We are going back to only defending Israel after Iraq is stable.
I sure hope not ... that's the crap that got us into the mess we're in right now and will continue to be a problem for us. Israel has their own nuclear weapons ... they can defend themselves just fine. We need to back off of that once and for all and let them fight their own battles.

Israel is over there greedily steeling land and settling it to their heart's delight and we are supporting that ... that's just wrong. There are hundreds of sanctions against Israel and we are looking the other way. If we can excuse sanctions against one nation, why not all?

Our current administration is nothing but a bunch of warmongering greedy scum bags. It's clear why they are supporting Israel ... birds of a feather flock together. Israel is greedily grabbing all the land they can as fast as they can from the Palestinians (with our full support) and we are busily doing our best to grab all the oil we can as fast as we can ... even if it means having to drop a nuclear bomb on Iran.

Sign on a church billboard (I believe it was in Ireland):
"If you were born where they were born,
If you were taught what they were taught,
You would believe what they believe"

^^ Not sure I quoted word for word, but tis something to that effect.
The drastic change of content from watching news such as CNN or Fox vs. CBC or BBC is astounding. When I'm in the States, I cannot find any objective news sources - radio, TV, print ... all say the same damn thing.
I have alot of respect for many Americans - have met many in my travels; it's unfortunate though that all this propaganda Americans have been fed is being taken for the truth.

It all comes down to a matter of "He said/she said" - who's lying to us?
The sources I read could be full of sh!t, just as the sources read by supporters of Bush could be full of sh!t.
In the end, I'm using logic and common sense after taking in both sides and looking at history.
The current U.S. government needs to go.
This isn't about protecting democracy or the survival of America (both of which are in jeopardy - the threat comes not from terrorism but from the U.S. government) - the power and money dreams of a few are affecting millions world wide - and not in a positive way.

Now the world, mainly the Europeans, are afraid of Iran.
Really? This is news to me.

Czech officials are saying it is now harder for them to in explaining the need for a U.S. missile defense system, which U.S. officials say is needed to ward off attack from Iran.
So, this is the reason the Czechs need for buying a US missile defence system......interesting.

they know we are finally reducing the policing the world.
The US polices the world? Who elected them to do this? The RCMP? And when are they going to start reducing?

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states should handle Iran.
Now this is just funny.......

we get the last laugh and these fish forum lefty Canadians ... know it.
Love those fish forums......

I don't see this pattern changing with any administration, certain canidates for the next election might put a band-aid on our national wound, but the fact remains that morality and humanity have no place in U.S. politics. The good will always be too busy performing damage control to effect change. I gotta say though, having all my choices and freedoms stripped from me, I don't think I've ever felt safer, this bubble called a life is hella comfy.

Really? This is news to me. It's never too late to start reading some news unless you're a hermit.

So, this is the reason the Czechs need for buying a US missile defense system......interesting. Haven't you heard about Russia's concerns of missile defense systems in Poland and at the Czech republic. It has ignited the return of the bear.

The US polices the world? Common knowledge, old news.

Who elected them to do this? There was no vote, common knowledge.

The RCMP? Now that's funny. And when are they going to start reducing? Now. And when the EU becomes one true entity, America will sit back and relax. For years now the EU has been telling other nations what to do, how to behave and what's needed. Haven't you been reading any news this past decade alone?

Now this is just funny.......You think the Arab nations are not arming themselves? Not concern of Iran? Especially Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE ? Where have you been? Arabs are Sunnis, Iran is not Arab, they are Persians, Shiite Muslims with nuclear plants.

There are hundreds of sanctions against Israel and we are looking the other way.

The U.N. Human Rights Council has spent the full period of its existence investigating Israeli "violations" of human rights, to the exclusion of all other nations. Of all the nations in the world, Israel is the only one to earn the special status of being permanently placed on the UNHRC's monthly agenda. First, the UNHRC examines Israel, and then, if there is any time left, they go to new business. To date, there's been no time left.
Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota has had enough: "You've got countries like North Korea, Burma, Zimbabwe where you have state-sponsored brutality, and what we have is deafening silence," he told Haaretz. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved legislation advanced by Coleman aimed at cutting off funding to the UNHRC.

The UNHRC is getting a bit of attention among the Washington establishment, as well.
Assistant Secretary of State Kristen Silverberg called the council's first year a serious disappointment. She reproached member states for abandoning their responsibility to defend suffering peoples in countries like Sudan, Burma, Zimbabwe and Cuba and instead devoted their energies to attacking Israel.
The argument that Israel displaced hundreds of thousands of Arabs collapses when one shines the light of history on it. When Israel won its war of independence, Jews were forced to flee by the hundreds of thousands from their homes in Arab countries. According to an estimate by the House Foreign Affairs Middle East and South Asian Subcommittee, as many as 850,000 Jews fled Arab states following Israel's rebirth in 1948, their wealth, land and property confiscated.

