Do some research before you post skyee?. It was Johnny Cash, that did the remake of the NIN song, Hurt, before he died. I didnt care for it.

I am a huge country fan, going to see Tim Mcgraw at Casinorama in August. All 3 shows sold out in less then 10 minutes, gotta tell you something.

Country music is not like it used to be, not all the lyrics are like one post described.

I think that Country Music is a lot like the Blues. Classic Country music deals with the problems and ups and downs of adult life. To fully appreciate it, you need to get some age and life experience under your belt.

When I was a teenager and a young man, it wasn't relevant to my life. When I hit forty, I began to understand it and appreciate it. Good music, of practically any genre, has a universality to it...that's why good music is timeless.

When I was young, I couldn't understand how anybody could listen to a singer like George Jones. For the past twenty years, he's been one of my all-time favorite artists. He's the Sinatra of Country...an unparalleled interpreter of lyrics.

I love George Jones, Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline, Conway Twitty, Ronnie Milsap, Don Williams, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves, Eddy Arnold, Hank Sr. and Hank Jr, Randy Travis, etc., etc.

That said, I don't understand the appeal of modern country (the last ten years, or so)...just seems like very superficial, poppish music that doesn't address real-life issues at all. Shania and Faith Hill are about 1% country and 99% pop...they should be getting their airplay on pop stations, not country ones. But that's just my opinion.

Delfan,

The thing is, the modern stuff IS pop, and who can actually understand the appeal of that

I think Toby Kieth is doing all right. Like his voice and his song selection.

My opinion. If you have any kind of appreciation for music, the history of it, the musicianship, the writing, you have got to at least appreciate some forms of country, even some of the modern stuff. I think it is fantastic that the likes of Jack White, Kid Rock and Trent Reznor and many other pop/rock artists before them found appeal in some country artists. It shows a willingness to appreciate, if not understand, and respect true talent.

I am not saying ya have to like it, but ya should at least try and appreciate it.

OR, you can live in a cultural bubble and assume that your personal taste is RIGHT and the only way to go. But if it is bad, why does it continue to be profitable?

I love all music, country being included. However like OTB pointed out it has gotten a little off track. There is more pop in country than should be. Artist like Shania, LeAnn Rimes, Dixie Chicks, have ruined a great genre of music. There are still a few out there trying to keep it real like Rascal Flats, and Toby, Tim, Terry Clarke. But the true country music is getting harder and harder to find these days.

Country, like all musical genres has it's junk and it's gems, and like all genres the junk outnumbers the gems. The country I enjoy would be the older stuff from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Willie Nelson has done some great stuff, although I wouldn't classify all his music as country.

I love Alison Krauss and Union Station. Some of the finest musicians you're going to find. Better classified as bluegrass, although I would call it "progressive bluegrass".

OTB I respest your musical knowledge and taste but, your a music snob.
Pop is short for popular right? so a hell of a lot of people understand the appeal and I'm one of them and I'm probably a music snob too. But I'm a Canadian and so's Shania Twain so f*ck u. Doesn't mean I like her music although some I do, it just means I can't stand back and let you dis the stupid b****. Oops I think that came out wrong.

Elvis Costello was at the forefront of a reinvention of pop music in the late 70's made four great albums and then the 5th had a warning label that said Warning Country Music Enclosed. The record of course bombed. He's messed around with virtually every style since and recently had the brains to marry another Canadian singer. his latest album features Lucinda Williams and Emmylou which means it has some serious country cred.

Here it is then. The only thing wrong with country music is the label my friends. Get past that and if the music is genuine and inspired who gives a damn what label they stick on it, get the f*ck over it.

Ed: Oh yeah, That's right I'm not from Texas, Texas wants me anyway. go Lyle

Too funny amigo.

In fairness, I must admit that I haven't listened to Country radio, with any regularity, for about twelve to fourteen years now. I hear it at odd intervals, or on the televised Country music award shows.

Based on what recent music I've heard...in general...I prefer "Alt. Country", which seems to me, to be more "authentically" Country, than to what is now "mainstream" country. The "Alt. Country" genre would include artists such as Dallas Wayne, Don Walser, Libbi Bosworth, Mandy Barnett (really, Mandy is a good old-fashioned "Torch" singer), Dale Watson, Rosie Flores, etc.

Of course, the old guard is still putting out first-rate music, as witness recent offerings from George Jones, Merle Haggard, Gene Watson and others. They just are largely ignored by mainstream Country radio.

But the currently "mainstream" Country sounds obviously reach a large and devoted audience...I just don't happen to be a part of that audience, based on what I've heard.

I also think it represents a window into a culture. Lets face it, Not all Americans live in urban centers. Country has rural roots. many People who like it or identify with it grew up in farming communities, going to church, playing football with their cousins (who were their closest neighbors) hunting and fishing (so the family could have some meat) working some tough blue collar jobs on oil rigs or at the local feed mill. A lot of these folks used to entertain each other with entire families playing some sort of instrument. (PANDY, chime in here) and they write songs about the life they know. And yeah, they drive trucks, drink whiskey, and cheat a little, so why not sing about it.

I guess folks who dont like it generally dont identify with that lifestyle. Probably the same reason why many folks dislike hiphop.

Now if you will excuse me, Real brunette and I will be two-stepping for a while

The problem with country music, Juan is not the music, but the fact that this genre of music just "stole" rock and roll, put in a twany singer and guitar and called it country music. It's not. Also, country music in the past 4 or so years has become associated with the "pseudo-patriotic-redneck American". That is the reason I do not want to be associated with it. I assume that may be why many others do not choose to say they like it.

.., wow,..i think that's the most ignorant statement i've ever heard! .. anyone who knows anything about music can tell you that rock & roll comes from country & western(as well as blues & jazz & gospel etc.) Adam came before Moses, country came before rock n' roll, and that's the truth ruth. as for " psuedo-patriotic-redneck-america" - sounds like something you "stole" out of Newsweek magazine!

Country music is the white man's blues--REAL country music, that is. Dwight Yoakum seems to still keep a traditional country tone. Of course, ALL music genres evolve/change/progress.
But then again, I've always liked music that IS NOT in the mainstream. Now, while I may not go out and buy a lot of country cd's,,it sure is fun to shuffle around the dance floor with a pretty girl,,shinin' those belt buckles and scuffing up the toes of your boots.
