WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH COUNTRY MUSIC?

I just think it sounds hideous and it's all sad type stuff, kinda depressing really...I mean I do listen to a few sad/depressing-type rock songs once in awhile but I normally like more aggressive type stuff--metal is the greatest! It sounds good to me and just makes me feel happier. Country singers' voices always sound absolutely HIDEOUS... they sound like they need serious voice lessons if they want to continue to sing. I just can't stand it! Sounds like a person with no education who's never learned to speak properly is trying to sing but doesn't know how...
And the country that isn't sad/depressing is TOO happy for me, which also depresses me. I absolutely hate "happy" music too. I can't relate to that crap! So I feel the same way about rap & pop music...rap sounds hideous, it's just people with no real talent talking really fast and the lyrics are stupid & meaningless, at least in most songs I've heard. And trust me, I've had to listen to ALOT of rap & country, not by choice either! I was forced to listen to country at work--made me wanna blow my brains out, having that crap playing ALL DAY LONG! Then I was married to a guy obsessed with rap music so that made me wanna blow my brains out if I had to listen to that crap 24/7 too.
So I stick with my metal/rock...the REAL music, with REAL lyrics that REAL people can actually relate to!
I'm sure I'm pissing people off and people are gonna argue with me but I don't care. That's my thoughts on country & rap music.

I dont like the country music performed by the younger "recording artists" of today.....Its seems very silly and shallow and commercialized to me.....Give me a woman who can play a fiddle or guitar and tell a riveting and emotional story with just her and her musical instrument anyday...I dont consider airbrushed, lip glossed, tight shirted big tits sticking out young women "mouthing" songs they never even wrote to be stars.....But I absolutely adore the older singer songwriters who write and perform their own stuff and are focused more on bluegrass/blues and folk like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Lori McKenna, Shawn Colvin, Rosanne Cash, Allison Krauss and Union Station, Lucinda Williams, Townes van Zant, Rosalie Sorrels, Natalie McMaster, Marc Cohn, Bruce Hornsby,John Prine, Kris Delmhorst, Loudon and Rufus Wainwright, Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Bill Staines.

They try and say too much with the lyrics these days.. Not too many country songs of today are gonna survive the test of time which is the true test of a great song.

Country music...

Probably the only music I don't like. And don't even get me started on elementary school... errrr.... line dancing.

I can handle the oldschool country blues, but the stuff nowadays is simply laughable.

No, they just have different tastes. Music is in the ear of the listener.

Agree with musicismyporn... good stuff can be found in any genre, IF that's what you're looking for.
If you go by whatever is playing on the local country station, you might like it or you might not. I mostly don't. But I have 4 CDs by Sara Evans, who I consider to be one of the great artists of our times. So is Loretta Lynn, but for me, Sara is more fun to listen to.
What I said about the radio - true of any other type too. I don't hear nearly enough really original art to suit me. But radio is where I first heard some great artists, sometime. Including Jackson Browne, Black Sabbath/Ozzie, Sixpence None the Richer, and Disturbed. On the other hand I've only heard OF Sleater-Kinney being played. Found them and a lot of other people whose CDs I bought on the Net. So - you want more quality, dig for it.

It's not a matter of taste. It's a legitimate form of composition. If you vannot appreciate it for what it is, then you really shouldn't be commenting.
Country music has a genuine, rural, american asthetic. There is much in the early asthetic that has laid the foundations for other forms of music (f'r instance - the blues and rock).
The US midwest in the 30s suffered from financial inslovency AND environmental catastrophy. These were the seeds of the folk movement, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and the rest. Later the south, particularily Nashville, became home to lyrical geniuses and pioneers like Hank Williams , Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash.

Those were the good old days.

Then came a couple funny "trucker " albums, "the streak", Dolly Parton, "the You might be a redneck guy", Toby Keith, Larry the cable guy, intllgunt design and a lotta other sh!t to make you wish you had a lobotomy out there ,on the "309".

What absolute nonsense. Of course it's a matter of 'taste'. Good grief. Listen to yourself. No one is arguing that somebody composed it. Somebody, sometime, somewhere, probably composed a song out of a bunch of cats yowling. No one is going to think much of it, though are they? Country music is complete and utter drivel to me, for the most part - with some rare exceptions.

