Frankly folk music kicks country's ass. The more independent the country, the better it is. Pushing the fold...

Not everyone will like them, but check out "The Fembots" the name doesn't shout country... but they have this neat urban honkey tonk feel. I like them. Not good for dancing though. The Chieftans are classics too.

The problem with country music is that it is predictable. I can sing along with a country song that I don't even know and finish half the lines. There's not much originality. In order to be good music for the common people the language is so dumbed down that a 3 year old can follow it.

Then there's the fake twang and use of words like "aint" that no one in their right mind actually uses. People in Ontario don't speak with a twang, but all of a sudden when they become country singers they drawl out their vowels and talk like they're from Nashville. WTF?

There's a set chord that country comes in. It's easy to play if you know the few cords it uses.

Then there's the speed. Take Shania - Man I feel like a Woman. Not at all the same danceable beat as something like "I believe in Miracles.... you sexy thing..." I try not to fall asleep on the dance floor when country comes on. But it's not easy. 1,2,3,4 yawn 1,2,3,4

I much prefer jazz, rock, latin, ANYTHING but country.

There's nothing wrong with Country... people just think it's cool to slag on people from the country since no one's gonna argue with them in the city! That being said, like any genre, there's an artist or two that makes me wanna poke forks in my ears!

I don't hate country music. But it has this image that the country music establishment is made up of proud Aryan Dixie Flag waving Dukes Of Hazzard Hee Haw watching Republicans. That's the Country music establishment. Turn on the Country Music Awards and it's a convention of these people.

On the other side of the fence are the outsider smarty pants open minded liberal country people types who don't fit in that Nashville establishment and are looked upon as admired outsiders or with open disgust- Dixie Chicks, Allison Kraus, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and others usually only heard on satellite alt country stations or seen Austin City Limits.

I listen the latter and have no interest in listening to the former. Those people give country music a bad image and finding anything uncliched or interesting by that first group is a tough task. I guess what it comes down to is Country music has it's own blue state vs. red state thing going on.

I always end up going to a country music artist concert solo as no one I know would dare go to see Martina McBride, Vince Gill, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson or Sugarland. I am even going to see Shakira solo too. Most people I know like what is popular now like Rap, Hip-Hop, R&B, Rock...

the problem with country music is that it wants to be rock and roll for women. Sorry if I insult anyone (ladies), as a long time non lover of country, I've seen it go from the honky tonk to a more rock format. Sure there is some good stuff in all types of music as well as some pretty bad- thats all a matter of taste. Love what you like. But if anyone remembers the metal hairbands from the mid eighties with the wigs and the spandex, perhapse you will see a parallel with country going the same way. All the guys are put up to be alpha males and the women! Well lets just say Shania Twain or Trish Yearwood. 100% formula. Can anyone tell me if there are any fat or normal looking country stars? Besides Garth Brooks lol

I dislike a lot of country music just because of the level of similarity between a lot of the songs. There are exceptions to the rule ofcourse. I just enjoy music that seems a bit more original. I grew up around country music and there is definately a set of values associated with listeners as well.

The problem is people stereotyping it and never giving it a chance.

Country music is not just about pickup trucks, drunk rednecks, confederate flags and Skoal.

You can keep Toby Keith. He's disposable.

I will stick with Marty Robbins, Emmylou Harris, Faron Young, Michael Martin Murphey, Sons of the San Joaquin, Patsy Montana, Tex Ritter, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, Johnny Cash (You bet!), Riders in the Sky, Luke the Drifter (And his alter ego!), Loretta Lynn, Asleep at the Wheel, Chris LeDoux, George Strait, Jimmie Rodgers, Patsy Cline, Waylon & Willie...and the boys. Not to mention a million others...

When I die...I may not go to Heaven...
I don't know, if they let cowboys in...
If they don't, just let me go to Texas, boy!
Cause Texas, is as close as I've been...

Yup

Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, John Hartford, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Spyboy. Buddy and Julie Miller, Newgrass Revival, Bill Monroe, Buck Owens and Don Rich, tons of great artists...

Sadly, the best of any genre, isn't good fodder for the sheep that the music industry target markets to.

