I had a huge list of songs.
Ran out of time before I thought to save it first before posting. I'm too annoyed to rebuild that list so here's just the first and after 20+ yrs still my favorite song ever.

Lonely in your nightmare-Duran Duran

"Feel A Whole Lot Better" by The Byrds or "Sweet Jane" by VU from the 60s.
"Heart of a Saturday Night" by Tom Waits from the 70s.
Too many from the 80s (though none that seem to get referred to as "80s music").
Since when was the 90s "retro"? God, you're making me feel old!

I'd have to say that it would be David Bowie's "Life On Mars?". Just brilliant. I've seen so many covers of this song - almost starting to collect them all.

I have to go with "alternative 80's" - Lips Like Sugar, Fall on Me, Just Like Heaven, Oh L'amour, Suedehead, How Soon is Now?....

I really need to start listening to current bands...any recommendations for a REM, U2, Classic Rock, Alternative 80's fan?

There are too many great ones to narrow it down to one definitive song, so i'll throw 4 out there for retro.
Classic Rock-- You Can't Kill Rock N Roll (Ozzy Osbourne)
Blues-- The Night Time Is The Right Time (Ray Charles)
Country-- Thanks Again (Ricky Skaggs)
Alternative or Punk -- I Wanna Be Sedated (The Ramones)

"list your favorite" type threads do not meet that criteria.
