Ran out of time before I thought to save it first before posting. I'm too annoyed to rebuild that list so here's just the first and after 20+ yrs still my favorite song ever.

"Heart of a Saturday Night" by Tom Waits from the 70s.
Too many from the 80s (though none that seem to get referred to as "80s music").
Since when was the 90s "retro"? God, you're making me feel old!

Blues-- The Night Time Is The Right Time (Ray Charles)
Country-- Thanks Again (Ricky Skaggs)
Alternative or Punk -- I Wanna Be Sedated (The Ramones)
