what happened to the old fashioned "slap in the face" or the infamous " drink in the face"
If you're downin' your rum & coke at work, you've got bigger problems!
so, ed, grabbing your crotch and drooling is not a prelude to sexual harassment, it is sexual harassment
I know it offends me! | |

Sexual harrassment ? Flirting ? ..... tired legs ? all the above??
are you offended by it? then its harassment. are you thrilled by it? then its flirting. am i rubbing my legs/feet? then its tired legs.
harassment isnt entirely based on the potential harasser's actions, but more on the potential harassee's interpretation of the actions. imo

| When is it sexual harassment ???? Posted: 5/3/2008 10:25:06 AM | | In the workplace: sexual harassment can be anything at all! You can get a guy fired even if he did nothing wrong at all. Why? How?? Because companies are terrified of being severely fined by the labour board and maybe more so, they don't want the woman to go off work claiming the company didn't protect her = millions of dollars to the woman. Goodbye job. | |

Posted: 5/3/2008 5:37:38 PM | I disagree,,, I put up a tread not so long ago re sexual harrassment , and driven,,, Let me tell y0u it was not a comfortable situation, I sat for couple days what to do,,, and after making my self sick worrying ,,, for what,,, this guy needed a wake up call and ,that is what happened,,, I spoke to my employer laid the cards on table and let the chips fall, he was called in, and after that we were both called in ,,, I vented he listened and after I said my piece he realized he was no longer working in warehouse with a bunch of guys , and office jabber is not what it used to be,,, When you make it so uncomfortable for co-workers not to want to come in to work,,,,,,,THERE IS A PROBLEM!

Because companies are terrified of being severely fined by the labour board and maybe more so, they don't want the woman to go off work claiming the company didn't protect her = millions of dollars to the woman. Goodbye job. The company’s decision will be based on what ever the cheapest solution is in the long run… they don’t really care who’s right or wrong.
This is Canada not the US… the only cases that get awarded a million dollars are class action law suits. Even a wrong full death case wouldn’t result in that much money for an individual. The standard payout granted by courts is 2 years salary severance package, and if their lucky, maybe their legal fees.
It’s usually cheaper to get rid of one, or both employees and then deal with a wrong full dismissal suit if anyone cares to pursue it.

| When is it sexual harassment ???? Posted: 5/3/2008 11:43:33 PM | See what's become of the world now! I guess my daddy was right they should have a chain on their ankle that only lets 'em get from the bedroom to the kitchen. Never shoulda let 'em vote.
So now when i'm with some woman and she laughs at some corny joke and touches my arm or grabs my hand while we're walking i'm being sexually harrassed!!!! This really is one screwed up world you got going.

| When is it sexual harassment ???? Posted: 5/4/2008 10:31:25 PM | I think flyin-high hit this bang-on.
HR is never your friend, as much as they pretend to be. Companies only care about their bottom line. Some people who work there might give a damn about what's right, but someone has to employ them.
"Corporate Confidential" and "Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office" are good reads, though idealists may not like some of the messages. It tells you how things are and how you should deal with them, not how things should be.
In response to the original question, I think "harassment" is the key word here. Occasionally nice people will say the wrong thing (or an unexpected thing), or bad people just have no sense whatsoever. If the incident is relatively minor, a stern word with the offender will clue them into stopping their behaviour. If it doesn't, then you know you have harassment. If the comment or action is without doubt offensive or threatening, then you also have harassment.
In either case, always document something like this, send copies to a couple friends.

| When is it sexual harassment ???? Posted: 5/8/2008 4:02:20 PM | linen, where I live, you are not, as the accused, allowed to know anything about the accusation or even who accused you! So needless to say, sitting across from him/her isn't going to happen where I live in Ontario Canada working for a non-unionized employer.
Trust me, I know. I was fired for harassment(wrongfully) and I can attest to the monstrous injustice of the system.

That like everything else in this affirmative action world probably only is if you are a male. I'm sure a woman would be told exactly who and what as well as how to get back at them. They can't get by in real life without the government giving them special privelidges because they are basically not good at anything that is outside the realm of house work. They aren't even good at that anymore as they have been trained to hate themselves and their traditional role by their own saviour the feminist. They don't even have maternal instinct anymore. The weaker sex? Yah mentally weaker. As long as they can have things go only their way they are happy even when they know their way is the wrong way. It's like the one teacher taught the girls in her class "it's payback time for all men". We're guilty before birth, and they call us insensitive and judgemental.

| When is it sexual harassment ???? Posted: 6/30/2008 11:06:57 PM | (I -think- I can avoid being tasered by the moderator if I attribute the source, Scott Adams) Having too much time on my hands last week, I was going through last year's Dilbert page-a-day calender before throwing it out. This one I kept, thought it was good. At the conference table, Wally says "I'm about halfway finished with the online study class on sexual harassment" The boss says "Wally, we don't have an online study on sexual harassment" And Wally, "That would explain why all the actors seemed so happy" | |
