| Confused about religion Posted: 8/28/2009 10:19:14 AM | There's a psychologicial thing that you remember the good things about people who you relate to and the bad things about people who you are different from. Also people who are really into a belief tend to come across as**** because they consider their belief to be more important than common curtousy. See all the people at the town hall meetings protesting health care reform. I'm catholic and alot of my friends are suprised/don't assume I'm religous simply because I don't bring it up all the time, and I don't dogmatically follow the doctrine. For about the first year after one of my friends became an athiest there was no doubt in anyone's mind because he walked around school picking fights with less intelligent kids so he could beat up on their religious views. Being a prick has nothing to do with being religious or not, just the flavor of the unpleasantness
Saying religious people are usually homophobic, rascist, or believe everone outside their religion is going straight to hell is about as like saying athiest usually are hedonistic, filthy, un-american, communists. Its ignorant and inaccurate.

| Confused about religion Posted: 8/28/2009 2:58:55 PM | | You've got the totally correct attitude Kerplonk. It's not about what you believe in life after death, it's about how you treat others while you're here. | |

| Confused about religion Posted: 8/28/2009 5:49:14 PM | I am one to believe the validity of an argument can in principle be accepted or rejected decisively on evidence . Some seem to follow unsubstantial notions that "faith" is blind, such is far from the truth, for faith to encapsulate and/or define truth, it must be based upon evidence.
The Dead Sea Scrolls, The Bible, and other historical artifacts have a pervasive influence, but are deemed insufficient "evidence" by the majority.
But while working as a Nurse for some 15 years, I lost count of how many professed Atheist lost their adamant position, and in the waning hours before death, sought solace in a Benevolent God.
Which brings me to the conclusion, that maybe "conscience" tends to induce compelling evidence when some have time to think of nothing else.
Interesting topic.

| Confused about religion Posted: 8/28/2009 10:51:20 PM | Religion is an orginization of people. Spirituallity is something that a person holds within. People who are religoius have others to hide behind and compare their behavior to.
The origin of this post questioned the behavior of a significant other. That person was using "religion" as an excuse for behavior. If she was a spiritual person she would have had no excuse, only reasons for her ways. She could have said "I want to see others because that is the way I feel inside" the poster of this thread called her out and she went with God told me to see other People, the church says and so forth.
I feel for the poster but, find someone who is at one with the universe or knows themselves or something similiar. People who let religion guide them can take no responsiblility for ther own thoughts and are lost. Find someone who has found them selves. Make sure you have found yourself as well. Good luck.

| Confused about religion Posted: 9/6/2009 10:22:58 AM | | Well, we are brought up to believe that the religious peeps are somehow 'safer', bc they have morals and ethics. However, religion is a convenient banner to wave for anyone wishing to not be accountable, or somehow feel superior. History is rife w/ examples of wars caused bc 'my God is better than your God". We have witnessed by now many of the scandals of clergy who used their position of trust to conduct financial fraud or sex abuse of minors. From that we can or should conclude that just because someone claims membership in a group with certain beliefs, they are in no way exempt from scrutiny. Unfortunately, religion is a good place for the wolvess to hide out and gain access to more victims, especially since many of those victims want someone they can trust and be led by, and give their trust freely. Also, many religions preach obedience to the creed and or leader who is 'appointed by God' and discourage questioning the status quo-ie not listening to the inner voice . Hopefully, people who highly value their faith and their community are learning to be more vigilant in outing those wolves and setting a good example in their own walk. Hopefully, more and more, religions are teaching people to think for themselves and honestly evaluate in their own heart whether or not something feels 'right', or follows their own scriptures. Just like the world itself, wherever there is day, there is also night. There will always be people who do 'bad' things to each other, as well as good people who do 'good' things. If we believe the religious crowd is a safer bet and a utopian island of sorts of all love and goodness, we are disillusioned, and are refusing to see with eyes wide open. Religion is not the insurance policy we hoped it was! It's our responsibility to follow our own instincts. | |

| Confused about religion Posted: 9/6/2009 10:52:57 AM | | WELL i have allways thought that all structured religions were set up to control people[IE} if you do this or dont do that you will burn in hell. I believe[ THIS MIGHT SEEM OLDFASHION] but so am i. 1 rule is all that is needed [DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE DONE UNTO YOU.] that seems resonable to me. -----WINCHESTER | |

| Confused about religion Posted: 9/6/2009 11:38:57 AM | | OP, religion in general is a cop out, a way for you to do bad things and have someone to support you WHILE you do it. Something to blame, something to fall back on, a reason for your actions. As a man, a human being, and a member of the community, I make good decisions every day, I volunteer to help our great communities, and I am notorious for helping those who can help themselves, but need a nudge in the right direction. If you look up the stages of addiction, one of the final stages is actually finding religion, because you are hopeless, and you are then in a very impressionable place, and you find yourself a zealot, who says they can help you, and you listen and now have another addiction to face, religion itself. Not all religious people are inherently bad, however, I'd say over half of them, are complete hypocrites. Because to them, since I do everything good in my life, but do not praise a diety, I'm going to hell, but they can screw their life away, and because they pray, they will be accepted into heaven. Think about the nonsense that makes. | |

| Confused about religion Posted: 9/13/2009 7:53:11 PM | Verzen...in general, people love religion because it gives them an excuse to do whatever the hell they want and then go to church on Sunday and confess. It is nothing but an easy cop-out and that is why now I am an agnostic. Religions are a farce and only do what the governments do and that is fleece the public for their 10 Percent so they can keep on giving you Guilt Trips...my advice....go find an Atheist! | |
