I just posted that I was going to get a dog next week , well I inherited a cat last night.
A friend of mine called me , one of her friends had to move and dropped him off at her place. She called me about it , I went down to see him and fell in love!
his name is Spitz and he's awesome!

Happee, I'm glad to hear that you've gotten another cat. When you have a dog you are TIED down by it. If I'm gone for more than several hours.....and there's gonna be either a puddle, a pile or both on the floor. That's the type of committment you make when you get a dog. Cats are independent enough to handle being alone for long periods.

A lot of people 'have' a dog that they tie up outside and forget about, aside from feeding once a day. I think that's cruel - to just leave a dog all alone all day every day, on a chain. How would they like to be in that situation?.. (possible new thread here?)

All my life i have been a dog person. Never owned a cat before. Then one day i had the opportunity of having a cat. Thought at the very least, since i had 10 acres of land. The cat could keep mice away. I've now had the cat for 7-8 yrs. He never ever did do the chasing mice thing, but hes been a pal and a hoot all the same. I think when you find a cool cat......then its all good. They're just few and far between.

I like dogs but wouldn't have one, they smell and need to have a lot of baths and the worst, from my point of view, is having to take them for walks no matter what the weathers like.
Where as a cat will take itself - all you gotta do is open the door for it.
Unfortuantely though, my cat has been housebound for 2 months having been hit by a car and left. He's made a good recovery (unlikely to ever be the way he was before cos he had a fractured pelvis) and is now either constantly at the door wanting to go out (which he still can't do yet til the vet says so), making escape attempts everytime we come or go from the house, or sat on the windowledge eyeing up the drop to the ground (one floor up). He's bored silly stuck indoors and I feel so sorry for him, but he won't play with conventional toys (prefers to pull up my rugs, attack my feet while I'm in bed and chase shadows) so I'm stuck for ideas to entertain him...

Any suggestions??

I like cats too, but as a straight male...I am a dog person, not a "toy breed" person...as they are not true dogs but just cats trying to act like them. My dogs dont play with those cute little rubber sqeekie toys as they would just swallow them...they are manly dogs who destroy manly toys.

ok...lol...went too far there, but yeah, I like both, prefer dogs, bigger dogs are my thing, mastiff/molosser breeds...but I love bully breeds too, I have 2 pitbulls now (smallest dogs I have had) but easily some of the most affectionate.

that is a problem, its neglect. Personally my ex left and I have the dogs...I am tied down alot due to this...I wont leave them for long...even though they WILL hold it...dont matter, they need their walks, their food on time, and their regular routine...but no big deal, I need to go somewhere...hell they love the car, camping? they love that too. I work and they are home alone...that sucks but they have never been tied up outside...if they are out...so am I, they got free roam of my place

"Cats do NOT smother babies!!!!"
I am sorry if this sounds argumentative, but it does still happen. I will agree that perhaps cats were blamed for SIDS deaths as well until it was discovered, but SIDS was not the only cause. This is NOT a superstition.

Definately a dog person.

I have a love-hate relationship with cats. They're great provided they don't puke, eat my plants and stop scratching furniture (I use to have a great leather couch/love seat:S)

As for cats smothering babies, I've never heard of a documented case, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were to happen. If I remember correctly the myth was that they steal a child's soul while they're sleeping, originating during the witchhunt craze. (a witch's familiar) Must have been karma, millions of cats killed and then the plague starts (caused by the fleas carried by rats).

I'm more of a dog person. the bigger the dog the better, I do like some small dogs, but I'm picky as I can't stand their yaps.

I've been bitten by many dogs & still love them. Had 7 stitches in my ear from my aunts border collie Fred (farm dog), I was 5yrs old. One of the 200p Rotties I was working with, tried to jump up to give a hug (Rottie hugs are the best) & I tripped & he fell onto my chest & cracked my ribs (I heard a crunch).. I could hardly breath, the pain was horrible, & with him being a guard dog, he stood over top of me, & not even his owner could get near me.

My old dog was the best, miss him everyday. I have his things all over my apt. I'm currently living with a Pit Bull. Hes a great fella.. When I first moved in, I wass alone & didn't know the city & had no firends or family for 500km. He would come into my apt & keep me company while I played on the computer. Now that I have Shawn(b/f), Cyrus(dog) is around more. Shawn & Cyrus love each other & its hard trying to kick Cyrus out of my place now lol Everynight the 3 of us go for a walk.. Its always a nice walk as everyone is scared of Cyrus, so they turn around & take off.. stupid people, Cyrus is a chicken $hit lol I had Cyrus at the station near my place lastnight (poor fella has to wear a muzzle due to the horrid laws) & nobody would come near us.. ok except for this crazy lady that creeped me out & a bus driver who has 2 at home & just wanted to look at him

I was walking thru the common a few years ago with my landlords daughter. We saw a BIG! guy coming up the sidewalk the other way with two BIG! rotties (love rotties worked for a breeder at one point) both with huge leather collars with those big pointed studs in them. Obviously the owner wanted them to look tough and scary. I told the kid I was with to watch and wait behind me and let the guy come up to us. I started talking to the dogs and giving them scratches on their chests and ears. OMG it was so funny. One dog started wiggling like a puppy trying to lick my face while the other one threw himself on his back for a belly rub. The guy was so pi$$ed. What a riot. You want a tough dog, min pin, chihuahua or a small terrier. Big dogs just look scary. Sweetest lap dogs you can find.

