| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 12/26/2007 12:52:28 PM | I'm taking one of these for nerve pain. It's the most effective drug I've ever had for it, and it doesn't turn me into a zombie.
My own thought is that as a society, if not a species, we're terrible at dealing with stress, never mind alleviating it. My mother's parents and grandparents drank heavily to cope with their dreadful marriage.
My mother takes SSRIs, which I think are an improvement over alcohol, but it takes some serious work to to learn to even identify those core problems, much less deal with them, and I know she won't do it. The behaviors that drive the depression are things she believes she needs to do in order to be a good person, so she won't stop doing them. At some point in the future, she will probably commit suicide. Her ability to justify her existence is breaking down, drugs or no drugs, as aging further complicates her ability to live within her own moral structures, and she's running out of drugs. SSRIs only work for a few years, at least on depression, and she's already gone through most of them.
No drug, by itself, can dismantle a self-destructive belief system. These things can improve certain aspects of brain function, but they cannot create any other change without some kind of psychological effort accompanying them. They are a support therapy, not a cure. It's been a lesson to me. I'm amoral by my mother's standards, but a lot happier overall.
My SSRI dose is below what's considered therapeutic for depression, but I can say this: they don't change your personality. They change your mood a bit, sometimes in unexpected ways, but overall I like the change. Then again, it may just be the pain relief that's making me feel better. Chronic pain doesn't help one's state of mind much.

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 12/26/2007 1:09:49 PM | | Easy for you to say "put the bottle down and get on with it" so to speak, I have lost my only true friend recently, my dear mum, I am a single parent (got divorced this year also) and it is very difficult to get out there and not be isolated when I have to stay in for my son. I am on the verge of going to the doctors and getting some happy pills as my mood is ever decreasing and I do not feel I want to carry on with this crap life - If it was not for my son I would have topped myself ages ago. He is the only thing that keeps me here and I am very lonely. Hence joining this site, hoping to meet a nice man - even then, not sure that there is such a thing.. | |

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 12/26/2007 1:18:57 PM | ambien is a sleeping pill......
And we all lose people.... parents, children, loved ones. We all go through divorces, break up and lay offs....... PILLS arent going to bring any of them back, pills won't fix your marriages and pills certainly won't get anyone hired.
and as I mentioned.... those are not reasons to take pills..... they arent disease's. They are an easy way out to make YOU feel better without dealing with reality.
Again... mo. | |

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 12/26/2007 1:21:12 PM | Well I'm not, and I guess I must be the only one. LOL I sounds like a physical addiction to me. I've worked at a homeless shelter for the last 14 years. I'm not saying you don't have reason to be on them but these drug companies only make money if you keep taking their drugs so there's incentive to make them addicting. I don't trust drug companies and I tend to use things that are herbal and can't be patented for big profits. Mark | |

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 12/26/2007 1:25:45 PM | Hi:
There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking antidepressants. It is a medical condition. Not enough seratonin to your brain. Do not feel guilty about taking them, because a lot of people do not understand this condition. If it makes your life a little bit easier, than so be it. It is better than drinking.
I have been on them for 2 years. It just makes life a little bit easier to handle at times. Some people drink, some smoke drugs. I think our way is a good way. Life can be hard sometimes, and and this just smooths the rough edges.
Take care.

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 12/26/2007 1:26:06 PM | Dear Woman of Substance.
From a tantric perspective, our bodies hold our memories cellularly, until we release or somehow transmute and heal them.
Anti depressants are like a band-aid...Take the band-aid off and the wound is still there...Until we heal it.
You may think, well, I'll just use the band-aid until the pain goes away....but the subconscious pain can erode the mental, spiritual, emotional and physical body..all the way to giving us cancer, or some other symptom of a compromised immune system. And sometimes, that pain follows us right to the grave and maybe beyond.
Everyone carries pain...just watch the evening news...on any night..if you want confirmation of that.
I feel that we are all entitled to learn better ways to deal with the pain of our existence than to pop a pill...which does little in the long run to alleviate our distress.
I'm so sorry about your sisters....and your mom and dad.
I too, have had many devastating losses...Who alive hasn't....?And I barely take an Advil. You can get free of this chemical dependency...if and whenever you choose to, javascript:smilie(' ') I hope you reach out somewhere and deeply heal your grief.
Blessings and namaste

You have to talk about your loss and you will know when you are ready to go off the pills. I know some people use some herbal supplements for a while after they quit antidepressants but they are much softer.....

