Well I dont know about a waste of resources but the consumerism is a damper on the christmas spirit. I havnt felt the christmas spirit since I was stationed in Germany. The kriskringlemarket in Numburg was awesome. People make crafts during the year and sell them, all sorts of creative things. Musicians always playing in the streets. The decorations are traditional. Gluevine (a spice wine) and roasted chesnuts are sold from pedlers. It was really fantastic.

Remembering the old days with memories, that the malls & advertising would actually start in December. It now starts in Sept and by the time Dec comes around, we're all Buh Humbug and all cranky.

Christmas isn't about going into debt with the latest tech gadget, how many gifts you can't afford or how stressed this time of year people feel. Its about enjoying the time, being around family & friends, celebrating with food, singing christmas carol's and celebrating the birth of christ. I like to think we're going to go back to that and remember how fun christmas can be, without feeling burden & stressed.

I have to agree with a previous post- one week out of the year that brings smiles to childrens faces, some familys together, or a drive around town to see the lights with the wife... a waste in your opinon maybe : mine- I think its worth it. Everbodys worried about being PC(look at those who want to ban ho ho ho due to a negative conatation attached to it- get real) or enviormentaly friendly(yet how many of those types use all biodegradable stuff- practice what you preach), or are Jewish, musilm, ect. ect. who do not belive in it. Note to self you dont have to spend thousands on super toys or gadgets- what was that silly expression - its the though that counts.

lol at pisces, i was wondering if anybody else noticed that.

Myself, one little thing that I have chosen to not partake in is the giving of cards. I see them as extremely wasteful, and very corny at the same time. Sure, I have seen some that made me laugh. And I have read some that are very heart-felt, but I value those words more if the giver spoke them personally.

yeah, but we're all guilty of it in some way or another. if you do you bit during the year then christmas won't seem like such a waste! You can't change other peoples lifestyles only your own so you can go on about it all you like, but what are YOU doing? are YOU practicing what your preaching? Small steps add up to a big deal if everybody does them!

all this stuff about buying gifts is just stupid...christmas is about taking a break and having fun most of all, its not about spending your last penny and running around shopping malls...

I do more than most. I feel I'm one of the very small percentage that doesn't just talk.

are YOU practicing what your preaching?
Yes ma'am.

People spend too much money christmas shopping, and miss the real meaning behind christmas.. It's not about buying everyone presents, and spending money till you do not have any left..

Also some people are nice just during Christmas, and the rest of the year mean spirited people..

I get annoyed with people that ask me if I've done all of my christmas shopping. They have lost insight into the real meaning about Christmas, which is about Jesus and what he has done for the world, and also about spending time with friends and family, and learning to treat people better, not just during Christmas..

Americans are basically squanderers of resources... you name it, we squander it.
There seems to be a "we'll make more" mentality, because that's generally what we do.
Guess what, we can't make more clean air or more clean water and the planet can only take so much abuse.
We're doomed! On that note, I think I'll go to bed and dream about sunshine and light, clean air and clean water and renewable energy sources. Surely, tomorrow this will all seem less dire?!?!

Yeah, but you try telling your kids they're only having 1 present this year 'cause "we're saving the planet"...bound to go down like a lead balloon! They want what their friends have and by not giving it your outcasting them from their peers. I'm not saying spend a fortune or don't help the planet..but why not do both? Swop a present for a donation. Only spend what u've got and no more...ditch the credit cards and don't set yourself up for as fall, there ARE other ways of making a perfect christmas on a budget. Ask your kids to donate one of their wrap up's to a christmas charity. Why does it have to be an "all or nothing" thing? No good preaching the meaning of Christmas to people because most are not even religous and they still celebrate...i'm agnostic...i celebrate! It's a tradition to me that has it's roots in religion but is no longer about religion...it's not JUST a religous festival, it's a tradition too!

Funny.......but neither one of my children would love me, anyone else in our family, or friends any more or less, whether they got a new MP3 player or just a card telling them how we love them. Teaching your children about priorities in life, and to think for themselves instead of bowing to their peers wishes takes presidence over material possessions in my books.

^^^Oh right...is that why you bought them all christmas presents is it? I presume you did by the phrase "would not" love me less, as apposed to "don't" love me any less! Try practicing what you preach! Why make life harder for your kids than it already is? It doesn't hurt them to recieve gifts as long as it's done in the proper manner. It does hurt them to be outcasted because they only recieved a pair of socks and a Primark jumper!...i know, i was one of those kids when i was little...and whilst it made me appreciative, it wasn't much fun when all the other kids called us "tramps" and "poor"...even though, in hindsight, they were EQUALLY as disadvantaged but their parents were the ones who got in dept with loans and credit cards! "Love" doesn't come into it, i doubt that all the parents who buy their kids presents are trying to substitute for anything or buy their love...it is a pleasure to give and recieve and why should we let anyone take that away from us?!

