Everyone seems to have caught the one aspect of the OP's date - he was up front and honest about his guns. Aren't there dozens of threads about openess and honesty in relationships, and how most of them are started by people who were with someone who wasn't open and honest?
I hope things work out for the OP and her gun totin' baker.

Why would this fall under the open and honest thing?

I'm actually rather amazed that she would take offense to it. Because people own guns they are somehow messed up in the head?

She acts like he came out and said that he might have herpes but the doctor said it was safe to have sex so long as there are no outbreaks.

Being a security contractor and certified armorer, I have a lot of guns. I enjoy going to the range and shooting, trust me its a great way to relax, sounds crazy , but its true. Go shoot with him sometime, you might find you enjoy it, plus it makes for different date. For most of us who own guns, we view them more like tools, rather than a way to make ourselves feel powerfull. Stop worrying.

well looking at the current situation, it depends on the person. meaning a person with a gun that wants to take a stand against crime. must do so, given the chance and a willing and able person that chooses to defend the freedoms. we have and care for that are so greatly Ignored. criminals prefer unarmed people, but a person that has a gun can and will be able to defend themselves against such an attack. you look around these days and well violences is at an all time low, in the united states of america? why is that well people are sick and tired of being taken advantage of by criminals. the ones who rape or muggings or car jackings or home invasions. things like that are why people choose to be armed and willing to die for a cause that is so great. sometimes you can depend on the police department, but some times well they won't get there in time to stop the the intruders or anything. but like I live about 45 mins away from the nearest police department. um I choose to be able to defend myself, I am a proud gun owner, I don't plan to be a victim of violent crime and I urge other people to do the same.

laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...
Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man". --- Thomas Jefferson

guns are the least of things to worry about, just walk through the kitchen and look at all the things that are dangerous.

its his hobby and aslong as he practices safe handling and storage i wouldnt even worry abaout it

Thanks everyone. Getting to know Carl, as well as reading this thread, has really opened my eyes about the average citizen having guns. I am feeling much safer and pretty good about my choice to date this man.

Carl is a very responsible person, I think its a matter like someone on here said that at least he's legal if he ever feels the need to have the gun rather than not having a gun and finding that he needs one. He's a really great guy and I'm enjoying getting to know him more and more.

What I'm wanting to know is those of you that have guns or know gun nuts

I am not aware of a single murder by someone with a legal license to carry a concealed weapon. Not saying there has never been one, just that I have never heard of one. I would say this guy is great protection to take to the grocery store to keep an eye on that guy in the checkout line behind you.

The fact that he identified that he collects guns is never a bad thing for this reason: it shows honesty.
Perhaps it is logistics, OP. Many men around here own firearms. Women as well.

I like the answer in here I am going to chime abit late but ..Hey better late than never.
As an Alaskan, guns are a way of life here. I have carried a gun for about 20 years now.
In 04 I recieved my concealed weapons permit.. I put my gun on right before keys.

OP at least this guy, told you. I am a fraid I would forget. It is just my shoes to me anymore.

I am impressed that he is up right. Tells you ahead of time the whole nineworks.
I am also glad to see that you will give him a chance..
One thing I always try to stress to others it isn't the gun that kills but the person
pulling the trigger..

I am glad for all the imput since I am in the dating world.

Simple fact; there are 2 kinds of people who have guns Honest and dishonest.
Honest people purchase "legal" firearms and use them responsibly, dishonest people who acquire guns by whatever means and use them with disregard.
Even in countries where firearms are not legal, dishonest people acquire them easily.

The fact is that if a person has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, he has a clean record. No DUI, no assaults, no violent crimes or felonies. So they don't typically have a propensity to commit crimes or be violent.

I keep my weapon dry and my gun clean........... Always..

Legal, responsible gun ownership doesn't bother me at all. I'm not entirely comfortable with guns around, but that's mostly because I've never been around them.

I agree with the others. If he's getting a permit to carry, he's pre-screened for you. If you prefer him not to carry on dates, just politely say so. If he isn't required by his profession to carry, then he should honor that request. If the relationship progresses, you might ask him to take you to the shooting range. You may just find something that you love doing together.

Personally that would not worry me. It is the one's who are secretive and paranoid about their gun collections that I would worry about. I grew up in a family in which guns were around for protection and hunting. My brothers received 410 shotguns at their 12th birthdays.

As for myself as an adult I held jobs which required that I be able to qualify with a side arm and shotgun. That was many years ago. This past year a friend took me out to the range and I must admit I enjoyed getting back into target practice. I wasn't a bad shot at all for having been away from the firing range 15+ years.
A lot of people collect guns the same way as some people collect cook books or matchbox toy cars or any other collectible. Some for historical value, other's for the $$ value of rare guns that will increase i.e. as do coin collectors.

And then there are the good ole boy's who just like to go down to the back 40 (acres) and kill off those darn coyotes and wild hogs.
Worry? Nah, I don't think the man you described sounded dangerous at all.

you only have to worry if the guy is like "Sledge Hammer" (tv show of the same name) or Tackelberry from the "Police Academy" movies.

If you sleep with your gun on the pillow NEXT to you...you might be a gun nut...

If you talk to your gun like it's your lover...you might be a gun nut...

