| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/12/2007 2:27:17 AM | 000missyooo, thanks for observing my oberservation. I didn't observe as much as I should have!
Howdy Morningglory, Just because the guy says he has a permit, doesn't mean he does. I'd want to see the permit, before he started showing me his big guns. Or is that his small gun collection, or just his small piece, I mean his small gun. ooh shoot, the one he carries in his pocket. I mean his holster.
In all seriousness, I still think theres a strangeness about a man that has to bring his permit and his gun with him on a date, sorry. He will bring the permit, because he will have something to prove.
If he doesn't bring the permit and gun; brings flowers instead, I would think he likes you more than his guns! Wow, if this happens, you could be one lucky woman!
That is just a little off in my opinion. Chela

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/12/2007 4:50:03 PM | | Most guys are attracted to guns, they're just kinda cool. We love playing with fake weapons when we're kids and we like the real ones when we grow up. Lots of guys would have explosives, rocket launchers, artillery, tanks, and nuclear weapons if they were legal. They're not bad guys, they're just guys. | |

Unless it's his profession that requires him to carry a gun, such as a cop, security guard, FBI By that analogy, only mounted police and REAL cowboys should have horses.
Some of the nicest and sanest people I know own guns, hunt, enjoy shooting sports. I personally own a couple of long guns. Haven't hunted in the last couple of years, but I think the OP is either over reacting or is another one of those people who wear red flag glasses. Cindy O

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/12/2007 5:53:58 PM | The fact that this guy has told you of his collection and such - should be some hint that he is not trying to hide anything. Also, he took the time and effort to take a course to be officially certified for a concealed weapon - there are many people out there carrying guns everyday, that haven't taken this step. You should be happy your man has a hobby he enjoys, and one also that he has the responsibility to treat the weapons for what they are...
I grew up with guns in the house, it was not a cause for fear because of one simple fact -- we were taught to RESPECT them as what they were, deadly weapons. Growing up, if I was caught pointing a toy gun at another person - I was in trouble, by teaching this respect for others on a toy gun, I learned very young that a real gun was to be respected too. I now listen to the news and hear of the tragedy of children getting guns and killing a friend, and everyone blames the guns -- No, the problem is that these children have never been taught that guns are dangerous, they are not toys, and they are not to be played with.
Now let me ask a question, Would you have these same feelings if the man collected Japanese Swords?

My biggest interest is shooting/targeting. I am not worried about what others think any more
Good for you! I was at the indoor shooting range yesterday. It was crowded and nearly half of the shooters there were women of all ages.

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/12/2007 6:39:40 PM | Shooting guns is a blast. (pun intended) I could have gone to the range tonight. Sadly. I am home doing nonsense getting ready to deal with more nonsense later in the week. NO. I ain't tellin either. In between the nonsense I'm posting nonsense.

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/12/2007 7:59:29 PM | Gun's are a good thing they keep honest people honest. If every American owned a gun We would not have as many bad guys either..They would be less likely to break into homes knowing the home owner has a gun. Which could be larger than the one they have... When you unarm the American people the honest will give up thier weapons. But the criminals however are not known for thier honesty they will not. So keep the honest armed and the dishonest won't make everyone else such and easy target...
Also gun's do not kill people!!!People behind the gun's kill people!!!
Since he is legally able to carry a concealed weapon at least he is not a criminal..

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/12/2007 9:03:31 PM | ^^^ well said the people do the killing and use the guns as a tool.
Nuts with guns is a bad thing.. however if guns were outlawed then only the outlaws would have them.. not good...
Growing up in the country and in the south, guns were/are a way of life. Almost every home has a gun. At least a shot gun, 22 rifle, gun for big game and many a hand gun.

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/12/2007 9:16:19 PM | Guns are a part of American heritage. 90+ million people in this country own at least one firearm (legally). If anything you should feel safer with this person, knowing that he is knowledgeable about personal defense.
Owning firearms or collecting them does not make him/her a "nut". Firearms ownership is on the rise. Statistically (FBI stats.) speaking, states and localities with the least restrictive gun laws have lower crime than those with the most restrictive laws (D.C., Philadelphia, Detroit, L.A., etc.)...
I find your posting to be completely obnoxious.

