aww common D&D can be fun.. I've never actually played but I sat in on a group of people playing and it was halarious. I can't say that I'd be able to get into it, but it is much more interactive then a computer game!

Heh D&D more interactive than a 40 player assault raid in warcraft? not quite...

Yeah D&D is cool for chillin in person with friends and rolling up the 1d20, but games like warcraft really do take what D&D was meant to be to the next level. I grew up on pen and paper rpgs....but as far as immersion, they don't come close to professional mmo's.

Fun fact...World of Warcraft's creators all had degrees in psychology...no wonder there are 9 million people paying $15 a month to log in and play.

I loved D&D back in junior high, but it was a lot of work and planning. A lot can be said for typing in a password on your pc and having the same experience with no prep and having 150 guildmates ready to team up.

*feels young* Really the first time I heard anything about D&D was my last year in culinary school (nearly 6 years ago) .. I watched a group "attempting" to play it there. Of course I got extremly bored and left. Last year I watched a friends sister and her bf actually play the game and it was facinating to watch, but I do agree I'd much prefer to log in on a computer type in my pw and be on my way. I come on the computer to relax and get away from all my major thinking and caca, so playing D&D would only be the reverse and not very relaxing at all.

Sure, I do.

One of my brothers loves geeky girls too.

It's all in the attitude.

I guarantee you that nerds and geeks treat girls better then any other guy. Anywho, while I don't play WoW as much...I'm going to get back into it later, but play with moderation...I play Guild Wars and have 10 level 20 characters (level cap is 20). Now Guild Wars is a good MMO if you're looking for something free and less soul/life consuming.

After reading some of the posts here I have to re-think my idea that I am a geek. You guys win.

As for D&D, I really much prefer kicking back with friends (we DO usually use a PC generated dungeon) and drinks than getting online or on a computer in a hyper-competitive situation. Hell, I'm in front of the PC all day, the last thing I want to do when I get home is get in front of it again. Plus, I find the face-to-face games much more creative for the player and focus more on team-building and imagination than the online versions. In my opinion, the face-to-face games actually helped me and my friends in other social interactions.

When I owned my company my ex-wife used to say, "I married a geek, but at least I married their king." ... then she took half of my sh!t.

I throw my vote in for plain old D&D as well. It does depend on the abilities of the dungeon master though. The last game I was in had a great one, and we all had very unique characters.

Wow, a nice forum topic to come accrose. Hello all you fish, I must say. I am a HUGE Geek.. yep, I love fine arts, I love classical music, I enjoy opera and plays... I think in this age that would qualify you as a geek. Now I also am an Avid player os EverQuest, a massive MMORPG. I can talk all day about this game, I love it and it is my free time. I play Guitar Hero, and Mortal Kombat at my buds house. I dont own a PS2 or Xbox, so I dont waste money on consol games. Im total geek, and i love it. Im happy with myself, im 19, I am doing contract to deed on a small house in town and I will some day own. I have a 1990 honda CRX, and a 1977 Chevy Monte Carlo. Now the best part of this all is that guess where I work? No im not in the IT dept. Far from, I work for AutoZone! Yep, totaly different field, who the hell woulda known.

What im getting at is that being a geek or a nerd these days, I feel is like being diverse. Somone who is willing to be diverse. I can talk motor head all day, or i can go L33T and talk about my UBER Dark Elf Warrior! Wait lets look at a peice of music from the 18th century and study it, what does it mean? why did he compose it like this?

I love being a geek, because I am diverse. Thanks for your time, this was my penny on the topic. and for now ROCKHOLLA!

Just as challenging as finding a geeky guy that one is still compatable with. Like the previous gentleman said, its diversity. Not only do I enjoy computer games, but I love playing softball and basketball when ever possible. I'm even up for a game of football, and I don't mean the wussy touch football. I enjoy listening to instrumentals as well as opera, but I live in a very small town so going to a show is out. I don't even think we have a place for such things. Being a geek is great but it makes finding somebody that fits the mold with you all the more difficult.

You rock Nick from MN. I'd love to get my filthy hands on a 1990 crx. Right now I'm rollin around in my JDM b16a swapped 98 civic ex coupe. I have never tried eq but a friend mine was quite addicted. Incidentally his car is a JDM h22a swapped 95' civic coupe with 600 horsepower of forced induction. It's funny watching a geek in a civic blow the doors right off mustangs and 'vettes.

ouch that stings! I hear you on the face to face, role-playing, team building creativity thing. That was the great thing about old school d&d...it just made already defined social groups that much closer.

I don't stare at a computer all day tho, and while slaving at my restaurant, I look forward to coming home, mixing a drink, and indulging in a little solitary escapism. it feels like a pseudo mini vacation.

You know, you could have just said 'renaissance man'. That pretty much covers someone being diverse (for those that don't know what the term means, google is your friend). Or, more appropriately, and the term I prefer, 'Jack of all trades' (with it's true attendant meaning).

Which is maybe the point of geeks (supposedly) being chic. Being jack of all trades is an anomaly when compared to the rest of society. When one can deal with electronic equipment as readily as preparing a meal, then discuss the repercussions of the ramifications of homo-erotic themes in 12th century Italian art (it's a joke folks), people look at you with that deer in the headlights look as if to say, "Is there anything this guy (or girl) can't do or know?" Either that or, "What a weirdo!"

Either way, is it possible that because a group of people in society enjoy expanding their minds by continually learning new things, that they are regarded as ones to look up to by others who are discovering that there is more to life than Survivor?

Or, is all this a bunch of rubbish and we're just overthinking this (supposed) current trend?

we're just overthinking this
Maybe my definition of geek is old, but I thought overthinking was what we do best. :-p

Well, I'm a geek. And I don't subscribe to WoW. I'd rather ride my motorcycle. My geek interests lies more in Star Wars, conventions, sci-fi, RPGs, Fantasy and Ren Faires, and costuming (mostly for charity events). I am hoping to find someone interested in the same things if possible.....or at least tolerate my geek pursuits.

Well maybe slightly geek is cool, but now point-dexter type geek. Smart guys, a little goofy maybe is attractive, why? I haven't the slightest clue. Haha
