Why do people say you have to love my dog/cat/animals

My girlfriend has a cat and I'm quite fond of it, I even drove 30 miles not long after I met her to make sure it had enough food and to let it out for a couple of hours when she was away for the weekend. I'm quite happy to stroke it or tickle its tummy AFTER WHICH I WASH MY HANDS but I wont pick it up or kiss it and I certainly dont want it in or on the bed whether I'm there or not. After all it does what cats do in its litter tray and then scratches around in it!!! I wouldn't think of going to the toilet and wiping my hands on the used toilet paper before going to bed so why would I be happy about the cat doing the equivalent thing?
btw Iread this somewhere a few months ago "If your dog was bigger than you it would still love you. If your cat was bigger than you it would eat you."
Despite that I can put up with the cat but there is no way I would ever get involved with a dog owner.

Simply because until they know you better, the pets are more important than you.

There is no correlation between a person and how nice their pets are. In particular, I would avoid 90% of dog owners as I tend to dislike many dogs. The likelihood is that even if things progress, they would sooner get rid of you than the pets..

It is not an issue of 'competing for attention' as pets are not human, and do not have romantic relationships with you.

"If your dog was bigger than you it would still love you. If your cat was bigger than you it would eat you."
Hahahahaha! Dang ! Never thought of it that way before.

I have a dog and I have a cat. "Love" them both!
If the apartment manager allowed more, I'd have 2 cats.

I've always had dogs and cats... and kids and kids and kids and kids, lol... not the goat kind. (Foster mom for many years, retired).

So, I'm not a cat hater or anything like that, that's for sure.

But yep, if my cat... who I care for very well and truly enjoy having her around...
suddenly became super huge and way bigger than I...
her cat instincts would have her batting me around,
chasing and pouncing,
having fun,
nibbling here and there,
and finally eating parts of me,
just as she instinctually does with any other animal smaller than herself!

Now some of the other "cat lovers" out there will declare that no way their special cats would do that.
Good thing you'll never have to find out. LOL!

I don't ask anyone else to love my dog or cat. I'm a package deal, so to speak, but ya don't have to love them.
If you say you "dislike animals", then we aren't on the same page in this life. That's all. Everyone is different.

Yes, having animals can "tie you down", as some posters pointed out.

For me... my dog has paperwork that allows her to go ANYwhere with me except for into an ICU unit of a hospital.
So if I want to take a trip, or whatever, I just tell her "go for a ride" and she'll head to the van and go along with whatever comes next.
Or, I have family/friends that would gladly have her visit them for awhile.
My cat... do I have enough food/water/litter pans, (even though she is used to 'going' outside and never uses a pan during normal daily life), layed out around the home? If there are, then I can go. Drove to GA for 10 days and she was fine when I got back.

Although I bet she wished there had been a few little animals around in here that she could have batted and played with and eaten parts of...
even a teeny tiny human would have been fine enough with her.

"It's pretty sad when most people think more of their pets and put them ahead of people ... No wonder human relationships have all gone in the toilet..." Rachass

Relationships haven't gone in the toilet because ya have a pet. Ya have a pet because relationships have gone in the toilet!

'Animals' were never meant to be pets in the first place. Fish are not meant to live in glass tanks, birds were not meant for cages. Dogs are wolves that WE, in our arrogance, have selectively bred to conform to a certain look and behaviour. Not so with cats or any other 'animal' for that matter. Wolves are meant to roam, hunt, and scavenge, not lick our faces. We humans are, by nature, selfish, self - absorbed, narcisistic, arrogant brutes. We place ourselves ABOVE everyTHING and everyBODY! Because we are so hurtful towards our own specie is why we turn to 'animals' for comfort and companionship.

BTW: How doya get the little quote box to work?

WOOF!

I just had a single panel cartoon flash-

A large bed with a dog sprawled at the foot and a cat nestled on a pillow. A couple are making the creature with 2 backs.
the man is looking over his shoulder, frowning as grandma, in nightgown and curlers, is climbing into bed.
The woman says " Well, she's part of the family too!"

Been done, I'm sure.

Other then the fact that we are part of the animal kingdom i really don't know what else your point is supposed to be krdog. I don't know but to me it sounds like you hate your own species.

We humans are, by nature, selfish, self - absorbed, narcissistic, arrogant brutes. We place ourselves ABOVE everything and everybody! Because we are so hurtful towards our own specie

Speak for yourself krdog . I am neither selfish ,self absorbed ,narcissistic or an arrogant brute . Neither do i place myself above everything and everybody. If you hate being human so much well you know how to stop don't you? Must be terrible to hate yourself so much.

Ya have a pet because relationships have gone in the toilet!

No i have a pet because before my father died which he didn't know was going to happen, wanted to go to the spca and save a dog from being put down because they had far too many animals to keep.

Pets are a wonderful thing to have. When your feeling down or stressed out they know. I think an animal can tell when there master is upset. Often my hamsters cuddle with me more when I'm having one of those days. I always feel better after holding my hamsters(I have 3 hamsters). My hamsters are my babies and no way I'll ignore them when I'm home and I always fuss about them.

