Michael Small's work during '70's flicks like "Parallax View", "Klute" and "Marathon Man". "To Kill A Mockingbird", always a good listen.

My 3 favourite movie soundtracks would probably be: A Beautiful Mind, A Good Year, and Garden State.

if my favourite film composer is Morricone. my favourite film soundtrack is Raising Arizona. A very particular thing about this soundtrack is the fact that it contains only two songs (i think, somebody correct me if i'm wrong...), played in many different ways throughout the film. one of the song is Beethoven's 9th being played bluegrass style! Pure genious.
In one of the funniest scenes ever filmed (the diaper robbery), the song starts with the chase when Hi tries to escape the police in banjo styoe and when he enters the grocery store (that's a different one from the robbery), the track is played muzac style. there;s quite a few scenes in that brilliant film where the song is being played or sung from the previous scene into the next one into such a complete different style, that you would have never suspected to be the same track!
The Coen Bros film soundtracks are very particular. and their last one, No Country for Old Men is no exception. It's a fantastic soundtrack in a sense that... there's absolutely no music throughout the film. just sqweekie noises from doors and stairs that contribute to a a much scarier picture than cheap and predictable "horror" soundtrack...
Sometimes, the best and efficient soundtracks is not to have any!
As a result, No Country For Old men won best picture at the Oscar... and best Soundtrack OLL

| movie soundtracks Posted: 4/23/2008 11:53:04 AM | | I just bought the soundtrack to the film "Once." Never seen the film, never heard of the singers in the movie. But it's a great soundtrack. I bought it on a whim because I heard the song "Falling Slowly" over and over again and really liked it. I'm glad I did--it's really good stuff. Very simple and folksy. | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 4/24/2008 11:24:56 AM | I think Forrest Gump had a really good Soundtrack. The music really fit the time period of the movie.
Sling Blade had a good soundtrack too...Daniel Lanois did a great job.

| movie soundtracks Posted: 4/26/2008 9:26:46 AM | Tarantino's pictures never really had 100% original soundtracks, but i really like they way he chooses music for his scenes. it changes its dynamics completely. I would like to see Morricone compose an entire soundtrack of new material for QT's next film... before Ennio goes away
Pulp Fiction's soundtrack is awesome. My favourites: Son of a Preacher Man, The famous Intro (that was in the 1950's, waayyy ahead of its time), the hilarious Captain Flowers on the Wall, the boogie-woogie You Never can't tell by Chuck Berry and of course the oh-so moody romantic Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon by Urge Overkill.
Jackie Brown is another one that's really great. I love Pam Grier I really wish we would see her more often in movies...

| movie soundtracks Posted: 4/26/2008 11:53:18 AM | Just watched 'Juno' the other night and gotta say, I love that soundtrack!
My daughter does, too. All the songs are very quirky and original. Guess this means I'll be spending some hard earned $ soon.
Another soundtrack which I loved and purchased was for the movie "The Big Easy".....New Orleans sound....though not too sure of the track of Dennis Quaid singing?

| movie soundtracks Posted: 5/5/2008 7:01:41 AM | | One of my favorite examples of soundtrack music is in the film "Off Limits". Willem Dafoe and Gregory Hines are driving through Saigon and the song "Pretty Ballerina" by The Left Banke is playing. | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 5/5/2008 7:19:05 AM | | I think one of the best soundtrack composers lately is Clint Mansell. The work he produced for Requiem for a dream, Pi and The Fountain are astounding. The success of the requiem theme is just amazing. The amount of people who use it now, and the fact he reworked it for the LOTR Two Towers trailer too, making it even more powerful. He's definitely one of my favourites along with Thomas Newman. | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 5/5/2008 7:57:33 AM | | i heard the trainspotting soundtrack a little bit ago. hadnt listened to it in ages. but as i heard it, i thought it, and the movie overall, would have been less memorable had they not used iggy pop's "lust for life". the music director must have been brilliant. | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 5/6/2008 10:20:32 PM | | Well, not sure how recent you want to get, but movies like Pulp Fiction have a really good soundtrack, as does The Karate Kid, The Highlander, and Terminator I and II. I hear Iron Man got some pretty good reviews, and though I haven't seen it yet, since I also think that sound is very important and because of its good reviews, I believe that when I do see (and hear) it that will be evidence to me that the art of syncing good music to appropriate moments on the silver screen is not yet dead. 'Nuff said! | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 5/6/2008 10:30:25 PM | Iron Man backtracks were GOOOOOD! The movie was pretty good, too. Extraodinarily dry, but good. | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 5/7/2008 6:46:50 PM | Hello...I think some soundtracks added to current movie are picked by popularity rather than picking the song because of feelings or words. My favorite soundtrack is from the movie August Rush. I believe they did a great job on the music...if you want to hear one of the songs,I have a link on my profile with the lyrics... | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 5/7/2008 7:53:52 PM | The Soundtrack to the movie Wonderland is my favorite , that music went with that movie perfect! Opening Credits were Bad Company's"Shooting Star " and filled with a lot of the great 70's songs... Blow had an excellent soundtrack The Devils Rejects was cool too even tho I'll never listen to "Free Bird" in the same light again ! The Doors Movie Soundtrack was awesome too that was my favorite growing up and a big reason why I got into the Doors music at such a young age , Probably my saving grace from not falling into the mainstream trap. I also remember a movie when I was younger called Trick or Treat , I wore out that Soundtrack lol...I couldn't name 2 songs on it today but I know I loved it. Decline Of the western Civilization ~The Metal Years .....wasn't really a movie it was a documentary but that soundtrack was another I wore out | |

