| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 2:27:02 AM | Cats are probably the most abused animals i have ever seen and i have seen many. Cats are abandoned, burnt, runover, caught in leghold traps, trapped in fan belts and on and on. They are considered disposable because they are thought to be independant, aloof, unfeeling and disloyal. Cats are definately independent but its there nature. They probably dont feel any more of less for their people than a dog. However can u blame them with all of the abuse they suffer at the hands of people that believe a cat can fend for itself. How often i have heard someone say...lets just dump the cat at the local farm cuz they can survive on mice and they can fend for themselves. Dont make that mistake....they need us as much to survive as a dog. We have made them that way. I have four cats and a dog and I get as much from my old tabby as i do from my dog. Treat them all with respect, they rely on us. | |

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 5:56:55 AM | having just had the sad task of putting our pet cat to sleep I would say cats . I have never had the chance to have a dog (thinking about getting one next month! weee!) but every cat I've had was an amazing pet/friend. My cat acted more like a dog anyway - very loyal, followed me around ,came when I called her name , waited for me at the door etc. Rare find for sure. Was riding the bus home from work yesterday morning and some guy brought the fugliest little pug on the bus, he was so ugly he was cute. His tongue was just flopping and he had a weird head tilt thing goin on but those eyes! I know where the term "puppy dog eyes" comes from now! | |

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 6:14:44 AM | Good post Metroman.Alot of those anti cat attitudes come from the days when people believed them to be witch's familiars. In 13th century England the superstitions against cats caused many of them to be killed and the rise of other sill beliefs like they supposedly suck breath out of babies. This belief led to a mass slaughter of cats which in turn led to a rat population explosion which caused the spread of Black Plague.
Some stupid superstitons never die.

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 6:31:27 AM | dogs have quite the life..they just see how great you are and want to include you in their life as much as they can.
they still find things to do..
they find trees to sniff.. other dog's bottoms to check out cupboard doors to open food to steal cats to chase other dogs to bark at pretending they have just had some crazy drugs randomly and go running a;; over the place around the house like they're insane making cool howling/whining sounds when the phone is ringing pretending they can't hear you when you call them to get off someone's bed plus they are there for you. they are responsive. they are expressive of their love and affection. they are quite the coolest pets...
though i think ferrets are also cool..heard they clean things...so now i don't need to hire a maid...just get the ferret to tidy my room

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 6:53:18 AM | i'm most definately a Cat person and i love em so much, that i'v got 3 of em!!

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 8:41:14 AM | Metro, What a wonderful post!!! Very true. I have 3 cats that are very much my babies. They all have their very own unique personalities. Lots of heart. I can't help but laugh at them...they make me smile....ALOT.
I am a sucker for animals....can't tell you how many strays I have picked up over the years. So for me it depends on my lifestyle as to what I prefer. I think if I had tons of room I would have both.
Has anyone ever had a pet that just "disappeared" only to return months later???
Have had 2 in my lifetime....both cats

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 9:07:50 AM | I have both but have had cats most of my adult life. I have a border collie that is 1 1/2 yrs old and he is my shadow. I love that creature so much. He's the sweetest. My cats are great too, but not as attentive. | |

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 9:39:20 AM | “Cat person, they are potty trained from birth,” Guess you have never had to deal with litter box training a kitten, because the above statement is completely false. “and are a lot more affection.” Again, completely false. “Plus the size makes it easier for them to jump on your lap” Tell that to one of those people who own one of those rat dogs. “I have 2 dogs , I had cats but the dogs ate them after the cats ate the chickens” Unfortunately, my dog loves the kid’s cat, so I can’t get him to eat it. “Cats take no sh**.” They just leave it where ever they please. Don’t you just love finding it while gardening? “plus i dont have to pick up their poop. as they do it in other ppls gardens!! Lol” People like you truly suck! If I knew which cat was leaving it in mine, I would return it to the owner, in my own special way hehehe “and they are independent, smart,” So why does it not learn to quit falling head first into things? “and will make you earn thier trust.” TRUST A CAT??? Surely you jest. They scratch and claw their owners, while my dog has never so much as nipped anyone unless instructed to. “a chiuauha? i love those!!” I don’t even classify them as dogs. HATE rat dogs with every fiber of my being, even worse than cats. Completely useless, spoiled rotten 99% of the time, and usually owned by obnoxious idiots who think they should be allowed to go everywhere they do. A friend who has one of those shaggy little rats wants to move in. She gets rid of the rat, or she can forget it. I WILL NOT protect it from my real dog, who would love to eat it. He once caught a real Norwegian rat when he was a pup, and sees those little dogs as more of the same. “still love my St Bernards..” Now those are real dogs. “Cats have never been totally tamed. They still hunt. Cats are low-maintenance also.” If they are such low maintenance, why do I have to keep patching the fool back together after his hunts with things a bit bigger than he could chew? (LOTS of raccoons here) Stupid hair ball has cost a lot more in vet bills than the dog. And at least I don’t have to come home to a house that smells completely putrid like a litter box. Those who say they don’t smell have obviously just become used to it, like a smoker gets used to the smell of smoke. “Cats are probably the most abused animals i have ever seen and i have seen many.” I have seen the opposite, and have even had to rescue one puppy that some idiot was drawing down sites on. Grabbed the poor thing and ran before the creep could shoot him. “My cat acted more like a dog anyway –“ LOL That was the only reason the cat we have has lasted as long as it has around here. If it acted any more like a cat, it would be outta here fast. “Rare find for sure.” Very rare, but the only type worth bothering with. “but I do like cats...especially with soy sauce...they taste like chicken!” My brother told me that. He is the big white hunter, and refers to them as the other white meat. I say turn them all into guitar strings when this one ticks me off. “beliefs like they supposedly suck breath out of babies.” Uh, this is true. They smell the milk on the babies breath and try to suck/lick it off, sucking the air out of the baby. They also crawl into cribs and bassinets and accidentally smother infants. Most docs have very serious warnings for new parents with cats. This is not a superstition, it is a real danger to very young children. Gave one cat a flying lesson when I found it in my friend's bassinette with the baby. | |