It would be easy to love a womans pets the first night you met her

But if she gave you the exact same curry or stew night after night it would get boring

So a variety of pet flavoured dishes would make it possible to love her pets prepared and cooked in many different ways

Personaly I can say that sometimes pets are more than just pets. One of my 2 dogs is a trained service dog, There is no way no how that I would get rid of her for any one that I was just dating. Yeah she is close to me a lot of the time is her job! But then again, I dont feel that everyone needs to love her just respect her. I can hope that they would love her but I know that no everyone loves dogs.

As for my younger dog he is in training for search and resuce.

I dont keep my pets around to just be pets they must have jobs to and earn there keep, I do love them though.

Because they want to be with someone that REALLY enjoys animals and could never imagine living without them. Obviously Fido and Fluffy play an important part in this person's life, so if you don't like cats or hate the thought of walking a dog then maybe this is not the best situation for you. There are plenty of folks out there that treat their pets as family, and good for them. If you take good care of them pets will love you no matter what. You sure as hell don't get that from the average relationship.

If I hate both cats and dogs or allergic to both...and you have them... then it'll come down to who will you choose them or me? yes this type of competition is really ridiculous...but I know some will pick their pets...I've heard it happened to people! It's not a question of attention...who said it was anyways???...it's whether people can LIVE WITH THEM and if one of us can't live without them, there is a problem. Obviously those types of animal lovers prefer their pet's attention over people's...ok so maybe it is a question of ATTENTION! Haha..

Eh. I don't prefer the company of my pets over that of other humans (ok, sometimes I do...,) but the bottom line is that my pets are here to stay. If that makes me incompatible with some women, so be it. I don't really demand that people love my pets, or even like them as long as they aren't abusive or hostile towards them.

People that dont like animals wouldnt be very happy coming to visit me because one cannot walk into my house without being greeted by frisky little schnauzers. They make themselves at home on somebodys lap and usually give kisses. I also have three parrots and a cat. I just prefer to be around animal lovers.....like they say....love me love my dog!!!

Pets are great and i dont mine if a dog comes close so i can pet them or just play with them, now cats i dont get along with them but we both seam to stay out of each others way so yes pet are great company and companions. But I dont belive that pets are allowed in bed now if they cant respect the way i feel than why should they except me to love thier pets. I have had yellow labs most of my life and when the childeren was growing up they had thier pets so it was not unuseal to see 2 to 4 dogs in the home but they were not allowed to sleep on or in the bed, they had the rest of the house to lay in and all were mainly house dogs not in a kennle or on a chain on a leash yes.

Me and parrots et al have a love hate thing going on

We hate each other equally but I think I would love them if roasted and served with a few veggies

So I wouldnt even contemplate humping someone with a house resembling an avery or even someone with just a few of he vicious feathered monsters who expected someone to like them as much as they did or at all really

Vicious birds are what air rifles and being able to give women a fake phone number were invented for

It's really quite simple:

It's code for "I'm not getting rid of my pet(s) to placate you".

As it applies to children, it goes without saying - no loving parent would ever entertain such a thought. Some suitors, may however, incorrectly think that they can force this decision point with an animal.

This disclaimer serves then to forever pre-empt such a ridiculous notion. After all, the pet was there long before you, will likely be there long after you, and in most cases offers unconditional love.

How you YOU going to compete with that?

Cheers

I guess because they are a part of their lives? I have two dogs, but I wouldn't state "you must love my dogs". No one is going to love them as I do. However, I do expect them to like them, and if they "grow" on them/love 'em...It's all good!

Yes, this states pretty well how I feel as well. My dogs are a HUGE part of my life and while I would never equate the love I have for them with that for a child, there's no way I could be with someone that doesn't at least treat them well. I do train and show my dogs so they are extremely well behaved and pleasant to be around, so even guys that didn't consider themselves animal lovers have been won over by mine. On the flip side, I dated a guy that had the most obnoxious, spoiled dog I've ever met in my life and it became clear quite early on that it was going to be a problem in our relationship, because there was no way I would ever be able to live with that dog. I think if you do have pets and want to date, it's a good idea to really put extra effort into making sure your dogs are well socialized, obedient, clean, etc. so they aren't such a hard sell for someone.

Because there are people who do not like animals for many reasons.
I don't like cats, so if someone said 'must like cats' I would not correspond with that person.
I don't like cats because my son is severely allergic to them, so that also means he could not visit us.

In addition, if I fall in love with someone, and they don't like my dog, I have a problem, because I am not getting rid of my dog!

I am glad to know that you think if you like a person you will like their pet!
But not all of this issue is about training and well-behaved pets.

Why are people say in their profile "you have to love my dog/cat/or animals"

Maybe because some people seem to think that if they are dating someone and they don't like that person's cat/dog/pet, they'll just get rid of them? Pets are important to people.

Perhaps you should not be getting involved with people who have pets, since you are allergic/don't like them?