But something I have been thinking about recently for those of you who have seen it, but in There Will Be Blood, I found the soundtrack extremely obnoxious and distracting!
I agree wholeheartedly! I hated that soundtrack! It was awful. Absolutely awful.
I'm a big Thomas Newman fan. The soundtracks to The Shawshank Redemption and Road to Perdition get regular play here. I agree with the others who thought that Michael Kamen's work on Band of Brothers was great. What an amazing series.

| movie soundtracks Posted: 5/10/2008 12:15:40 PM | I think some movie soundtracks are simply phenominal (and I've got "Atonement" in my iPod)
Some other greats (which include not just score, but songs) are;
Gladiator - Hans Zimmer (with a little help of Enya and Lisa Gerrard) who is a musical genius... Love Actually - Some score and some very appropriate songs Unfaithful by ? Thin Red Line - Hans again Pirates of the Caribbean - HZ et al... Band of Brothers - Michael Kamen Medicine Man - Jerry Goldsmith, I think?....can't remember. Dances with Wolves - John Barry Ladder 49 - has a piece by Robbie Robertson called "Shine your light" which he wrote for the film, HAVING NOT even seen it....and if you check youtube will see it's been added to many, many tribute videos... Legends of the Fall - James Horner Lord of the Rings - Howard Shore Black Hawk Down - HZ 50 First Dates - included a song by Israel Kamakawiwo Ole's, "Somewhere over the Rainbow" which was also used in the TV's ER episode in which 'Dr. Greene dies' Someone like You - included the song "Someone like You by Van Morrison, which has been used in countless productions.... Schindler's List - John Williams (simply beautiful) Pulp Fiction - I mean, how could that scene between Travolta and Thurman been what it was without the twist?
Not to mention the musicals.... Step UP - Youngbloodz Imma' Shine Save the Last Dance - All or Nothing by Alicia Keys Moulin Rouge, which took "Like a Virgin by Madonna" and made it something fabulous and "Come what May" written for the movie...sang by Ewan and Nicole...
IMHO, the movies I mentioned above were perfected by their respective accompanying music.... Lest we not forget Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.....and his contribution to the theatrical industry
I think that some of these movie composers are way underrated. And not nearly as recognized as much as they should be.
Music in film is often and can be, very beautiful.....it's a fact, it adds emotion to what could otherwise be flat...and one dimensional
I have an entire playlist on my iPod of movie scores...I really believe music can make or break a movie. Adding the 'right' song during an emotional scene, a funny scene... I'm thinking right now of "Goodfellas" Soundtrack which had several songs which Scorcese chose that were just perfect...(can't remember which one I'm thinkin' of...maybe the Stones)
Just love 'em.... | |

| movie soundtracks Posted: 5/13/2008 4:07:14 PM | The music in a movie make it all the better. I havent come across songs used during a movie that werent abit good. It was a key factor in Across The Universe ,eh,it was a musical but the songs MADE the movie. I personally recall some scenes from Gone in 60 seconds or Transformers with good songs :) | |
