.

Iraqis: life is getting betterMarie Colvin
MOST Iraqis believe life is better for them now than it was under Saddam Hussein, according to a British opinion poll published today.

The survey of more than 5,000 Iraqis found the majority optimistic despite their suffering in sectarian violence since the American-led invasion four years ago this week.

One in four Iraqis has had a family member murdered, says the poll by Opinion Research Business. In Baghdad, the capital, one in four has had a relative kidnapped and one in three said members of their family had fled abroad. But when asked whether they preferred life under Saddam, the dictator who was executed last December, or under Nouri al-Maliki, the prime minister, most replied that things were better for them today.

Only 27% think there is a civil war in Iraq, compared with 61% who do not, according to the survey carried out last month

U.S. Ambassador Salutes Kurdish Region
U.S. Ambassador Calls Kurdish Region 'Shining Example' of the Way Iraq Should Be

Departing U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad expressed regret Thursday that he is leaving Iraq mired in violence, but he pointed to the country's relatively peaceful Kurdish region as a "shining example" of the way things should be.

The Afghan-born Khalilzad, who turned 56 on Thursday, pledged to keep working for peace in Iraq if he is confirmed as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations but said it would ultimately be up to Iraq's divided leaders to make hard compromises and unify the country.

Why would anyone believe what a Bush run government is telling them, his administration has been filled with lies. This whole time lining the pockets of his buddies with ties to (Halliburton, Lockheed Martin) with no bid contracts, as well as with rebuilding efforts with Hurricane Katrina. The first Gulf War was waranteed, because of Saddam's aggression with Kuwait, the second one not so much. We have only 25,000 troops in Afghanistan looking for the supposed mastermind of 9/11, we are in Iraq why? This country is now in debt $366 billion to China, and growing on a daily basis, while the infrastructure of the country goes to shit. The fact is people get rich from wars, and it sure is not the American people (a select few do), I pray that our economy can be saved, and for the troops put needlessly in harms way. Who benefits longterm from these rebate checks, CHINA since it is their borrowed money being sent to American citizens to spend on Chinese imports at Walmart. It is a very scary feeling sleeping with the enemy. China is making tremendous strides while we are in decline, I am deeply worried about the state of our country as everyone should be. Al-Sadr (Shiite's) still has a cease fire in place, what happens if he decides to lift it, complete and utter chaos again in Iraq.

Well i guess the main reason is oil and America want`s a friend in the Middleast or a military base. The crazy thing is Saddam Hussein actually hated Osama Bin Laden and would of liked to capture him himself and turn him over. Not sure where the country is headed but i think the US will still be there in 10 years time.

Okay very simple question, why is America fighting in Iraq?

Very simple answer.. A number of people are getting awfully, absolutely filthy, rich from it. Certainly not you and me, but those who positioned themselves to benefit from it, in advance. It's not about scruples, ethics or honor. It's IS all about riches, beyond our wildest dreams.

"However, never convince a liberal of that, it is all doom and gloom all the time "

>>>Dick Cheney is a liberal?

Since we're in the irony department, today America has told Turkey that its invaded Iraq for long enough, time to finish up and pull out.

Will someone put this into Wikipedia, as the definition for the word, "chutzpuh?"

as for "everyone volunteering for the military knows the risks"...why were there so many in '91 trying for conscious-objector status, claiming they only went in for the college money? Even Jessica Lynch admitted she only joined b/c she couldn't find any other way to get into a teaching career if she stayed in her little town.

America is fighting in Iraq for reasons that were sketchy in the beginning...and have only grown sketchier w/ the passage of time.

We have no clear cut objectives (at least MANAGEABLE objectives, at this point)...there seems to less enthusiasm by the majority of Iraqis w/ our presence w/ each passing day...we have assisted in the provoking an Iraqi civil war....and we have essentially ceded the northern part of the country to the Turkish military, ensuring a Iraqi-Kurd vs. Turkey conflict that may light off the entire region.

The invasion of Iraq was a stupid idea.
Continuing to stay in Iraq while the country crumbles is an even stupider idea.
Thinking that "winning" in this type of miasma is still possible is sheer idiocy.

We've lost.
We need to get used to that fact, and cut and run, while the running is good.
Anybody who thinks that we can successfully occupy a Muslim country for any length of time w/o incurring a true jihad against us is living in a fantasy world.

Here in the real world, we made a bad mess and leaving ASAP may be the only way it can be cleaned up...
If it CAN be cleaned up...

The short answer to the question "Why is America Fighting in Iraq? is:

1. Because, as everyone knows, despite the illusion of "democracy" and "political system," the Ultimate Truth in this topic is that sociopaths with beaucoup money have used people as pawns since humankind's first battle over land (aka strategic position)/resources.

Why is no member of the Bush family over there? The British let Prince Harry go to Afghanistan to fight. Bush calls his war "a noble cause." Why then don't his own family members take part in it?

Why are we fighting? It's hard to sum up in a friendly sound bite, but here's the short version:

A psychopathic dictator whom we brought to power who had a known history of using weapons of mass destruction looked like he had them again. Furthermore, there seemed, at the very least, to be a kind of Hitler-Stalin pact between said dictator and a violent ideology that had attacked our country 2 years earlier.

Supporting this move was the fact that, under UN law, the regime had lost its sovereignty and regime change was mandated. Also undoubtedly a factor was that the country controlled about 9% of the worlds energy resources.

We weren't occupying any Muslim countries on September 10th, 2001. Jihad has been declared on us whether we like it or not. You cannot appease these people, they won't stop until the entire western world is destroyed.
