Well a lot of interesting and varying opionions I feel the same way as OP and although I read the negative opinions of some re International charities they are my preference. Charities like Compassion www.compassion.com for a few measly bob a month you can sponser a child for all their needs for schooling support etc.

The child will also write you a regular letter letting you know of their progress, how they are going at school etc etc etc. The child is protected as correcpondence is not direct (thank God) as too many sickos out there.

I think sometimes we can use too many excuses of why not to give such as admin costs etc; with a little research there are plenty out there that are doing a great job, and helping even just one child through life (shcool, food and the basic necessities) is so rewarding. Try it and see!

As for giving a wino a dollar for the next nail in the coffin not into that, as do not really think they are at the stage they enjoy it anymore anyway. Maybe taking to a nearby shop and providing a nice meal or snack would be more thoughtful. I guess everyone has their own opinion and respect yours as well

You can't use vouchers for cigs or alcohol in NSW either. I know cos I had a foster daughter (bonus kid) for a bit. Tho I have heard of people ( children in the DoCS system) selling a $20 voucher for fifteen to get smokes...or dope or whatever.

As far as charities go, I tend to support local things - like my own community, and the Westpac Rescue helicopter. I don't think I could ever support overseas sponsor children because I wouldn't beleive the money is going where it should.

My folks are in some scheme that supports children in Fiji (was originally thru Rotary I think) - but they do it with goods and services...and they mostly are personally delivered. Last time Mum and Dad went over, they took two pairs of shorts and t-shirts and packed the rest of their luggage with 'stuff' - books, pencils, shoes etc. Of course, they are in a position where they can afford to do it.

But I was proud that they chose to do it this way - they have a personal relationship with these people, and have developed an empathy for communities who are not as comfortable as we are that didn't really exist before for them. It was all just pictures on the telly before-hand - now it's real. And they get that buzz that you get when you do something to help - without being asked.

I believe it's our duty to help people who aren't as fortunate as we are.

Our good intentions aren't so good when we start saying who is worthy of the gift and how it should be spent. That takes away the whole meaning of charitable gift.

A. In some charities, I do actually.

I know there are areas where money is 'wasted' and I've seen first hand how irresponsible some campaigns have been. But, for the most part, if it can change the life of just one person then it was worth it.

I worked out how much I donate a year and it's 10% of what I earn. It's not breaking my back to give that either. Sure, there are tax rebates but did you know it's enough to pour back into a charity; enough to sponsor one more kiddie?

Often we are in fact paying our own professionals to go to developing countries as advisers. Don't even start me on 'military aid', blight on the landscape that it is.

Medicins Sans Frontiers dont pay our own professsionals to work in developing countries per say. A registered nurse or other health professional gets $1200 per month and they have to commit to a period of 6 to 12 mths time ..far below the award wage. So they arent paying anymore than a gratuity really because 1200 a month isnt going to pay the bills or the mortage left behind is it?? They do get lodging and board though with MSF. On the other hand the UN pays on a band starting around 54K heading up to well over 100K depending on location and experience. On top of that is location allowance, resettlement allowance and a multitude of other allowances.

As to Vinnies vouchers... in NSW they are restricted to healthy food choices , no lollies, chippies or smokes... not everyone using these vouchers are on welfare, some are just everyday ordinary people who cant make ends meet due to ever increasing food , housing and petrol prices (currently $1.65 per litre in NSW) be buggered if I would begrudge a child a treat,,, however the smokes can be done without
