| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/7/2008 10:19:18 AM | I have to say that I am not such a fan of the current movie soundtracks, but one of the all-time BEST soundtracks was the movie, "The Big Chill." I remember listening to that music in my car during that time over and over and over and over again. I still love those songs even if they are considered antiquated. What do you want from me? I STILL have to put up with a teenager who likes to command the radio in my car from time to time. Oh well...some of the music that is put on the radio is kind of cool and has good rhythm to it. | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/8/2008 12:02:53 AM | Vision accompanied by sound is certainly a lot more potent than just vision on its own , and has become such an exact science these days , and as im a musician / sound engineer , its something i pay quite close attention to.
A soundtrack that really exemplifies how potent a combination they can have , is One Hor Photo , starring Robin Williams in a very unusual role as a very normal photo clerk who becomes over-involved with a family through the photos he processes for them , to the point of becoming a stalker. I cant imagine the sound without the vision , or vice-versa , because they are both so interlinked. Bloody stunning film if you havent seen it.
Some of my favourite soundtrack composers are Vangelis , Hans Zimmer , phillip Glass , and John Williams ( who could forget the soundtrack to ET ? )
Another strange phenomenon is when a directoe / producer just gets a raft of his favourite songs and sticks 'em in a file. Quentin Tarentino does this all the time -- Pulp fiction , kill bill 1 & 2 , resorvoir dogs , but it seems to work because he has such cool taste in music.

Totally agree with you. I talked about that before in my post but man that was really something and I was only 10 at the time.

| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/9/2008 3:56:47 PM | | I personally enjoy film scores. I tend to notice them during the movie, and then look into them after, to buy or download. Some can really tell the story and emotion of the film. As for soundtracks though, I tend to find the songs I most enjoyed in the film are not included in the OST. | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/18/2008 5:24:46 PM | I don't think there's any doubt that a good soundtrack enhance the movie experience. But a good soundtrack can't save a movie. Ex: dare devil.
Here are some of my favourite soundtracks that mash well with the movie are:
The Empire record. The Virgin Suicides Lost In Translation The Bourne Identity Juno
|
| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/18/2008 11:47:41 PM | | lostwords... I just purchased "Juno" myself... LOVE it... and I think they did an excellent job capturing music that enhances/compliments the movie itself. | |
|
| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/19/2008 7:45:36 AM | Another of my all time favorites as far as movie soundtracks is Woodstock. Now THAT is an influential soundtrack!
There's also some great tunes on the "Desperado" movie (Antonio Banderas) soundtrack featuring all sorts of killer guitar from past & present players.
|
| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/20/2008 4:07:46 AM | Movie scores are much more memorable to me than just a list of songs grouped together for a soundtrack. And add so much to the impact of a film.
Movies like Thief, Gattaca, Ravenous, Psycho, Jaws and the Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings trilogies would have been so much less emotional and memorable if their scores had been any less perfect than they are.
The westerns of Sergio Leone, the action/thrillers of John Carpenter, the horror films of Dario Argento are even more examples of the importance of great scores.
These are all also some of my favorites off the top of my head...
|
| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/20/2008 9:43:31 PM | I like a lot of scores from Italian horror films...
Stuff like Goblin, Nico Fidenco, Fabio Frizzi, Riz Ortalani, Ennio Morricone, etc...
|
| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/21/2008 5:57:42 AM | I'd have to go with the Garden State sound track - really introduced me to a lot of great bands that I might not have otherwise discovered (The Shins namely) and I think the music makes the movie but the movie also makes the music - that's a sign of one being just as strong as the other.
Also loved Lost In Translation, Almost Famous, The Crow and Brokeback Mountain soundtracks. Haven't managed to find one for This Is England but that also contains some great music.
|
| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/25/2008 2:02:15 AM | What about The Wizard of Oz?
I agree with the poster who explained why the classic soundtrack movies like Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Dirty Dancing are movies where the music fit so well that listening to songs takes you right to particular scenes/movie moments.
The Graduate is another favorite.