Israel absorbed its refugees, who are now integrated into Israeli society. The Arab states interned their refugees in concentration camps, where they formed Islamic terror societies.
Yet the UNHRC makes no judgment on why the "refugees" are still in camps 60 years later. Instead, it blames Israel for the misery of the camps they live in, as if it were Israel who concentrated them there.
Since Israel's restoration, the U.N. General Assembly has adopted 681 resolutions against the Jewish state regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict, 101 of which condemned Israel for the plight of the Palestinian refugees.
Just what is it about Israel that invokes such universal hatred that countries like those mentioned above get a pass for serial mass murder while the UNHRC focus all its attention on tiny Israel?
While we're on the subject, why is tiny little Jerusalem, barely a suburb compared with the world's major cities, the most-watched and most important city on the face of the earth?
Of all the nations of the earth, why Israel? Israel was founded on the ashes of the Holocaust, settled by survivors of Hitler's madness who had nothing left but their lives and the clothes on their backs.

It's foundational rallying cry was "Never again" – a reference to the Holocaust – and it is one of the only genuine Western-style democracies in the Middle East; an oasis of freedom surrounded by a sea of malignant dictatorships.
Yet even Western democracies hesitate to fellowship too closely with Israel lest they offend their Arab neighbors – the same neighbors who built the concentration camps, spawned the terrorist movement and have provided it with material and support for years. That is who the West fears alienating.
Then there is Jerusalem. It is the most-watched and most analyzed strategic city on the face of the earth. It is the pivot point upon which Middle East peace, or Middle East war, is balanced.

First statement: " Now the world, mainly the Europeans, are afraid of Iran."
The reply by MichelnoAngelo: "Really? This is news to me."

I think that was news for many Europeans, too. Just recently I read a long discussion on this topic and someone was writing in very bored way "How long do we need to follow this farce?" It was pretty voices telling how the US needs the wars and nightmare scenarios to sell her products of war industry.
Nota bene, if a leader of one country agrees with political nonsense of another country, it does not mean that people are agreeing with him. In some European countries there are at this moment in top positions people who are willing to play a certain role (yes-men) just because of their interest in their career (playing on international stage). Take, for example, the president of France: man whose only wish since younghood has been to be the president - who cares for the content, the title is essential.

In msg 95, Motown said:

Hey bookworm, why don't you let the person I originally directed my comments to respond? Are you his personal apologist or what?

No, because I'm not apologizing about anything.

How do YOU know what he really meant?

Because I read what he wrote, and took it at face value.

Why are you continuing this from your end, anyway?

Because I get really tired of the same tired rhetoric about anybody who disagrees with the Bush administration being labeled an "America-hating, terrorist-loving, surrender-monkey" etc ad nauseum. Terms that get bandied about all the time in these forums. It's very reminiscent of the words of Hermann Goering.

Look, HE was the one that joined in expanding the discussion by singling out one small comment of mine and making some ridiculously didactic "ends don't justify the means" nonsense.

If you feel that he misunderstood what you were trying to say, then you should have told him so. But for you to take offense on behalf of an entire generation to which you do not even belong is a bit presumptuous.

If I misconstrued his meaning I'm perfectly willing to apologize, but to HIM, not you.

I didn't ask for one. Based on Scorpiomover's response in msg 97, do you think you owe him an apology?

If you're going to cut & paste an essay from somebody else, at least have the intellectual honesty to make it clear that you are doing so. Presenting an essay by Hal Lindsey as your own by not citing him in your post goes beyond being merely tacky; it's dishonest.

Neopol, in msg 84:

But NIE report #2 is the same thing....a 3 page declassified summary of a 140 page report, condensed & distributed roughly the same way as that flawed 1st report. I personally dont see much of a difference when comparing the two versions at face value.

While it is true that the 2002 NIE on Iraq was flawed in many ways, what made the problem infinitely worse is that when the administration made an unclassified summary of it, as was requested by certain members of Congress at the time, all of the caveats were stripped away (specifically when it came to the doubts, and there were many, regarding whether or not Iraq had a nuclear weapons program) and what was left was a portent of "impending doom". You can read this assessment for yourself, here:
http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/13jul20041400/www.gpoaccess.gov/serialset/creports/pdf/s108-301/sec10.pdf

In fact, before the war Bush and others often downplayed or omitted any mention of doubts about Saddam's nuclear program. They said Saddam might give chemical, biological or even nuclear weapons to terrorists, although their own intelligence experts said that was unlikely. Bush also repeatedly claimed Iraq had trained al Qaeda terrorists in the use of poison gas, a story doubted at the time by Pentagon intelligence analysts. The claim later was called a lie by the al Qaeda detainee who originally told it to his US interrogators.

