I used to listen to country when I dated a guy who listened to nothing but country music. It's cool I guess if you like to wear jeans, cowboy hats, and do line dancing but I'm just not into that. In my opinion, its just hard to listen to. Sorry!

well call me a redneck if you want but i will be a country girl getting ass redneck hahaha i play in a band and we cover rage,nin,alice in chains,disturbed,godsmack basically all the heavy stuff. i would rather listen to country though it relaxes me and as far as im concerned id rather have a girl with a cowboy hat and torn jeans then a freak girl with nose chains connected to her belly button ring connected to the chain on her wallet.......lmao

The problem for me with country is ALSO probably the reason people get hooked on it. There are maybe half dozen different patterns to the songs, they all sound so similar if you dont like one, chance are you won't like any, and vice versa. The chord progressions are always the same.

Another reason I don't listen to country is I can't tell one singer from the next, at least with the male vocalists, they literally sound the same. So, like with the song structures, if you don't like one, chances are you won'y like any of them.

However I do enjoy singing and playing "Folsom Prison Blues" on guitar when the mood is right.

Loree Morgen(sp?) was pretty good, I used to be able to listen to one of her cd's the whole way through. Some co-workers got me listening to her at a restaurant I worked at.

modern country is a reprise of early rock and roll....with a few dobros and fiddles....I am a huge a fan of it...but I was born in Texas and I live in Mississippi, but I didn't always like country. In fact if it weren't for the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan...I probably would have never started listening to folk and bluegrass which led to classic country which fed right into modern country.....But I also think quite a bit of it is growing up, maturing, and and understanding the themes of country music.

the problem with country music is that its not even country music. Anyone who has seen the movie Ray would know that he says in the movie if anyone in the room knew country music which basically blues. People's concept of country now is not even close to what country music was. Most listeners have never listened to real country music, the old stuff like Chuck Berry and Johnny Cash among others and yet they think that the new stuff is country music. Well all I can say to them is that the new stuff is so white its not even funny. Or as some people like myself call it, its **stardized blues.

I'm not really interested in the more modern "pop-country" that gets a lot of radio play. A couple years ago as I was getting more and more into music I started discovering some of the old classics like Patsy Cline, Mearle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Sr, etc. Then I also discovered a great band called The Backstabbers (they advised on the Oh Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack) that play very old style country with acoustic instruments around a big mic. Country has this great ability to be very personal and wholesome. Weather they're lamenting about a bad year on the farm, singing about murdering their spouse, praising God, or remeniscing about good times there is a lot of meaning there. A lot of the music was done without a lot of flash. Just musicians that enjoyed what they did and got by with what they had. To me that's very sincere and there is a lot of meaning in that. I love Neko Case and I find it odd that she's considered "alt-country" when she probably has more association with tradition than most of the big country diva's combined (and one heck of a set of pipes).

To me country music is great when it's humble smokey bar music. Not that big shiny stuff that's out there today.

I was brought up around lots of country music. I think its great and has more meaning than someone screaming into the microphone and not being able to understand a damn word they're saying but when i'm not listening to country I have rock playing.

Statistically it is the most popular music in the world. So It stands to reason perhaps those not interested just simply do not have a properly trained ear and aren't sophisticated enough, all be it doesn't take much, to get it. After all you can hear every word.

I can't stand 'radio' country music. It's just a corporate formula. Has been for more than half a century.

You want country music? Just check out some of the thousands of bands playing all the local bars out in the country. You'll have to wade through a pile of sh1t, but the good stuff is there to be found.

I tollerate it... I really don't enjoy it, I think it is the combo of tacky lyrics and the twang... not to mention the accents... why is it they often sing with accents even when they have no accent when speaking normally (comparatively southern US accent V.S someone from Alberta Canada) .. weird...

a lot of it is watered down with rock now compare hank williams to the more recent people there is quite a difference hell look a shania twang or whatever her name is.. she crosses back and forth between rock and country it is hard to tell anymore

so I say I like everything but rap and I just tolerate country...(well I don't like chinese opera much either but at least I don't understand the words and it isn't blasted out of every car radio and mall stores)..