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 9:43:33 AM | I hate cats, but I have one.....her name is Yoda. When she was born, she was still in that little sack thing and not breathing, the momma cat left her alone. That little warm towel thing, I will stand by it, cause it works, cut her out of the the sack and put her in a warm towel, and just rubbed. Her little head poked out of that towel, adn I swear, remember the first time you saw Yoda on Star Wars? Identical, hence her name, Yoda.
I hate cats, but this one's with me for life. I've a big fan of the black labrador.....

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 9:44:32 AM | Wow, I wonder how my son survived infancy with my cats around! They *loved* him so much at that age. When I first brought him home, my littlest girl ran up to him and sniffed all over him and purred. My other cat would run to him very worried if he was crying. A lot of cats can be not nice, but I've never met one like that. | |

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 9:57:36 AM | I can't say right now... they are both looking over my shoulder. | |
|
| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 10:03:12 AM | | He probably survived because you kept a close eye on things. Some parents are just plain idiots. But being affectionate is part of the cause of them crawling in and accidentally smothering the baby. | |

Typical ignorance left over from the superstition days. No, no, no.Look at the scientific facts.Cats do NOT smother babies!!!!Thats another myth left over from the dark ages. What happened is that the baby probably died from SIDS, the cat happened to be there at the wrong time and got blamed.Cats are drawn to cribs for various reasons, usually has to do with scent.
Some myths just won't die.

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 11:47:06 AM | Dogs - absolutely! Big or small, purebred or mutt, it doesn't matter.
Not fussy on cats though - the ones I've had dealings with in the past always seem so sneaky...............

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 11:55:45 AM | I am a dog person. I like the unconditional love. I like my girls especially because they have that independent streak that everyone likes in cats. Arden place fetch with herself and will snub me on occasion. Plus she doesn't smell like a cat, need a litter box in the house (yuk) and makes me get my rearend outside.
I prefer other people's cats. I can visit for a bit then go home and leave them the box duty (pun intended)

Ah, but you've never met mine , they'll cuddle right up to anyone. Well, except Beau, he's a little scared of people... but he was never like that until his 'big brother/best friend' died a couple years ago, the look on his face when he saw Spike dead, omg, he was devestated, hid under the dining room table for days. But if you take a little time he'll warm right up to you.

True about the scent and just basic curiousity. But I'm not sold on infant deaths strictly as SID when there is a cat involved in the crib. How many people have cats that sleep on or near their heads? When I was little my mom had a persian that was always laying on my pillow or trying to lay on my face. I'd wake up at night unable to breath because she would be laying on my face. It would take a lot less than the weight of a cat to smother an infant.
Infants and young children shouldn't be left unattended with animals around anyway. Thats how dog bite injures occur with little kids. Lack of attention on the parents' part. I don't want to have to euthanize another dog at work because of a careless parent.
But that is another thread.

Ah, but you've never met mine
true, true - lol
My mother is afraid of cats, and my sister is allergic, so I didn't have much exposure to them while growing up. We always had a dog in the house, though.
My aunt had a cat that would, without warning, run straight up your leg right up to your head and then take a flying leap off (I kid you not) - scared the bejeebers out of me more than once.
A cousin of mine had a cat that was the devil incarnate. You never even knew the damn thing was in the house, and then all of a sudden he's attacking your feet like a maniac. (not a good thing when you don't have shoes on!) Turns out the poor thing had a brain tumor. I know I could get bashed for being a cat hater, but I wasn't exactly crying when he had to be put down - I've still got scars on my toes!

| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 12:43:14 PM | I don't like cats and dogs.I'm kind of allergic to both of them.I think rabbits are cute though. | |
|
| Cat or Dog person Posted: 5/29/2006 7:48:29 PM | Dogs all the way...cats are cute, but kind of a useless pet if....say....you're kid falls in the river. The cat's not going to dive in and grab him/her.
Honestly, I like pretty much all animals, just allergic to a lot of them. Dogs I can handle, cats get me sniffly. If I have a girlfriend with a cat though, I'll suck it up and take a double-dose of Claritin.
