| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 10:15:16 AM | | Sorry.. I don't buy that. Pictures don't lie.. however, some people will misrepresent what the photo means and use things to their advantage to misrepresent certain things. It isn't the camera's fault, it's the persons fault.. lay responsibility where it belongs. | |

Are you going to light a camera for maligned cameras everywhere? Please, someone think of the cameras!

| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 12:00:11 PM | There is one other aspect not mentioned... which I recently discovered for myself.
The monitor! I had to get a different monitor as the other kept changing resolution size on me... the first monitor gave me clear, crisp, clean views... this new one has a 'different' viewing. Not so clear, definitely not crisp and clean... almost a bit of a grainy look, and definitely different shades of colors.
True, a lot has to do with the things mentioned in the first OP... but to my dismay... I've discovered a monitor can make a bit of a difference too. Pics of myself I liked on the old monitor, I don't like on this one!!

| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 4:49:14 PM | This is a pretty bad trend and partly why I'm not dating on here.
My ex is on here with a picture 10-15 years old when he was buff. I wonder what the girls think when they actually meet him, with his scrawny grandma arms & mushy body. :)
One guy I met has a great picture, but in real life his face has gravel in it from an accident which he decided not to get fixed, missing teeth and was much heavier.
Another guy I met from here went from a kind-of Tom Cruise look in his picture to highly overweight, balding in real life.
Really, what do these people think?
|
| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 5:00:55 PM | I always use a webcam because I have no other means to take pics of myself.
What do you suggest? | |
|
| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 5:10:19 PM | | That's funny, I like that. A friend told me that every time he has met a lady on a personals, they didn't look like their picture. Photos do lie. Take someone you know if possible and look at the pictures they post on a personals site. Guys are usually standing near a money object --boat, motorcycle, etc., women project nice cleavage... am I being cynical? | |

| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 5:10:27 PM | Sometimes no matter what pics you put up or what you say... people see what they wanna see... then the reality isn't as nice as the fantasy... JMO :) | |

I like Canon cameras, but other brands will serve you well too. From personal experience I'd avoid Kodak "point & shoot" cameras due to mechanical failure issues. Physically large lenses of good quality will generally serve you better than high megapixels, and high ISO capability (shoots better in low light) is an excellent feature to look for as well. No matter what their megapixel count may be, you're just never going to get great shots with those credit card sized cameras. The tiny lenses just aren't up to the demands. (My two Canon "L-series" lenses are 77mm)
Try "Pricegrabber.com" to search for the best prices on camera gear. I go with BHphotovideo.com or Adorama.com for my Digital SLR stuff, but I'm more into it than most. Newegg.com gives pretty good prices on electronics, too.
For photo editing I'm just running Photoshop Elements 5.0 and can do a lot of stuff with that. PS elements 6.0 is out now. After I get myself a Canon 5D camera I'll invest in Photoshop CS3 (what the pros use for magazine covers and such).
You can get a decent point & shoot, along with fairly simple editing software for cheap if you want. Heck, once you start shooting your kids, friends, and vacations and seeing the results on your monitor you might just spiral into an addiction where the treatment and the cure are one and the same. More stuff!

| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 6:10:52 PM | Canonista,
I've been asked for close ups, pic's from afar etc. You never really what exactly it is your going to encounter when you meet someone. I do however have an interesting item on deception to add to this thread. Imagine this: black back drop and wearing a pair of black pants. This helps conceal a person’s waist size.

Ha! I am not willing to sink money into a camera so I can get a better picture of myself for POF. Guys will just have to take their chances.
But thanks for the suggestions--I know I asked, but I am a poor teacher.

| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 6:51:08 PM | | Don't people naturally post the most flattering pictures of themselves online? I know I do. Is it misrepresenting myself? Maybe a little, since I know I don't always look like that, but it's not a lie since I actually CAN look like that. Does that make sense. | |

| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 7:07:29 PM | A full body shot (or at least the top half) is always a safe bet when you're posting pictures.
In my case, it means displaying my full skinny glory ;) , but thats something that would be obvious when someone meets me anyway, so I figure whats the point in trying to hide it?

What sort of editing do you do to your photos, OP?
All I do is shrink them, and I use Paint.
Lighten/darken shadows and highlights.
Contrast.
Color temperature.
Convert to B&W or selective color. (part color, part black and white). Here's a sample of selective color and about ten other adjustments from a shot I took a couple New Year's Eve's ago in downtown East Lansing, MI. It's not as good as I would've liked, but all I wanted to do was draw the eye to the center of the image and the text. (I saw the whole thing. The guy had it coming.) http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r288/Canonista/HardKnocks.jpg
For posting pics online I'll add a "frame" increasing the size of the "canvas" by a few pixels and filling in the void with a color that'll contrast with a message board's background.
For E-bay shots I'll blur or darken the area surrounding the item for sale to draw the eye toward whatever I'm selling.
Photoshop software is mighty handy once you spend a couple long afternoons with it trying all the features.
This site doesn't allow [img] tags for postig pics, do they?

You're gonna get your fashion police certification revoked.
Prints are fine, it's horizontal stripes that fat people shouldn't wear. Low cut pants with exposed thongs are TOTALLY out, too!
|
| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 7:50:28 PM | Some of my pics were taken with my boyfriends digital camera, but several were taken with my cheap (<$5 ) "cheap point & shoot" 35MM camera. Sometimes I have to lighten them up, if they are under-exposed, using Photoshop. | |
|
| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 7:51:48 PM | My point, Canonista, was that you edit your photos. You change them to highlight what you want to have seen. To draw the eye to certain areas.
You edit- you change, you improve your photos...
I just take them at good angles.

| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 7:56:29 PM | | I like to add people to facebook ... see their 'real' pictures as well as all that private info ... before meeting ... it really helps :) | |

| When photos lie Posted: 12/15/2007 8:03:21 PM | For people who don't want to spend the money on Photoshop:
Google "GIMP 2". It's a free download and has a variety of features.

Prints are fine, it's horizontal stripes that fat people shouldn't wear. (such stripes are not 'recommended' for Any - sept Kate Moss, such) 'Prints'? Very FEW are 'approved' , by Any in zee Fashion Industry (for Morbidly Obese) = F A C T
Low cut pants with exposed thongs are TOTALLY out, too! Now, Actually - That? ...Might jist BE *seen as* a 'redeeming trait' (Humor) by Those that Will Date Fat folks , iffin they have 'other' traits that are 'appealing' - to Them
You're gonna get your fashion police certification revoked. Perhaps (not that i recall being issued one - i AM Old,memory IS *shot* though) HowEver, twould Not be for stating the Obvious.
