I like the script artists, hidenori shoji, nobuo uematsu, yuki ikuchi, etc most of them (especially nobuo) are/have been employed by squaresoft/sony to write soundtracks great big huge ones for computer games (final fantasy for instance) which have been amazing.

The japanese certianly have a flair and style that's rarely seen outside of the east thats for sure... and there was my dad saying to me when i was about 16 that the japanese had only just discovered elvis... they soon undiscovered him.

Hmm, I've listened to quite a bit of Japanese music over the last few years, (granted I lived in Japan for a year) but my favourite has to be the B'z, although I also listen to:

Flow
Orange Range
Kishidan
X-Japan
Ayu
Two Mix
See-Saw
L'arc
Yuzu
Beat Crusaders
and TM Revolution

I'm sure there are a few that I missed, but oh well.

I am a hardcore Japanese music fan. I have been into it for the longest time. My favorite Jrock artists are Dir en Grey, the GazettE, D'espairs Ray, LM.C, Mucc, Girugamesh, Hide, Hyde, Dio, Versailles, Ayabie, Alice Nine, Screw, 12012, Kiyoharu, Aile, Blood, Vidoll, and many more. Jpop stuff is Koda Kumi, Namie Amuro, Gackt, Kat-Tun, Hitomi Shimatani, News, Ayumi Hamasaki. I listen to it all day long.

For a woman that is raising a son who is a j-rock junkie I can appreciate he is good company.

He plans on going to Japan after he graduates college to become a music producer in Japan. I just hope he makes it BIG .

Some of the music is wonderful however there is some that have violated the noise level law in my apartment complex .

Glad to see that there is an interest in Japanese music in America

I have a theory and I'd love to get some feedback as to it's validity. Could you all help me?

My Theory: People who listen to foreign music are more open-minded, educated, and liberal (aka: not conservative or republican). I don't think this is 100% true, so don't take it as a slam against your politics; I could even be wrong.

I'm not trying to start a fight... just curious. How do all of you stand in regards to this?

Thanks,

James, Seattle, Washington, USA, Earth

I agree with the earlier poster who mentioned Envy. They are a scary band in that they can come out with some hauntingly beautiful music and still offer some punishing hardcore. Ironically, they are not well known in Japan -- at least with the people I have met here -- but are more popular in the US and the UK. I am currently in Japan and am planning on following them around for a few dates of their winter tour of Japan. I "discovered" this band on the old eptonic website, which was a great place to find lesser-known acts.

Another great band is Mono. They are similar to Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai, and put some passionate music. Worth a listen.

I apologize in advance but I must say that Japanese music begins and ends with Shiina Ringo.
Most "musicians" in Japan are even more cookie cutter than they are in the States.

But Shiina...

Youtube
Shiina Ringo - Tsumi to Batsu
Shiina Ringo - Honnou

or

Tokyo jihen (her band) - Sounan
Tokyo Jihen - Himitsu live

if you don't believe me.

I just saw Peelander-Z on Saturday. They were so friggin amazing! I can't wait for them to come back.

As for soothing music. There are several artists out there.
Most artists have at least one soothing song. Even the metal hard rock groups. It really depends on your taste in music.
Gackt
Mai Yamane
Do As Infinity
The Yoshida Brothers

There's a lot of good Korean music too.