Climb down off that high horse of yours!
Let me tell you a little story, and maybe you'll learn something.
My younger brother a number of years ago, asked our mother not to buy anything for his children without he and his wife's approval first, as he did not want his children to love her because of what she could buy for them. During a visit with my ex wife and our children, his were at our mothers, I asked him where he got that hair brained idea from!
He said to me, " Because the only reason I remember Papa was that each time we went to visit he would slip a $5 bill into my hand, and I don't want my kids having that same memory of our Mom."
That night at the dinner table after eating I looked over at my then, 7 yr old son, and 4 yr old daughter, and asked them, " Do you love Nana June because of the things she buys for you?" My son replied, " No Dad that's silly"
I asked, "Why is that silly?"
His reply, along with his sister's was, " I love Nana June because she takes me for walks to the park to play, and she plays cards with me..." They both mentioned more reasons, but I think you get the idea.
They have never in their lives lacked for a roof over their head, or warm cloths and good food in their tummies. They have not lacked huge amounts of love from both of their parents, family and friends! They have never bowed to the pressure of their peers, and whinned about not having the lastest Play Station gaming console or having the latest fashion in clothing. It's because they have been raised to look beyond themselves. They have always had wonderful friends that look up to them and respect them. They are not sheep, and never will be. I'm more proud I am of them then I can truly express here, and I am totally offended by your attack of my character and that of my children. Shame on you!

Edit: I just looked at your profile and you are a student taking, health and Psychology. Unbelievable!

I'm sorry but what has that got to do with the original question? Are you seriously suggesting that by buying our children presents we are BUYING their love? Is it not possible to love your children, play with them, stimulate them AND give them gifts at Christmas? Are you denying that not having the same as your friends is tough and alienates you from your peers? Is it wrong to do those things IF you can afford to do so? I am not questioning yours or your childrens integrity i am merely saying that i KNOW me buying for my children is not in any way a substitute, and i KNOW about going without too because i did as a kid. I "LEARNED" from my childhood, you cannot teach me anything with your example. I grew up in a world where i had NO family to do those things, i had a mum and a dad and my siblings. I count myself fortunate it's not like that for my children, why would i deliberately put them through that just to teach them a lesson when i camn teach them in other ways?...theres more than one way to skin a cat!...my kids are VERY appreciative and considerate and generous...and most of all LOVED!

Christmas does seem to waste a lot or resources and for what? Reference Charlie brown and the true meaning of christmas. Retailers need this time of year to balance their ledgers. Look at all those brightly colored homes. the things christmas gives us, all the families come together, gas in cars, fuel in planes more wasted resources. The best way to reduce the waste would be change religions. Take Chanukah, for example, there are no 12 days of christmas but there are 8 days of Chanukah. More time to run around or perhaps walk around,Gifts go only to the children and they don't have to be big, you don't have to buy for the adults. Candles not light-bulbs and only indoors and only 44 candles total and they could be replaced by leds

Carry on with your rant if you wish. I think we only differ in our opinion in the fact that you say this
<div class="quote">Are you denying that not having the same as your friends is tough and alienates you from your peers?I never said that growing up isn't tough! I said that bowing to your peers because you or your children somehow lack the material possessions they covet is wrong.
That's the commercialism the OP is talking about in her opening post! And I most certainly didn't say you didn't love your children.
Now go hug your kids, and may you all have a Merry Christmas. Shessssssssh!

What I like most about Christmas is the attitude that people seem to have.
Wouldn't it be nice if it was all year round.
Once Black Friday(Day after Thanksgiving Sale) most people seem to be in a more Love the World attitude....

Notice I said after Black Friday, cause dang that Friday sale can sometimes bring out the worst in some people

Well,

What I like most about Christmas is the attitude that people seem to have.

Amen,

I remember spending Christmas with Grandma,.....back in the woods, in her Log cabin,
miles from nowhere,......

and on Christmas,..I was given a basket of Nuts,...Oranges,...and socks.

What more could a boy ask for ?

These things were "Special",....these were "Store Bought" Nuts and Oranges,....
something that we never got any other time of year,..so yaeh,..it was Special.

Christmas time, is supposed to be "Special",..a time when you are more concerned about "Giving",...and spreading your love, to those that matter the most.

Now a days, it really has become so comercial, and is more about what you recieve,
than what you give (in most cases)

Lets face it,...Christmas is all about the "Kids",..and now, they are sooooo spoiled !

Imagine giving a kid "Nuts and Socks" for Christmas,..the kids would ask Sant for new Parents,...LOL
