| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 8/17/2008 7:44:11 AM | I don't understand how so many people don't seem to be aware that there is a need for antidepressants in many situations. Medical information is so prevalent, how can you dispute the God send antidepressants have been for so many who have a REAL need and can be helped by them.
And yes, I also believe they are being misused and 'pushed' by many doctors, my own included. He and I got into quite a loud argument one day when he declared there was nothing wrong with me, that I was simply a lonely, middle-aged, single woman and needed to take antidepressants. I hit the ceiling when he said that. I was depressed, hell I'd been sick for months and wanted my life back! But I also had a myraid of other symtoms and I insisted he run more tests-he insisted I take the script. I never filled it and was called to come back in two days later as the "worthless" test results showed I really was sick. I really enjoyed handing him back his script. He wanted me to take them one other time when I mentioned I was dealing with a lot of problems at work and home, even though I wasn't anywhere near clinicly depressed, just frustrated. I also never mention the word stress around him as I learned he has another pill for that lol.
But because one situation doesn't call for them doesn't mean every situation doesn't.

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 8/26/2008 3:12:00 PM | | Hi, most people in this country are drug attics in one form or another. Sodas, coffee, alcohol, prescription drugs, street drugs. And guess what you can also be addicted to your own body chemistry; Endorphins, adrenaline, and so on. There are people who are addicted to relationships, going from one to another. The thinking is “When I meet the right one, I will be right” never happen. Become right, then you will meet right. | |

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 8/27/2008 12:41:49 PM | I am 55 and have never taken antidepressants--never felt the need to do so. Of all the people I know well, only 3 have taken anything and for 2 of them it was for a temporary situation such as the very sudden death of a parent or a devastating divorce. Both are in their upper 50s and haven't taken anything for more than a year or so of their lives--just took something to tide them over for a bit.
One said it was wonderful and she had no problem weaning herself off of it when it was time. The other said it only took the edge off and when he quit he still felt all of his problems and had to deal with them then. Said it just delayed his feeling them rather than 'helping'. He had no trouble weaning himself off them however.
The third has been on antidepressants for many, many years. She is one who could not 'survive' without it. I only saw her once when she had forgotten to make her appt. for a refill and wasn't on them for 2 days and will never forget it! She was a completely different person--scary to be honest. When she is on her meds she is wonderful! Acts wonderful, fun to be with, etc.
I do believe they are a lifesaver for many people. For others it doesn't really do much of anything--no matter which one they take. Both of those who needed it temporarily went through most before either finding one that worked or deciding none of them did the job.

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 8/27/2008 11:04:48 PM | Yep, everyone! Ok, I don't know, but many are.
So what if you use an antidepressant. I use one and feel perfectly fine. I don't mind saying either. People will recognize and accept any other part of the body getting awry, but when it comes to the brain, many are quick to exclaim that it's all about how you think and mind over matter. Sometimes, the brain just changes for various reasons and a medication can rectify it for some. 1 in 4 people will try an AD in their lifetime...25% is quite a large number of people.
When people age, thinks don't work in the body the way they used to. Sometimes, for example, sleep can become short or troubled, with frequent awakenings. This is especially true for senior citizens. I need reading glasses now darn it!

I do not want to push religion, my thought is whatever gets a person thru the night but Buddhism and reconizing my suffering helped.... but it takes longer than one night.
Your mind will go into places it doesnt want to go.

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 9/2/2008 1:10:49 AM | | Not everyone takes them!!!! I have never taken them, never will. I have had a few emotional rough times and been suggested I do take them (normal stuff, to much homework, met a liar and moved for him, bills are due, things we need to face every day as adults, blah blah blah ) but I have found for me overall, a good workout, ride my horse or concentrate on other things, has been the "cure all". I know way to many people addicted to those kind of things...not to mention for me, I just cringe at putting chemicals in my body. I suppose they do help some people, and I have found in studies in some of my Psychology classes that they are recommended more than they should be. If they work for some people, that is great. The only thing I wish the ADA would come up with is a pill some people could take to make them stop lying. I know a guy I met on here that could use a few years worth...lol. If they came up with a pill like that, I bet a lot of society would not need anti depressants. To sum this up~ if they are working for some of you, that is great. I am just for myself all about all other options first. We all have our thoughts and views in things. I have close friends on them. For some they work, for others I see it as a pure addiction. | |

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 9/2/2008 9:43:40 AM | I don't take them.
I get depressed sometimes, but it is because I am in a situation that I do not want to be in. I just change/correct/improve the situation.
It's pretty simple really.

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 9/2/2008 9:59:51 AM | Well I feel great all the time and alway have. I don't need any drugs and yet I've had a fair share of tragedy in my own life.
A little rain will fall in all lives, and how you choose to deal with it will determine just how happy you are. You might remember that we all are going to die and however long anyone lives is a lifetime.
You've created your own nitemare and you'll have to dig yourself out of it. I wouldn't recommend a psychiatrist because their role is treating mental illnesses with drugs. What you need is the help of a psychologist who is experienced dealing with grief, stress, and depression.

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 9/2/2008 10:34:56 AM | No, i'm not 30+ but i'd like to put my 2 cents in.
First off you have to realize there are different situations for using them. Some people have a chemical imbalance and therefore need to take prescribed medication everyday. There are others who have had traumatic things happen to them and might never be the same person again but are more suited to taking them for periods of time. These people should not be judged for having to take something that makes them feel normal. However the drugs are really more suited towards people that have the chemical imbalance because it takes usually a week for said drug to really kick in. Sadly most of the people in real need of prescribed medication turn to street drugs that only work temporarily. Peoples brains work differently on drugs. Why are some people happy when drinking alcohol, and others violent? Brain chemistry.
I think anybody who is prescribed to them at the age of 30 or later more then likely needs to vent to a therapist instead of relying on the drugs that are readily available. Yes it does seem like everybody is on them, and if they aren't then they've got some other vice that makes them happy. After all it is America where the "pursuit of happiness" usually ends in a bad decision.

| is everyone over 30 taking antidepressants? Posted: 9/2/2008 1:10:41 PM | Not on them and never have been. I've had leukemia, a child who is autistic, a husband with cancer, lost a business, got divorced etc.,
I'm an upbeat, strong and positive person.
I haven't ever even considered medication to get me through the things in life I have faced.
And I don't think I would.