To say that if somebody cannot 'appreciate it for what it is shouldn't be commenting' is pure arrogance.

Of course, you are absolutely correct that rock 'n' roll has its roots in early country. I can acknowledge that without any problem. But I still don't like country, nor think much of 90% of the people that churn it out. But, that's my taste. And my opinion.

I'm not a country fan, myself, but the bits that i do like are the older stuff. Sure it's heartbreaking and depressing, but it was utterly beautiful.

I used to really dislike country music until a few years ago when my favorite "pop" radio station started playing nothing but R&B and Hip Hop. So I switched to the country station and actually discovered a lot of artists who I really enjoy now. I've seen a few of these acts live and have to say some of them were amazing. Just saw the Kenny Chesney "Poets and Pirates Tour". Keith Urban opened for him and IMO stole the show. He is an amazing guitarist - I was shocked at how talented he is. Gary Allan is also a new favorite of mine. He kind of snubs Nashville and their attitude in regards to becoming a sell-out/pin-up boy - his music is heartfelt and his voice is gravely and refreshingly unique. As for female artist, my vote goes to Allison Kraus. She sings like an angel.

Once upon a time ago, I used to listen to it. But then the day came that I heard it, in its more current incarnation as it is popularly now. I mean really listened to it and heard the lyrics and the lifestyles that most of them were mostly singing about, and right then and there I asked myself if that's what I really want to 'aspire to' (you become what you are exposed to) in life. That was the day that I chose to move out of the trailer park and move on....
Sometimes there's very little that we individually control in this world, but that still doesn't mean you can't vote with your feet on some things once in a while too.

In my opinion, the new country bands such as Rascal Flats, is not country music for it lacks soul and not to mention the traditional "twang" that was present in country music years ago. Also, most of these new singers have no clue about country roots for they have lived in the city all of their life. It's called country music for a reason, not "I never left the city" music. Give me Johnny, Hank, etc., and day. FYI, for those of you who like roots based country, check out Corb Lund...he's great!

I was tortured with that crap when I was a child, by my stepfather who made us always listen to it. So now I refuse. Every now and then they'll be one song I like, usually that ''pop'' song that is being done by a country artist.

There's nothing wrong with it, I just can't stand listening to it. I don't know what it is, I hate it.

It all started with that "young country" crap in the 90's, and it's been pretty much downhill since then.

yung country crap in the 90's? all downhill since then?? WTF are you talking about man??

Country music is HUGE!!

People who don't like it are VERY closeminded.

If any of you like Elvis, then well guess what? If it wasn't for artists like him, hank williams and Willie Nelson, country music today would be NOTHING!

I can name a bunch of great artists here, who sold more albums, had more #1 hits, and had better $$$ making tours than any other musical artists around.

80's metal crap and grunge are so over...

country was the beginning of american music. let's not forget it lead to rock n roll and eventually hip-hop. anyone who can't appreciate the moaning lyrics of a hank williams sr. song just isn't listening. i don't know about you, but i can relate to heartaches and headaches more than ****es and bling.

I was speaking in terms of quality, not sales. A lot of the "country" today is pop with steel guitars. A far cry from what the likes of Hank, Willie, Waylon, and Merle were doing years ago. THEY are country music.

Furthermore, not liking a specific genre of making doesn't make someone close minded. Surely, there's a genre you don't like. Does that make you close minded?

As for 80's music, it's certainly not over. There are many 80's acts currently touring, and they wouldn't be doing so if no one was attending the shows.

I agree. There's no "problem" with country music!!

This is some of the most interesting, amusing, entertaining music out there today. The new country singers that Silken Fire talks about are great, but even the women: Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Jewel and Jennifer Nettles are great. I disagree that they only rely on physical attributes. Their music speaks for itself.

I wish we had a country station up here in NYC. I'm not from up here (I just happen to be living here) and I guess they're a little snobbish here about country music. I have to listen to stations in other parts of the country to hear it.

uh...check your facts... EARLY ROCK was influenced by country and blues....

Really? It's happening now. I hold up the relationship between Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson as repudiation of that statement...