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/12/2007 9:50:40 PM | ~OP~ I belong to two organizations. ACLU and NRA. Not because I'm a gun ethusiast, but because it's my Constitutional right to own any gun that our military men/women carry. Of course, that has gone to hell because if I have an assault weapon, I'll probably be confused with a terrorist and go to jail (which is a crock, but reality.) I have the right to test for a concealed weapon permit, so I did. I own and keep guns in my home and there is a valid reason for this: I live alone, in the country and twice I've called 911 only to be blamed for the problem. treated like a crazy woman who isn't fond of strangers in her own home. Forget that crap. When I call and need something, I want help, not harrassment. So, after 18 years working in a system that is so corrupt it's beyond pathetic, I'm not only a gun owner, I'm on my way to a concealed permit and I will just take care of my own self. All those who are supposed to help can STFU and spend my tax dollars at the local Starbucks because I don't trust them and I don't need their brand of "help." I never believed there would be a day when I would turn pro-gun in my own house based upon the treatment I have received from those paid to protect and serve. PFT on them. | |

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/12/2007 11:08:15 PM | I'm a pretty typical California tree-hugging liberal- and politically quite anti-gun. But if you were my sister, I wouldn't worry about you dating a gentleman who had discussed his gun interests and collection with you in advance. As others have more knowledegeably offered, somebody applying for a concealed weapon permit is showing responsibility and respect for law.
Violence is (sigh) still a mainly male misbehavior (even though women usually drove us to it, lol). You are smart to be concerned, but look at his character vs. hardware.

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/14/2007 9:51:04 AM | | I am a single white male who happens to own a few handguns. I bought a 22 for target shooting when I was about 24and at the age of 40 I bought a Smith andWesson 38 special to keep in the nite stand.I recently at the age of 49 bought a small 32 snub nose for personal carry.I feel security and protection are important for myself and loved ones. Its a cold and cruel world, law abiding citzens are often viewed as supicious for owning guns.Itstime for that to change.Bad guys have always had guns an made us the victims.Criminals, crazies and terriorist can pop up any where and any time.I am not parnoid just prepared. | |

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/14/2007 10:21:01 AM | A couple of things to thing about,
He has been checked out by the FBI and the Local Police and does not have any felony, or Drug/Alcohol arrests.
Think of a gun like a spare tire or car insurance.
You hope you never have to use any of them but it is better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have it.
In CT some scum did some real damage to a family in a very nice neighborhood that never had any problems.
Random violence can happen to anyone anywhere. Some people just like to be prepared for anything anytime.

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/16/2007 7:32:08 PM | Just my 2 cents.
I've had a permit for 6 years and in that 6 years I've only carried about 3-5 times.
I believe him when he says when he wants to.
So why did I get it if I only carried so rarely, well a police man stopped me from going into a store one day when I was carrying openly. (a constitutional right in Arizona) The store prohibited it. He suggested getting the permit and that's what I did.
There are something like 200,000 permit holders in AZ. Makes us fairly common!

he just finished a course which will allow him to carry a concealed weapon. He works at a bakery
That explains it. He needs protection because he handles a large amount of dough.

I've been invited out by a gentleman who seems like a really nice guy. He's employed, has his own home, is always polite on the phone, sex isn't even brought up at this time.
But he mentioned that he collects guns, he hunts and he just finished a course which will allow him to carry a concealed weapon. He works at a bakery and he lives in a decent area. He said he just wants to be able to have a gun on him if he wants to.
I've agreed to meet him for dinner tonite and I'm trying to be open minded and give him a chance. But I am not a fan of guns, they do not interest me at all.
What I'm wanting to know is those of you that have guns or know gun nuts, what your take is on the personality of that type of person. Do average people have guns around "just because"? Is there anything I should be worried about dating a guy who is into guns?
Do you trust your states Law Enforcement?
If so, then trust him, because they apparently approved him to carry it which means he went through the proper testing.
If you don't trust them, then you have to do a judgment call.
Gun collectors and people who shoot for a hobby, are no different than those people who might have an attic full of Barbies or collectible plates. Except the gun guys can sell their stuff faster.

| Gun Enthusiast - Should I worry? Posted: 12/16/2007 9:32:03 PM | Everyone seems to have caught the one aspect of the OP's date - he was up front and honest about his guns. Aren't there dozens of threads about openess and honesty in relationships, and how most of them are started by people who were with someone who wasn't open and honest? I hope things work out for the OP and her gun totin' baker. | |