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 12/26/2007 2:37:09 PM | Hey~ I haven't taken the time to read all of the responses yet, to your question, womanofsubstance, but I thought I should weigh in, as this is something I know a little about. I used to take anti depressants, but I hated the way that most of them "tunnel" you in. As well as curing you of your lows, you also have no highs. As a writer and musician, they robbed me of my creativity and left me in a functional, robotic state. They also robbed me of my sexual functions! I hated them and took my chances without them.
Now, I mention in my profile that I take a lot of herbs. I take no regular prescription meds whatsoever. If I have a cold/flu, or my back goes out, then yes, I'll take them, along with herbs and then flush the meds out a.s.a.p. The trouble with prescription meds is that while they are making you feel better, they are killing your organs, big time! There are several herbs you can take for depression. I take Holy Basil and also a formula called Stress Advantage. I use the brand New Chapter for both of these products and they can be had on vitacost.com if you can't find them at your local health food store. Some people have great luck with St. John's Wort. The thing to remember with herbs is that they take awhile to get into yoru system and start helping you, unlike most western medicine, which is instant gratification...with a price.
I used to have two baskets of prescription pills in my kitchen cupboard and took at least ten different prescrips every day, the rest were as needed. I went herbal two years ago and never looked back. If I would have known then what I know now about prescription drugs, I would have had to have another anti-depressant/nerve pill to calm me down over what I was putting into my body. Now all I put into my body is food~ herbs that we were supposed to eat when we were feeling bad. Great deal, huh?
Oh, the depression thing! Now I get sad when I'm supposed to get sad, happy when I am supposed to get happy, ecstatically sometimes, and I very rarely get depressed. In the event that I do, I recognize it, maybe drink some uplifiting tea or something and I can manage it until it goes away.
I hope this helps you and you may write me if you have any questions!
Peace, Love & Music!

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 12/26/2007 3:12:01 PM | | I went on Prozac at a very low dose for one year a few years ago. I hate anti-depressants because I think they mask what you actually have to do in order to get truly better. I had to go under a psychiatrist for that year (I had an anxiety disorder) and they wanted to up the dose but I refused. I'm fine now - it's OK to use them as a tool but you know, the real answer is to work with those painful feelings until they're processed. For that you need counselling/therapy. | |

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 12/26/2007 4:35:41 PM | How sad that even today people think like this.....we need to come out of the dark ages when mental disease was a stigma,,I am not talking about becoming depressed because something has happened in your life,,everyone becomes depressed at one time or another, its a normal part of life,,,the problem comes when the depression does not stop over time, or nothing has happened in your life to bring it on...if you was told you had a disease like cancer, but if you take this medication you will be ok and lead a normal life, no one here would hesitiate to take it,,but because depression has to do with the mind, somehow that makes it different, depression, bi-polar, etc is not all in the mind,,it is an actual disease dealing with a chemical imbalance in a certain part of the brain,,,,those of you who don't have it HURRAYY!!!!, depending on the severity of it depends if you need medication or not,,,one visit to the doctor does not diagnose clinical depression...it takes some testing, some homework on the way you feel and when, etc....please stop talking about mental disease as if it doesn't exist, it exist and its real...as a nurse I have seen many people who where at risk for suicide or hurting others take medication and live a normal life..also saw people who didn't need medication just needed someone to talk too take medication for nothing,,,its not a perfect world out there, everyone is different and handles problems in life differently, it doesn't make them weaker actually it makes them smarter from the ones that think they have no problems and cause havoc in other people's lives...anyone out there who has severe depression for 6 months or longer, cannot handle everyday situations, cries for no reason and feels they need help,,,seek a good doctor and consider yourself STRONG, at least you want to help yourself......