If you clean your Desert Eagle .50 with your lower member...you might be a gun nut...

If he can quote every Clint Eastwood "Dirty Harry" line from memory...he might be a gun nut...

If he has more than one FULL gun safe in the house, he's a relatively SAFE gun nut...and qualifies as an armoury!!

If your man plays with his guns more than with you and/or his pecker...he might be a gun nut...

Thinking back to my childhood, the one thing that got me to be extraordinarily careful with guns is when my uncle sat me down, showed me how to work a 12-ga pump shotgun, and had me fire off a single shot...which knocked me on my 10-yr old butt. After that I was EXCEPTIONALLY careful about dealing with firearms...and you can be dang certain I've always handled every weapon as if it were loaded.

A little training early can make one HECK of an impression...and lead to careful use of the tool.

The thing you need to rememer, OP, is that you can not define this guys personality based on one hobby that he has. Just like with anything else, there are different reasons that lead people to either embrace or reject firearms. I am one of those so-called gun nuts everyone is talking about. But, that does not mean that I am a militant, trigger-happy, future serial killer, lol. More than anything, I'm fascinated by the mechanics of all of the different types of firearms and a bit of a history buff, the exact same reasons I'm interested in muscle cars, old buildings and motorcycles. I wouldn't worry too much about this guy, hon. If all of the other signals you get from him look promising, give it a chance. And, IF when you feel completely comfortable, let him take you to a professional range with a litttle .22 You may be surprised how much fun you have, and end up joining our ranks. Good luck.

No. I think that you should date a guy who doesn't have a job, doesn't own a home, lives in a an area that's not decent, brings up sex immediately, and is as afraid of guns and all that they represent as you are. Seriously, you really seem to have no insight into the whole issue. And if you are are truly open minded, this gentleman can surely enlighten you.Are you as afraid of criminals with guns as you are of law abiding citizens with them? Criminals are ubiquitous. We are their prey. This man doesn't want to be a victim. People like him make our society better, in my opinion. If you cannot fathom this and be supportive of him in this endeavor, then do him a favor and don't date him.

I'd say the guy is a little gun happy, HELLO!

I don't believe this at all. My aunt and her new husband has different kind of guns, and knifes for that matter. They just like collecting them, there is nothing wrong with it as long as you honestly believe that he is a rational person with a weapon. I don't know why people do it, but that is just like people always have knives hanging on their pockets, they do it because they are wanting to feel important for whatever reason it maybe. If he seems fine with you I wouldn't worry to much about it.

Morning Glory,
I am the average rural American woman, well maybe not"average", but I do own guns. I grew up in a family that kept guns; used for hunting and for protection. We were all taught to respect and how to handle them. I keep guns in my home and in fact have a concealed carriers license also. I can carry a gun legally; have never pulled it and pray I never have to.

Just because people own, collect, and/or use guns does not make them dangerous or fanatical. In some cases it's a cultural thing or even a man thing.

I personally would not be interested in a man if he had an aversion to guns.

As long as he doesn't have a basement that contains over 75 guns hanging on the walls, he hasn't gone over the deep end yet!!

Enthusiast, not a worry.

Sledge Hammer-type mentality...some worry. Remember to duck when you hear the gun clear the leather.

Sgt. Tackelberry-type mentality...just remember to duck a LOT at any unusual noise...

I personally wouldn't date anyone who has a gun anywhere near him. Well, good thing that in canada, guns are not a common thing.

Even if he's a professional, I wouldn't want my kids to be near a gun. Though I have no kids now, it's a concern I would have for them. I heard that even professionals need a safe to keep the gun, which is reassuring.

Now, someone bringing a gun to a date, that's more than I can handle, I would rather say 'no thanks'... just IMO

I was in the Army, and now that I'm out, I also carry all the same permits. The concealed weapon class is only a day long. You could take it. In fact, you should take the concealed weapons class, buy yourself a gun, maybe take a private investigator class. This will enable you to become more confident, and not get scared of him. This will empower you with an understanding of the law. You should educate yourself by taking a self-defense class. These classes are easy. They are fun. People laugh like crazy in the training. Do it! You will change your perspective. All of us on POF cannot give you this experience . We can give you advice all day long, but that will never be an exchange of attitude the classes can provide. Check the yellow pages. Check for an indoor shooting range. They people there are nice, and they always treat women VERY WELL. You can ask them about the nearest school.

I carry pepper spray and you can count on me having my gun with me on a date, especially if it's a date with someone I have met over the internet. Safety is first and foremost and with internet dating, as with most dating of strangers, one never really knows. He could be a serial rapist posing as mr. celibate (there's very little accountability in internet dating). I do take every precaution to be safe.

^^^you don't know one person that doesn't own one gun? Where do you live?
Out of thousands of people I know, less than half own guns and most of them are not registered. The people that don't own guns don't even want them in their house.
I don't like guns but I own one for hunting, I keep it at a friends house. I have a huge black german shepard for my protection. She works better than any gun.

vinny1234...I own a huge red Doberman for my alarm system, but a Smith & Wesson handgun and a 12 gauge shotgun for my protection.

Dogs are easily poisoned, which is what has happened to a few protection dogs that I personally knew.