Horse hockey.Show me one documented case where it has happened and it has been scientifically proven that the death was caused by a cat.Did they find cat hairs down the infant's throat?Gimmie a break, I suppose you think they're witch's familiars too.

Check this out.Look under facts and fallacies.According to this one there has been ONE verified case.Don't know the details.

I'm a dog person. I guess that's just because I grew up with a dog. Not that I hat cats or anything. They're OK but I prefer dogs.

I'm definitely a cat person, who has just recently been press ganged into owning a Siberian Husky.
I guess you might say he was a strange kind of 'birthday present' (loooong story...)
Aside from 3 cats, I also have several small critters, such as a bunny, hedgehog & ferret, 2 parakeets and a duck, who is sitting on my lap as I type.
Cats useless?
Hardly.
I haven't needed an alarm clock in 7 years....

I dont have a favorite, like them both....Iv had German Shepherd's and cat's ...cat's are easier if your gone for a few day's they can pretty much take care of themselve's,dont have to take them out every 6 hour's and are quite, and are just an all around good pet........dog's are entertaining more compassionate, and seem to sense your feeling's more then a cat and of course good protection....so they both have their good point's

I am a dog person. I like the unconditional love

I suppose there could be some truth to this rather simplistic anthropomorphism of an animal.Dogs are perceived this way because they are pack animals with a hierarchy. They do NOT relate to you as a person as you relate to them as small humans (children). They rather see you as the alpha male of the pack and as such, they react to you accordingly. The dog lying on it's back in supplication is saying,"I acknowledge your superiority". Cats OTOH, live in a very different social structure and hence the reason for the different perception.Cats are seen as independent and aloof. If you yell at a cat and scare it,the cat turns it's back and appears to be acting coy and aloof. This however is a misconception for the action is the same as the dog exposing it's belly, the cat is saying,"I acknowledge your superiority as the alpha male, please don't eat me".

"When mice, rats or bugs invade my home,I take it personal.I just don't want them dead,I want them to suffer a long time, die and then go to vermin hell." My sentiments exactly!! You cracked me up!!! LOL

I have two very large dogs and 2 cats. My dogs are very independent with a pet door and fenced yard ( 1/4 acre). The cats don't go outside.

Cats can be just as adoring as dogs, they just do it differently. Cats work for food, if you use treats you can teach a cat to do absolutely anything. I taught one of my cats to "sit", "down" and "heel". One of my more persistent girlfriends taught her cat to "say his prayers", "eat with his paws", plus all the dog obedience stuff. Then for good measure, she taught him how to "play dead", you point your finger at him and say "bang bang", the cat throws himself to the floor, rolls over and puts all 4 feet up in the air!! It's hysterical!!!

Cats. Not fussy on dogs at all. Slobbering destructive gits.

There's cats and then there's cats. Right now we've got a Maine Coon and some odd thing that's either part ocicat or part bengal. A very different animal from the regular Felis domesticus. He comes when called, talks back if you call his name (Loki, aptly named I'd point out) and is not built like regular cars. Stout neck, great huge paws and fairly large. Spots on the underside.

There's some impetus around here to get a serval.

Rasied a total cat person. Always thought dogs were vulgar, and needy. They stink and they eat their own poop. All that changed when my ex had a beautiful 120lb German Shepard. He was vicious to a fault (long story, he was a guard dog) but he grew to love me. Became my best friend. I would walk him every night, he couldn't be walked in the day because there were too many people around. He was fantastic with our family, her parents and my parents, but at the sight of anyone else, he would go beserk.

Loved his belly rubs, his daily walks, me chasing him. One day we realized he had cancer, and it spread quickly until he couldn't walk. Putting him down was absolutely the worst day of my life. I still miss him and think of him every day. The house just did not feel the same without him. I always knew if there was an intruder, just get the intruder to the garage somehow and that would have been the end of him.

We had him cremated after he was put down, I mean what do you do with a dog that size. We got his ashes in a nice oak box and she kept them to this day. About a week later, we received a sympathy card from the vet. When we opened it up, they had dipped his paw in ink and a pawprint was on the card. Oh my god it was so amazing we instantly were in tears. I mean there he was, his big fat paw right there for us to touch. I'm choking up a bit even typing this, that card was simply amazing.

We waited oh it was probably 3 years before we got another dog. Fought the urge to buy another one right away, since he could never be replaced. We knew the perfect dog would find us, and she did. Instead of having a big mean dog we couldn't take anywhere, we decided to get a dog we could take EVERYWHERE, namely a Puggle, we called her Maggie.

She is a great dog, and about 8 months later I bought another dog, a pug/shitzu to keep Maggie company so she wouldn't be alone in the daytime. His name is Mugsy and they are the best of friends. When our marriage broke down for the last time we had to decide on what to do with the dogs. I couldn't bear to split them since they stick to each other like glue. Even though Mugsy is mine, I left the two of them together. They aren't fixed and I'm hoping they have a litter. If they do, then my ex has agreed to give me one of the pups in exchange for mugsy.

That being said I sure miss my dogs, they would sleep with me every night, simply little angels.
