Lets face facts the Music Industry today for the most part is run by tastless money crunchers. Finding good authentic Country, Rock , Jazz and even rap is hard to find. Somehow they manage to turn something good pure and fun into over produced mindless Pop American Idle wasteland barf.
It takes strong young talent to over come the many pit falls of todays music industry.

Yeah... if the mainstream loves it I usually hate it. Carrie Underwood is a fellow Okie and the friend of a friend but her 'fame' seems like much ado about nuthin IMHO. She sings well but not great, she lacks stage presence, and if she is selecting the music she records she sucks at it.
Check out Hayes Carll. He'll never be appreciated by the CMA but neither were The Outlaws who were only recognized out of necessity when they burned up the charts and sold out the concert halls. The boy obviously was raised up solid and seems to almost disassociate himself from county (much like Guy Clark and others who seem to prefer labels like Americana (IF they MUST wear one)... but I've always been a sucker for singer/songwriters anyway.

Too formatted. The tunes are too repetitive. Twang.
However, also at times great stories, and good craftsmanship, and periodically uplifting. And what is there not to like about Taylor Swift?

i would just like to say that i am a rocker chick definately, but i also listen to other types of music and country is one of them. i have 2 country music channels programmed in my car. i think country just has a bad rep. and besides that, new country keeps getting poppier anyway. it's not as "country" as it used to be. i'm not sure if i had a point...

The problem with country music is that it has barely existed in the past few decades. What is called country music now is no where near actual country music.

All most "country" music is now are pop tunes with a hint of slide guitar and a southern accent.

O-T-B...I'm with you. Remember when Aerosmith released that hit love song, then it showed up on country charts by a country artist...and it goes on and on. It's like we have a generic brand of music now, and the only thing that defines the genre is a desicion to use either a pedal steel or electric guitar, and a matter of a vocal inflection.
I love Cash and Hank. That was real. Cash wasn't a great technical singer, but it was honest. He recorded Live fom Folsom Prison against the label's better advice, and proved them wrong. You can't do that in today's hit-churning mediocre music machine.

What's right about country music is the tradition of the troubadors being carried on. Portable songs and stories are still taken by singers who can fill an outback hall and entertain without all the techno stuff as easily as they can set up all the gear and pack a city hall. I'm not a great country fan but as long as there's a story to tell, as long as there's a guitar handy, as long as there's someone to tap a foot and listen to the words, country LIVES.

Country music now is far too depressing and most of it sounds the same, it's just terrible. I find it sad that the good country artists don't really get much credit, or the ones who play guitar are overhyped yet a guy like Brad Paisley can go out there and rip it up and people blow him off because his songs have guitar solos and he actually knows how to play. Albert Lee is another great country player, he is a Brit too yet he gets no credit for what he does cause he isn't a frickin redneck who doesn't sing songs about broken pickup trucks.

This is how you play country guitar :P

I have never been able to relate to a country song. That's the reason I don't like it. I also don't like the vocals of most country singers, they usually all sound pretty similar. I'm sure if I heard a country band that was different than I'd like it but so far there isn't one that I know of.

One thing that happened is that Garth Brooks made it possible for any hick with a guitar and cowboy hat to become a superstar.
I don't like his songs but he's well respected in the CM community for that reason.
He also incidently sold twice as many records as anyone else.

from post # 360

There is only one country musician...Johnny Cash. Other than that? They are all pop-star wannabees. I absolutely hate country music as it sounds all the damn same....and I also agree with the poster about Shania...her music is pure pop all she did was throw on some boots!!

That's it.....just Johnny ?

What about Allan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Alabama, George Strait, Brooks & Dunn ..............they all sound the same ?
I was impressed when George won a bunch more awards this past year.....I forget but did that include Album of the year ?
George also holds sellout and attendance records in a number of cities and the most #1 hits by any singer.

I agree about Shania.......and it's been a while since I really liked a female country singer.......mind you she is'nt hard to look at.

Anybody remember Tanya Tucker or Highway 101 ?

I did not read all these posts so if this was stated before just skip over what I have to say.

If there is a problem with country music as the op asks, the problem would be with the people who are purchasing and supporting it. The industry is driven by bucks pure and simple. The industry figures out what is currently selling and then they actively seek out acts that are similar and market them to make money. So it gets boring fast.

BTW, I would not limit this to country music. turn on a smooth jazz station and you will hear the same mundane crap being played from one artist to the next over and over.

the answer..............dig deeper.............turn off Clear Channel owned stations.
There are incredible country artists out there as well as incredible jazz artists, you have to look for them.

1 more thing, I don't fault the artists for looking for the formula to sell records. If they find it and have success with it, God bless'em

climbing off the soap box now..........your turn.

I can't stand country music. I heard 18 years worth of country music growing up at home, and I hear country music every day now now at work because many of the co workers listen to it. I don't like the sound, the style, or the songs.

To quote Waylon Jennings, "Garth Brooks did for country music what panty hose did for finger ****ing." That sums it all up right there.
