I'm not sure that this is such as silly chat, as one person opined. After all, smoking is an addiction, and like many addictions, including those of a sexual nature, is tied in with a particular type of neurochemical imbalance certain individuals ("addictive personalities") happen to possess....

The studies I linked to are valid. Just because the page didn't load on one of them doesn't mean the study itself isn't valid. Like I said: I was trying to indicate that there are studies out there concerning this topic. It's easy enough to Google them if anyone is interested, since we're all online. If the conclusions don't apply to a given poster, that's perfectly alright, Ngat. No one cares about a specific poster's smoking status or sexual history. We're talking about a general trend. It's really embarrassing for you that you felt the need to detail your specifics. It's being defensive. No one gives a damn.
Let me clue you in on something else, Ngat. When discussing scientific theory as fact, it doesn't mean that the theory is proven beyond the shadow of a doubt. It means that there is sufficient scientific evidence to substantiate the theory until better data comes along. A theory, by definition, will always be falsifiable and subject to further scrutiny and modification. The theory itself, backed by scientific evidence, IS considered "fact" until disproved. Look up the definition of a scientific theory if you're confused by all this. Therefore, based on the many scientific studies on this topic, it is a FACT that women who smoke are more promiscuous than non-smoking women.
I'm not embarassed, why would I be? I am kind of proud that I made it this long. Maybe, I am bragging a little.  And, I thought forumns were where people were suppose to express themselves and learn from others. First, you try to convince us of this theory and now you can read other "peoples" minds. Wow, you are talented. :)
Oh inconvertible as in inconvertible currency? I just never heard anyone use that term before in regards to theories and such. At first I thought this was some sort of new car I should be looking into getting and was going to ask one of my guy friends if I should be getting an introconvertible. :)
Why are you attacking me? I'm not the only person that thinks your illogical. Look at all the responses. I always use examples of my life to relate to other people. It's along the same line as "No one gives a damn" that you are wrong but you keep trying to prove yourself right.
Clue me in on scientific theory please. You seem so intelligent and know what you are talking about. 
BTW-one of my undergrads is in psychology and I am sure we brushed the topic on "scientific theories", since all of it mostly consisted of theories and studies. But please educate me. It has been about 10 years since I have been in school. BTW, I also have an undergrad in finance, and it took me a whole year to finish 36 hours in grad school to finish my MBA, so please do educate me I am a little slow... You seem very knowledgeable on the subject....ummmm....not! 
Maybe you are right....maybe I do need to grow up. Your older and wiser right?

I gave up smoking and found my testosterone levels increased dramatically, so I was hornier , therefore by these stats, less likely to cheat( I never have and never will, that pesky integrity thing). You think those stats are bad , listen to this, 100% of all POF users will die at the end of their life time. Scary, huh. Also 100% of all people on here will get old if they live long enough. Just because someone is a smoker does not necessarily mean they are promiscuous. I know women who smoke but are in quite solid and stable marriages with kids. Perhaps some smokers are promiscuous, and perhaps also some people who drive cars are promiscuous. It doesn't mean driving cars makes people more inclined to have sex. | |

Still the conclusion of the study - adjusting for such things - is that smokers are less risk-averse and more likely to repeat risky behavior presumably because of the addictive nature of smoking AND risk-taking. | |

I see stuff like this all the time in the news. Drinking coffee is suddenly a dangerous activity; then they'll say drinking milk or tea is dangerous. Eating cake is dangerous. And so on.