I like Country Music. I like all sorts of Music.
I see nothing wrong with Country Music.
The older type of Country Music was sad heartache tales.
Kind of Depressing.. Now a days the music is upbeat and fun.
So I like the Newer Country Music.

There's no 'real' problem with country music, the perceived problem is one of production. Adding the southern drawl or twang to your voice is immediately going be disliked by some people. The sound of the pedal steel guitar can be irritating. The lyrics are by and large quite contrived (in my opinion) and tend to be about subject matter that is so similar to itself song after song that you're in a constant state of feeling you've heard the tune before. Modern country is suffering from the same affliction that modern rock is, primarily that its being produced in a boring manner. The tunes are all loud, there are no real low points, the drums all sound HUGE, the bass is massive, there are lots of backup harmonies layered over everything. So, the issue isn't with the music, its how the music sounds. Similar to disliking heavy metal, there's just too much noise for some people in metal. Its often hard to hear around the rough edges, for example, I love Tom Waits, but lots of people can't get past the 'sound' of his voice to hear the melodies. So that's my little rant. Cheers all, and by the way, I do really like country, but rootsier stuff. Willie Nelson, Kathleen Edwards, Old Crow Medicine Show, Corb Lund, all sorts. SEeee ya

Country Music hit its pinnacle in the mid 90's. Now it has gone the route of all music genres. capitalizing on one sound. Pop/rock with a steel guitar or violin put into the songs to give it that "country" sound. Also Nashville is what they call incestuous (sp?) where you get the same people producing a bunch of artists and the same musicians play on most artists cd's. And they nickname it a "tin can ally" as there are groups of people who sit down each day to write songs for artists.
Shania Twain changed that by writing and co-writing her own stuff, never heard of in Nashville. Then everything has changed where you got artists now wanting to take control of thier careers too.
Funny thing is, strip down Shania's songs and they will have the same basic sound as Def Leppard's Hysteria cd more or less.
Listen to Pour Some Sugar On Me and then listen to Shania's Honey I'm Home or Any man Of Mine...basically the same song but Mutt Lange puts a bit of a country sound added to his wife's stuff.
Last year some good stuff came out, but then Country fizzled a bit with too many ballads.
Jo Dee Messina had 2 good hits last year with My Give A Damn's Busted and Delicious Surprise, Brooks & Dunn with the catchy Play Something Country with a great video, Jason Aldean with Hicktown for example. But now seems the hits have not come out in such a strong swing like those last year.
Country seems to get a stigma still as a redneck, smalltown thing. Here in Toronto we no longer have a country music station, those 2 we do get are in Hamilton Country 95.3 and in Oshawa KX96.
I like everything, last night on the ACM Awards Rascal Flatts collaberated with Kelly Clarkson on a great tune...not bad.

lets see country music is traditional roots and Americana music. Modern country music is a fake imitation and more pop. The only modern country singers worth listening to are Marty Stuart and Dwight Yoakam who keep in touch with the past. Other than that modern country music sucks but then again so does most music now

problem today is music is so generic and very few artists or songs stand out from the others. With so many of these singing contest shows out too, many people get a short stint with fame as the audience is awaiting for the next season of American Idol, Canadian idol, Nashville Star. Originality has now become long gone. A certain sound surfaces and the music industry milks it. Like Hollywood does with genres in movies.

the problem with country music... and most popular music these days is that it's not going anywhere. It's not changing...

How many people listen to relatively new ideas in music like "weather report" or "Marcus Miller" or anything of that nature?

Probably none...

Since the time rock music became popular.... the 1950s, the music has stagnated...

Before that, went through rapid periods of growth from 1900 up until that point... then "blah".

I think we liked it too much and we're finally starting to get bored with it.

I really enjoyed a lot of the nineties "alt-country. More of these artists had a tie or a closer sound to the classic country than those (cough, cough) posers, coming out of Nashville these days. Maybe that's why they got the alt-country tag, seeing as the country tag was used by the pop country artists. I grew up listening to country music, the old stuff, and started rediscovering it as an adult.

Rarely ever listen to new country these days.
