I have a feeling this thread is just for bands, but the first thing I thought of when I saw the title was the shakuhachi. I can listen to that for hours.

I also love the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night music by Michiru Yamane, and the cover of bloody tears by Naoto Shibata on Perfect Selection: Dracula Battle.

Ever since I was a kid - I used to listen to heaps of anime OST's (Gundam Wing's, 5 albums of the Dragon Ball series, Vision of Escaflone..)

For about 6 years now that I have been listening to Mika Nakashima - nothing else I have heard in the so-called mainstream J-POP voices can compare to Mika when she's singing jazz or soul/gospel. I have sticked with her voice ever since I've first listened to her in '03. It is sad & (compellingly) disappointing to see how she's increasingly becoming more and more mainstream towards electro and pop. Much of her creativity and 'feminist' sound signature is lost nowadays.

Having said that, I am predominantly a lounge, bossa nova/samba, nu jazz listener by heart. Orange Pekoe is really a heaven sent combination of Bossa, electro jazz, with a slight hint of pop. A few other Japanese electro's I reg'd listen to are Towa Tei, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Kyoto Jazz Massive.

I used to be a fan of Jrock, though I only occasionally listen to them here and now. Porno Grafitti, Love Psychedelico, Triceratops used to be my fav's.

So many people reinforce the fact that you have to understand the music, 100%, dug in and out from word to word, letter by letter. But to me as an audiophile - a cohesive, musical flow is more important than the technical, cultural context. It's a largely matter of toleration and appreciation - there are some people out there who are box-minded.

Keep this thread alive :).

I just can't get into Japanese music. I mean being a metal-head I liked the 80-90's speed metal...but now they just aren't worth the time.

Jrock and Krock is mostly what I listen to these days. I got into Japanese music probably in high school, probably more through a friend than anime. My friend let me listen to some stuff like Asian Ku-Fung Generation, Glay, tetsu69. Granted ... college, a fast internet connection, and youtube really helped me to explore bands.

Some of the bands I listen to are (besides the one mentioned above): Dir en grey, Maximum the Hormone, girugamesh, Versailles, An cafe, UnsraW, OreSkaBand, & Duel Jewel.

Recently, I have started to check out: Head Phones President, D'espairsRay, & Megamasso

Chage and Aska are pretty good, Aska more than Chage.

Aska has great lyrics and is very passionate when singing.

They have been around a very long time.

You tube the video " RIVER " it's my favorite song.

I'd say 80% of my music is japanese. I've just gotten so used to it. Mikuni Shimokawa has a beautiful voice btw!

I love the music to the anime series "Inuyasha" as well as the series itself. I wish it had not been cancelled. The music and the series truly rocked my world. I am particularly crazy about the songs "Come" and "Every Heart". :-)

^^inuyasha wasn't cancelled. it was just delayed so that the manga series could end. and now that it's over, the anime has restarted. it's called 'inuyasha: the final act."

Among the other Japanese bands that tend to be overlooked, I haven't seen one of my favorites listed. Maximum the Hormone. Imagine mixing Systemof a Down with the Chili Pepppers, adding in a little extra funk, pop, reggae, and metal, and soaking the whole thing in OVER 9000!
