It was also true (mostly) that the evil or dishonest man was the one with the cigar. Back in my house party days before I was 21, nearly every girl there smoked, and i'm not saying that going to a house party makes a girl easy, but it sure wasn't difficult either! Also fascinating to read how many fishies feel compelled to dispute them with their personal biographical info (eg. I smoke, I'm not promiscuous, therefore the statistics aren't accurate or interpreted properly). Some fishies doth protest too much, methinks.
But mainly, I'm sad my smoking friends feel attacked (the OP wasn't, imho) or needing to be defensive. This habit is a tender wound in the lives of many friends because of the negative public sentiment so freely expressed...one of our last "safe" prejudices; and for many - because they've tried to quit and failed. (That's just my observation, I'm NOT trying to discredit anyone who smokes for any reason).
Smoke 'em if you brung 'em. Your impulses are yours, and those you control or indulge, are your choice. Now I'm going to ponder whether Christmas is the least promiscuous day of the year (with some banana cream pie and rum nog in my coffee).

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries women who smoked were always thought of as being more promiscuous. In the mining brothels women were always shown smoking many of them smoked cigars
In film industry they always have the sexy vixen smoking
In hospitality the smoking section is always the most fun and they tip better.
I find that smokers in general are less inhibited, drink more, live a little harder then non smokers. There was a thread recently about how nurses are promiscuous oddly enough many nurses and doctors are smokers. | |

Posted: 12/25/2007 12:01:04 PM | I'm interested in this, but find that I lack a definition of promiscuity that I'm confident of being able to conform to....
I bring this up because as someone who reallly enjoys the occasional cigarette, I want to make sure I'm being promiscuous correctly.
So, for example, does promiscuity equate to being sexually active but not in a monogomous relationship? And if so, does being sexually active only some of the time qualify me?
Or is promiscuity simply a byproduct of infidelity--does one have to be married/living together and seeking an Intimate Encounter or similar on the outside in order to be promiscuous? Because I don't think that's fair.
Or does promiscuity only kick in after a woman has had a certain number of sex partners? And if so, is this calcuated based on yearly tallies or numbers accumulated over a lifetime?
So....if a woman has had twenty partners in her lifetime, does that make her promiscuous? And if so, at what point did she become promiscuous? Age 20? Age 40? Age 50? Does it affect her achievement of promiscuity if she spent much of that time married but still has had 20 lovers? How about the woman with three lovers who cheated on her husband as compared to the woman with twenty lovers who has never cheated on anyone.... Does one have to cheat on someone to qualify as promiscuous?
And....I'm really interested in knowing the answer to this question....
If a woman smokes until she's say...age 40, but then she quits... Is her "promiscuity" determined based on the number of men she slept with BEFORE quitting....or after? Can one still be promiscuous if one quits smoking? Can it just be taken away like that?

nonsense assumptions ~ you can't tell what a 100 people will d0 with X ~ where did you get these 100 people? How did you come up with X? ~ Who's paying the freight on this project ~ who got them their cushy little jobs ~ or grant block? Who's future hangs in the balance?~ who's sticking their neck out? who stand to be embrassed by certain results. ~ we all know the world is flat! ~ so whats this you say to me? It's heresy you speak! I will see you in irons! and forced to drink hemlock.
This all requires double blinded studies by pure academiaians~ and still the very act of observing, you have jaded the results. It's hard to find pure anymore ~
There is a place for such thinking ~ but it's not a "one size fits all" ~ or cure-all to fore-see the unknown and offer it up as "the voice from the burning bush" ~dar | |

Posted: 12/25/2007 1:04:56 PM | Just looking at the stats in the OP, and noticing that overall, the average number of all woman, on this site, who smoke, is much higher than the average number of adults who smoke.
I wonder if a common bond between smoking, and being on a dating site is: common sense, and judgement? or rather: lack of ? I'm sure there's a few who will get very offended by this post
I think that it's safe to say that among all of us, who are on a dating site, there's a considerable number of people who are here, due to a lack of common sense, or lack of good judgement. Many of us are on a dating site and looking because we've made bad judgements, which seemed to lack common sense, in the past.
The people who have used sensible judgements, may be content and happy in their relationships. But the people who have shown tendencies to use less sensible judgement, may be more likely to be single, or several times divorced, or in an unhappy relationship. As a result, when they're in their 30s 40s or 50s, they're on a dating site still looking.
This doesn't apply to everyone here. But I'm sure it applies to many.
Chosing to smoke, in my humble opinion, is also a very unsensible decision.
(I'm certain that I'm gonna piss off all the smokers on this site now)
In this decade, (unlike 60 years ago) there is very over-whelming, conclusive medical and scientific evidence that smoking is a major contributer to increasing the risk of serious medical problems.
I've seen terminally ill cancer patients suffer. ...and in my opinion, chosing to continue an activity that offers nothing possitive in return, but vastly increases your odds of one-day having such a serious illness, may show a similar lack of sensible judgement.
The people with the best ability to use common sense and good judgement, aren't on these sites, because they're able to find, and maintain, healthy relationships;
and they're also not destroying their bodies with a pointless addiction. | |

A survey found that about 60-70% of women who smoked reported that they had at least 4 partners in the last 6 months, while around 60-70% of women who were non-smokers reported they had 1 or 0 partners in the same time period.
However, given that there are 15 million people in Canada, 60 million people in the UK, 300 million people in the USA, every woman on POF could be promiscuous non-smoking women or smoking virgin woman, and there would still be more than enough people within the categories of the statistic for it to still be valid. But if there were about 3 million smoking women who were all virgins in Canada, that would break the statistic for sure. Can anyone find 3 million women in Canada who smoke and are virgins?
But heck, I'm a smoker. I'd like to date a smoker at least once. Every woman I've gone out with didn't smoke. | |

Consider this -
It’s probably a safe bet that among drivers who are involved in fatal accidents, the overwhelming majority of them have drivers’ licenses. Should I therefore be worried that legally licensed drivers are more likely to kill me? Should we start a movement to ban licensed drivers from our public roadways?
Instead of saying that smoking women (and I’m not talking about “hot babes” or women who only smoke when they burst into flames) "are far more promiscuous", perhaps one should explore the possibility that women who are less conservative in risk-aversion are more likely to take a chance on being more promiscuous or to smoke (spontaneous combustion events not included).
To me, the latter seems more plausible.

Statistics like that are always fun.
We could also say that at least 80% of people who are promiscuous also drive a car. And, I bet that over 60% of them eat pizza. I’d be willing to bet that at least 60% of them use alcohol, too.
It gets even better, though. Do you know that at least 80% of promiscuous people eat meat at least twice a week? Also, 100% of them drink liquids.
The OP makes a point, but we’ll have to validate it with other types of information. Being an experienced researcher, perhaps I should volunteer to interview a couple dozen of these promiscuous women and try to discover yet another piece of common data.
