I can't see why guys think its only women this stuff happens to. I've met guys mentally abused in the past and were in bad shape after it was over. And guys with other different forms of abuse. All of them has the same problems women who were abused had. I'm glad I'm not the only one who realizes it can happen to anyone. | |

We come from a very normal, middle class family. I say this so nobody blames my family for what happened. Neither of us reported it and neither of us knew about the others experience until we were adults. I would say 7 out of 10 women I know personally have been raped or molested. My one regret is not reporting it but I didn't do so because there is still a stigma against victims and I didn't have any harsh bruises or broken bones to prove what had happened. | |

Posted: 1/4/2008 9:14:57 PM | It's sad, true, and one of the main reasons I am so adamantly against people who try to find abuse where none exists.
But I think if you were to talk to a lot guys you'd find the same thing -- and not always from the first scenario that may pop into your mind: the drunken father.
Much of the day to day disciplining of children happens at the hands (literally) of their mothers. I've known men with all types of horror stories to tell from over-zealous cops who took the law into their own hands to a life spent being shifted from one foster home to the next. | |

Posted: 1/7/2008 3:11:22 PM | It is funny how much abuse isn't reported because of the fear of living through it again, fear of the attacker, and because you are too young to know how to report it/embarrassment etc. People that talk about it can be accused of trying to get attention for talking about it? Geez, I can not imagine why in the world anyone would be talking about abuse for that kind of attention. "Oh yeah, when I was a kid my dad used to hit my head against the wall so no one would see the marks." Why in the world would someone use that comment to seek attention? What I have experienced are women and children that have been victims and don't run around "bragging" about what they experienced. They don't report what has happened. They have physical and mental scars for the rest of their lives.
People don't know what others have endured. Hopefully the people who have read this thread have done and will do what they can to make sure they don't keep a cycle going, don't abuse others, and help others that are abused, if they get a chance. It isn't easy for anyone to discuss their abuse. I know the thread was about women being abused, but it is so valid that a male child was abused and just kept the cycle going as an adult, and adult men have been abused, but the statistics are much smaller for men. | |

Posted: 1/7/2008 4:56:32 PM | 90% seems ridiculously high, in my humble opinion ;) unless you count every single form of being hit on even as abuse? I know a lot of girls and about 15 % to 20 % have some history, but nothing to make the Dr. Phil show.
The fact that so many young girls are terrorized in the world makes me sick. Not just in North America, with fathers/brothers/uncles doing unspeakable things, but in other parts of the world where their bodies are mutilated because a man said it will keep them faithful...ugh...the world is miserable but I don't think 90% miserable.
remind me to call my daddy and tell him thanks for making me always feel safe and protected -- in a weird way, it's very comforting to know that if anyone had messed with me my dad would have buried him under the front porch :D | |