There isn't always concensus in NIE's. There are sections and notations for dissenting opinions from the various agencies who participate in their compilation.

/////////////////////

The question of pressure on the intel analysts and manipulation of intelligence by the intelligence community in 2002 is not cut-and-dried. The section of the 2004 Senate report dealing with pressure on intel analysts is heavily redacted, but the two statements that are left state that no evidence of pressure was found. As far as manipulating intelligence goes, my impression is that it didn't happen in the NIE. The job of manipulating intelligence was the job of Douglas Feith and his Office of Special Plans. Their sole purpose was to find any intelligence which fit the White House's pre-formed decision to invade Iraq, and ignore anything that contradicted it.

One thing that I think is clear regarding the current NIE, is that those in charge of writing it did not want to have Bush blame them for "bad intel", as he did the CIA regarding Iraq.

And now for a view from the other side of the fence

Iran: Washington lied

Posted 09-12-2007 , 1124 GMT

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini on Sunday said the recent US intelligence report on Tehran's nuclear program proves that Washington has lied both to the American nation and world peoples. The report released by the US National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) "has distorted the truth according to which Washington has taken Iran's peaceful nuclear issue to the UN Security Council," he told reporters, according to IRNA.

"Today, more than any other time, the US administration is less reliable and its decisions are less creditable," he added.

Hosseini conveyed the report had reiterated that the current process of Iran's nuclear activities are fully peaceful, adding that the US can no more use the pretexts on the basis of which it sent Iran's peaceful nuclear case to the UN Security Council.

charles, do you think you could find us something less biased than inter press news? It's so blatantly left wing, it's not a 'news' organization in the true sense...
Information is an agent of change. Since its inception, back in 1964, IPS has believed in the role of information as a precondition for lifting communities out of poverty and marginalization....Providing news and content: producing stories and analyses, which explain how events and global processes affect individuals and communities, especially the marginalised and voiceless.

True news organizations do NOT 'produce' news...they 'report' it. IPS has an agenda - and that isn't to fairly report the news. As a former newspaper publisher, this is one source I would not trust for a news item.

Politics is a joke! the only thing that matters in this world is the fair and just treatment of people , human beings , not political bullshit , there are no sides to anything unless you are a bigot then take your side and become a useless human. the only thing that should matter is that we all come together to make this a good world to live in. stop taking sides and follow the truth . There is only one truth andyou need to find it.

But hey, why let rationality and facts get in the way of a good red herring.

That would be the same rationality that lets you ignore that atomic weapons did not exist and couldn't have been a consideration for that reason, when the US entered WW2? The poster's point was valid, the red herring is on the end of your line.
But that's typical Ottawa bullcrap....

^^^^^^

Liberals, and especially Canadian ones like Charles, as a rule make no sense.

that’s odd because, YOU don’t make “any sense” and I find your statement “obnoxious”

also sir, the topic is “how the US has suppressed information“, not “how to bash one of your own”….

back on topic, today, retired CIA field officer John Kiriakou who was present when Zubaydah was interrogated was quoted as saying he did not know about the CIA’s interrogation tapes or the fact that they have been “destroyed”, these “interrogations” included the use of waterboarding…

hopefully, there will be an appointment of a special counsel to probe this case so we can end this administration’s ability to use its own agencies to suppress truth

I suppose my enlightment came from having a father and uncle who were tortured in the Nazi Concentration camps (and we are not Jewish, contrary to most people's belief that only Jews were murdered). How silly we people as a whole ... and shame on us Americans for not educating ourselves and questioning what's going on and coming to be.

Here you go ... please take 47 mins of your time to get educated. Does ANY of this sound familiar to you?

And, could you really see Iran accepting that idea, despite its obvious advantages?

Pardon me, but when you claim legitimate news organizations such as CBC as having some bizzare left wing bias. It's very difficult to imagine something that would meet your "standards."

Anything that reports negative press about Republicans, is instantly classified as "biased" in your cognitive schema. I have better things to do then chase after your red herring.

Umm...

That's what I pointed out, that Germany did not have and were not going to use nuclear weapons. I did not ignore the fact that they didn't exist, I pointed out that Germany did not have and were not going to use them, I would have thought that anyone with any sense would have understood that (I guess I was wrong).

The poster's point was valid, the red herring is on the end of your line.

The posters point was not valid because he implied that nuclear weapons were one of the reasons to stop Germany (how can it be a reason if they didn't exist?).