And most of it remains a well kept secret

My parents always had country blasting through thier 8-track when I was young. I hate it and can only tolerate maybe 5 songs now. I'm not into 2-toothed redneck hillbilly music about being lonesome and divorced. Blah

Well it goes without saying that not everyone will like every genre of music ... that being said ... my beef with the current country music ( the last 10 yrs in particular) is that it is no different than other pop music ... image is everything and substance is secondary ... you can buy yourself a tasty sirloin steak ( like a good Merle Hagard tune ) or eat a 'low in nutrition' Big Mac (a bad Big and Rich tune) ... now if you'll excuse me i think i'll go 'eat' some Poncho and Lefty i plum reckon ! ... Willie Nelson and Merle

The only problem i have with country is the "new" country.....Those "stars" are just in it for the money and they look about as country as a soap opera..and they all sound and look the same....That Gretchen Wilson looks and acts like a whore and she has no talent at all, but nowadays, its all in the looks, rather than talent..sad, sad....I like the old stuff: Loretta, Hank, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline...to newer stuff from Rosanne Cash and Mary Chapin Carpenter..Back then, character and talent sold records, not how much Botox youve had and what your weight/breast size is

Pretty much what ppl said earlier..... the sound is very derivative. And being a city-slicker, I cannot relate to a lot of the narratives. Pet Shop Boys all the way!

Country Music tells it like it is, its no holds barred. Nothing can tell someone how a broken heart feels like a country song for example Rascal Flatts song. "what hurts the most", Nothing can tell someone how much they move you like a well placed country song, like Tim McGraw and Faith Hills song "its your love" or any other song the two of them sing about each other. There isn't a song alive that can bring you to tears, cause for every single one of us it reminds us of someone we lost to young, or if nothing else you think of a parent whos child might have been murdered or died to young of some kind sickness, I am referring to "Who You'd Be Today" by Kenny Chesney.
I love all kinds of music, but nothing can put me in a romantic mood like slow country love songs.
I think some people don't like country music cuase they don't like hearing the reality of life, the bad and the sad. They say its depressing as hell, I think they may think its depressing cause they heard a song something that might of reminded them of a very painful event.
Im sure there is some who just don't like country at all, but I would also be willing to guess they probably never really give it a fair change, never been really exposed to it. You put someone in a work enviroment where they have to work everyday for 2 weeks I guarntee most of them will come out with a new found appreshation for country music.

I think it all depends on what you grew up with. Other genres and styles can belt out a good heartbreak song. And telling it like it is is good sometimes, but other times clever wordplay provides an added spark.

As it is, I shudder at the fact that all they play in my town is country, gangsta rap, and heartland rock.

The reason I don't like it is the 'twang'. Why do some of the country singers speak with no or very little southern accent but then feel compelled or required to sing with a twang? I'm not putting down those who have a drawl I just think it gets over exaggerated when they're singing. A lot of country songs are about being heartbroken and I think drawl or twang accents the mood of those songs...perhaps that's one reason.

I do like a lot of Johnny Cash tunes but he was not of the country genre we hear today. He had his own style and made his own rules.

I will say this: As a farmer I have nothing bad to say about "She Thinks My Tractor's Sex"

Most of it bores me. I like raw, old country and a few very select other bands. I just don't care for the overall beat to it. And now it's the new "trend" again and I am not a trend follower. I listen to what I like. I don't listen because it is "in" at the time.

I'm not too crazy about any of the "new"(uh-huh) country music,,,sounds like re-hashed '70's pop to me.(oh, but it $ell$!) Bleh!

If you want to hear real country music, go to a bluegrass festival,,hear it live,,standing 6 ft. away from the musicians. It will be time well spent, and you're bound to meet some the nicest, down to earth folks--and some awesome pickers!

Dwight Yoakam has collection of acoustic tunes available that very well captures the essence of traditional country music. check it out sometime.

Also, dancing to those slow "buckle shinin'" country songs is fun too.(foreplay, wink)

I think these new country artists need to take a crash course on the roots of country and learn who their forebearers were:Leadbelly, Hank Williams, Howling Wolf, Bob Wills, Loretta Lynn, Carolyn Hester...I agree, they sound like bubblegum stars, synthezied, too pretty pop idols..They certainly are not artista dn the vast majority of them dont even write their own songs...Example:..My roomate loves Sara Edwards' song Bible Song...I had to inform her that songer songwriter Lori McKenna wrote that song, shes the true artist...When I listened to Edwards cover, I thought, ugg...way too processed..yuk

from a guitarists point of view, I prefer to play different styles of music that actually have more than 3 chords involved, besides its usually about heartbreak or someones dog dying or some equally wrist-slashing topic. Bluegrass is cool though. There are some talented musicians involved. P.s. been so busy looking at forums that I just cremated my dinner! Revenge for all you "dying dog" fans! ;)

I am such a huge country music fan, and I think that's just because I was grown up on it. it's what my parents listened to, and what was played on the radio and in our house, so I just grew to love it. Personally, I think the reason why people despise it, is just because they all think it all has to do with 'rednecks' and 'hicks' and all that. But in reality, I know of only a few songs that actually could be labled that. For the person who said they couldn't understand what they're talking about in country music.. uh... have you heard the crap that the rappers put out? Talk about not understanding what they're talking about!
