Personally, I am not as critical as the OP.
If your pic is a fairly accurate representation of your current appearance
you are good to go.
If it is OBVIOUSLY deceptive, NOT off to a positive start.

With digital photography, there is no excuse for not taking several shots, poses
if you will, to capture a best shot--speaking specifically to lighting, composition, clarity and angle. Results are immediate and don't incur cost.
Distant shots, blurry shots, low lighting or overlit shots, last decade pics-- do not lend themselves to accurate representation. It's not rocket science.

If you can't accept yourself at your current appearance enough to post
a fair representation how can you expect somebody else to?
No amount of rationalization or justification will suffice and are not elements
of a firm foundation.