Saying that most women who smoke are more promiscuous is basically like saying that most women who carry a purse must be church goers since most women who go to church do indeed carry a purse. Or since most people who work as sex trade workers smoke, all people who smoke are sex trade workers. Or how about this one... most men who go hunting grow out their beards, therefore every man who has a beard is a hunter....!
Knowing HOW to interpret statistics and why, and who, and where, and by whom and FOR whom they were made goes a LONG
way in being able to discern what's what. So is being able to use our own critical thinking skills when presented with any new information, data, "studies" or results of any kind, in my opinion.
I am smoker and I went through a promiscuous phase when I was younger. Are the two behavior related? Don't know. My sister smokes and she never went through a promiscuous phase. A girl I know is VERY promiscuous and has never smoked a day in her life.
And before anyone accuses me of simply being defensive and wanting to advertise myself as "pure" for wanting to at least respectfully question this "data" or statistic, I would suggest that they reread the first sentence of the paragraph preceeding
this one:)

CDC or NCHS or BRSS or other sources do not have a "promiscuity" question. Promiscuity is derived from a common variable in most all CDC data sets and it's a variable called "Number of Lifetime Sex Partners". So I went to National Center for Health Statistics (division of CDC) and downloaded their NCHS. Including sexual behavior, alcohol, smoking and other survey modules.
Total Sample is N = 7,781.
RESULTS:
1. MEN who smoke: Average 27.011 lifetime sex partners.
2. Women who smoke: Average 13.604 lifetime sex partners.
T-Test asks if the average number of lifetime sex partners is statistically different between men and women.
3. Results: Very significant (p = < 0.00001)
4. Results: Men who smoke have a significantly higher number of lifetime sex partners.
Now I wanted to know what happens when both men and women smoke and drink alcohol. Seems to be a reasonable assumption. Alcohol would seem to influence promiscuity more than smoking.
RESULTS:
More than 3 drinks per day and smoke:
5. MEN: Average lifetime sex partners: 28.391
6. WOMEN: Average lifetime sex partners: 16.511
More than 3 drinks per day and smoke:
7. MEN: Average lifetime sex partners: 27.881
8. WOMEN: Average lifetime sex partners: 12.01
More than 4 drinks per day and smoke:
9. MEN: Average lifetime sex partners: 27.873
10. WOMEN: Average lifetime sex partners: 11.890
More than 5 drinks per day and smoke:
11. MEN: Average lifetime sex partners: 25.986
12. WOMEN: Average lifetime sex partners: 13.103
More than 9 drinks per day and smoke:
13. MEN: Average lifetime sex partners: 31.495
14. WOMEN: Average lifetime sex partners: 10.273
BOTTOM LINE:
15. MEN NOT WOMEN are far more likely to be promiscuous when they smoke and
even more promiscuous when their level daily drinking increases.
16. WOMEN tend to decrease the number of sex partners as their daily alcohol consumption increases.
I think this says that women once again are victimized by males who succumb to "illusory correlations". They would like it to be true so they practice self-fulfilling prophesies with no evidence. Pretty sad. | |

I think this is probably a better way to put it, but the original poster still made a fallacious argument on the basis of statistics. One needs to be very careful when using statistics not to simply use them to confirm what one already believes to be true, but rather to listen to whether the scientific evidence supports or does not support the underlying idea in an objective sense. | |

Also, the admin who made the original post used statistics from THIS site, so the sample is skewed to represent mostly single people belonging to a dating site. His conclusion may not be accurate because of that bias. | |

But by the stats that you have presented, unless I am missing something, it seems to me that the percentage of smokers is slightly higher in married women versus divorced and separated women and the only piece of data you are singling out is the percentage of women who are "living together" with a significant other/roommate. We can only assume that the high percentage of women who smoke selected "living together" are also promiscuous, however there is nothing in the data you presented that ties together the topics of smoking and promiscuity. And also- where did you get that women who smoke are more likely to cheat? Another random assumption without proof. I mean, I don't smoke and I don't understand the point of it, but I'm not about to just assume that a girl who smokes is promiscuous. Maybe you didn't mean to be steriotypical, but that is how it comes across. And another thing, buddy, why are you only singling out women? Men cheat and smoke and live with their significant others and girlfriends. Men are promiscuous too. And sometimes it has nothing to do with smoking or "living together". | |