" I adore the work Michael Kamen did for the amazing mini-series "Band of Brothers". "
Good catch! I forgot he did that one, too.
Also... forgot to mention "Ben Hur" (Miklos Rozsa). One of the all-time best.

| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/26/2008 9:08:38 PM | What do you think of movie soundtracks these days? these days? as opposed to eras gone by? two totally different animals, but both achieve the same result - the enhancement of living within the movie
The use of music to enhance mood in movies is pretty much taken as a given. A screener with inappropriate background music had better be marketed as a comedy or scrapped (imagine "flight of the bumblebee" playing during the ship sinking scene in Titanic). I can't think of many, if any instances where there is a blatant misfire of music choice, IMO, either it just gets lost or really enhances the scene/movie
But can merely mediocre movies be magnified to massive multimedia again, I can't think of an instance, other than if the movie actually relied and based it's premise around the music - I'm not a fan of musicals for the majority, but if the movie is marketed as a musical, with few exceptions, the plot is crap anyway, the score takes precedence and carries the film.
It's a matter of personal preference whether one believes the truly mediocre film is elevated or not based on the music, a bad film will always be a bad film regardless of the score. I don't think I've ever been in a conversation when someone has mentioned the movie was crap, but "hey the music was great"
On the playlist right now - the soundtrack of Atonement which inspired this thread. try sound tracks from Black Hawk Down, Inside Man, Man on Fire, Gladiator, Collateral, Trainspotting, Vanilla Sky - you'll be awoken to artists that I bet you wouldn't normally have spinning ... or maybe you would?

| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/27/2008 3:30:49 PM | | the only movie to come out recently with a soundtrack worth taking note of, strictly in my opinion of course, is tenacious d in the pick of destiny. | |

Oh they did a great one for a foreign film, a movie about trucking dynamite through the mountains, which has a foreign title I can't remember. I just tried to find it and realize netflix does not have them listed as a hyperlink as to who did the soundtrack.
It's a 1953 French movie , called "Le salaire de la peur" (The Wages of Fear ), by Henri-Georges Clouzot.
Great film, and it was redone by William Friedkin as "Sorcerer" - in 1977.
On topic, soundtrack collections can be a good find, as they bring together music from different artists. Just look at "The Big Chill" soundtrack , and what it offers :

| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/27/2008 8:50:15 PM | The Godfather part 3. Undoubtedly the worst of the three. Overall not a great movie... pretty good but not as good as the others BUT in the final scene as they are walking out of the opera - GOLD. Perfect piece. Perfect. I've never cried to a movie but that was definately one of the saddest scenes i've ever seen.
Another surprising soundtrack recently was the trailer for a videogame. I can't remember the game but the song playing was by Gary Jules - Mad World. That commercial was great.
|
| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/27/2008 9:44:38 PM | | The Soundtrack to Garden State is one of my favorites. Few songs from others but not the whole soundtrack is good I find. But Garden State was very good. | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 1/29/2008 12:08:19 AM | I love Saturday Night Fever's soundtrack. If I could find it on CD, I would buy it and listen to it now. Very upbeat and good for the treadmill run. | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 2/1/2008 2:02:21 PM | | I think the primary judgement of whether a sound track is good or not is how much it enhances the meaning of the movie. One of my favorites (which is a compilation) is When Harry Met Sally--lots of old favorites that added meaning to the story line. One of the most interesting I heard recently was the Juno sound track. I can't say I loved it, but it really had a way of punctuating the film. | |

Good from beginning to end soundtracks

The game in question would be Gears of War, and I'm glad that someone brought up the video game end of the spectrum as well. If you're not a gamer it's understandable that none of this will matter to you, but if you look at some of the franchises today, most notably Halo, and you listen to the instrumentals at the beginning, through the cut scenes, at the end, and just through the game in general, they're all so uplifiting and they get your blood pumping. Case in point, at the beginning of Halo 3 you see MC fall from the sky and crash on to the planet, just the score that plays there just gives you a feeling of dread that he may not be alive, but then it comes back in different tones and just wow.......I just can't get over how good it is. Other notable games with good scores would be Bioshock, and Mass Effect, honestly if you haven't heard them try to find them.......They're all utterly amazing.
But as far as movie soundtracks go, I'd have to say that one of my favourites would be Old School. Who can honestly say that they haven't been driving down the road and all of a sudden "Master of Puppets" will come on and they don't just have the urge to floor the pedal and fly past everyone, cause I get that urge every time I hear it :D
|
| movie soundtracks Posted: 2/7/2008 12:46:23 AM | | A lot of the music used in movies, and especially in TV spots and trailers, is actually performed by the band "Globus". I'd highly recommend checking them out. :) | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 2/8/2008 6:32:26 AM | I think a soundtrack can make or break a film - a great soundtrack can make for a great film if done correctly and there are a lot of great producers and directors who know this.
I was watching an old 'Sex and the City' last night and they played 'Moon River' - the playing of this song at a particular moment in the show gave the scene more emotion and conveyed a depth of feeling between the characters without them saying a word while they were dancing. It took me back to Breakfast at Tiffanys where I first heard the song and have loved it ever since - in my book one of the best songs ever written and who doesnt think of the film when they hear that song? !!!
Interesting thread guys.
