No sport (unless someone corrects me) that is watched more then the Superbowl world wide.
......ahmmmm!........last time i checked, i believe soccer is the most popular team sport worldwide, and no event is watched more than the soccer WC!
There is no other sport on a weekly basis that keeps millions at home or in bars or actually at the game.
........in North america perhaps!........although the image of NFL football is well known around the world it is the least (of all american sports) that is played anywhere else...!
Only my opinion and I think many would agree that the NFL is the creme de la creme of the sport world.
......sure, if you feel that the boundaries of the WORLD end around N. America!
I love Football! And so many do also. Look in the stands when you watch the games. We paint our faces. We ware the team colors and expensive Jerseys. We come to think certain players are Gods it seems. Some ware no shirts when it freezing out.
.......you love what you love because you grew up being exposed(brainwashed) to it........if you came from australia you'd be saying the same thing about australian football!...i also grew up in the states and have watched the NFL (along with all the other popular media driven sports) since youth.....but as i grew older i recognized that it was little more than a stage for the sponsorship to saturate the minds of the viewers!.......no sport in the world!!!......has as much breaks to kow-tow to the media as does the NFL.....there are actually "media" personel on the sidelines that tell the officials when to resume play (any knowledgeable fan can tell you this)........thus, if you wanna say that you are in love with the NFL game and all its trappings well that is certainly okay!.....but for you to say that it is the most wonderful event in the world not only shows your limitations but the fact that you have been brainwashed!.....i don't mean this in a negative way, because this is the whole intent of the commercial sponsorship which props it up, they love when the fans view it as a 'religion' so they could sell more ads and charge a premium for it!.....but they realize that there will be a good number of pple who will be hooked to it, and a certain portion who won't!

Soccer... hey it is a hard sport, to run around back and forth all throughout the game bouncing the ball off your head and stuff. But come on its so played out and boring to me guess I am brainwashed but I am glad I am

That is not a true statement I guess I can disagree with you there. The Least? I do not care if our kind of football is played anywhere else.
I respect your opinion if you like another sport better. But to call Me or even those that love the NFL as "brainwashed" only tells me. Who is brainwashed? I have heard and read many times that Soccer fans will fight each other and beat each other till many are hospitalized. And you say we are brainwashed? Hey dude..... its just a game. How many stadiums in Europe has this happened to? No respect for other fans. And you talk about...."little more than a stage for the sponsorship to saturate the minds of the viewers!" Come on the only thing good about soccer is that these countries that play each other and the fans fight on the field and in the stands. I think the fights get more attention then the sport

i love putting people in their place
the Superbowl is ONLY watched by 90 or 125 millions of people (mainly in USA and Canada because we the rest of the world don't give a shite). only USA and Canada care about it really.
talking about people at home or in bars/pubs watching games, nothing compares to us Europeans! we Europeans stay at home and in pubs watching our football teams, and i call it football because it is football, using any FOOT and a round BALL. i bid you to come to Spain, England or Germany, then you will see people in pubs drinking beer and watching their beloved teams! and for painting faces and wearing jerseys, well again i bid you to come to Europe, you will really see people wearing shirts!
any of the World Cup or the European Champions League is more watched than any other sport, and it is easy to confirm it.
baseball, ice hockey and american football are a joke if compared to the people who follow and view football!
and as for football fans beating or even killing, well they are hooligans, so sometimes they cross the line................. but you should not forget that any football supporter is more loyal than any other sporting fan. and i can assure you

Pedro said: baseball, ice hockey and American football are a joke if compared to the people who follow and view football! No that's the real joke if you believe that! That your football is Football.
Seems to me that when the NFL was in Europe this year (Giants played Miami) I saw that the stadium was full with Europeans watching the game. And to me seeing anything in Europe I will pass. I have no interest in your sports. I would compare it to golf just very boring.
I might say maybe so many watch your sport in your country as you say is because maybe your choices are few and there is nothing else really to watch.
The playoffs are on right now. Take a chair and have a and enjoy your self

But come on its so played out and boring to me
.....whether or not you find soccer boring is not the issue here......the issue is how you view your 'favorite' sport (NFL football) in relation to other sports...........for you to say that NFL football is the 'creme de la creme' of all sports is obviously your opinion...which is based upon your taste in sports as it relates to what you were exposed to all your life!...you are certainly entitled to have your own opinion, but it is merely an opinion and thats all! ------------------------
guess I am brainwashed but I am glad I am
.......well at least you admitted it so i gotta respect your honesty here! -----------------------
That is not a true statement I guess I can disagree with you there. The Least? I do not care if our kind of football is played anywhere else.
......well if you can find me an NFL style league that is thriving (besides the CFL)outside N. America, i would like to know about it!.........the NFL has tried many times to set up leagues in foreign countries, the last of which was NFL europe (i'm sure you heard of it) that folded last year gasping on its last breath!..............now compare this with: baseball, basketball & hockey which have strong footholds in many countries that have produced many quality players!...but now if you "don't care" if NFL football isn't played anywhere else then how could you say it is the 'creme de la creme' and viewed by millions around the world? -----------------------
But to call Me or even those that love the NFL as "brainwashed"
.......you can only be brainwashed if you go around thinking that your favorite sport is the best sport in the world.......although it may be your favorite, but there is no way that you can say it is the best among all other sports........this has nothing to with how popular (or unpopular) it is!........i would say the same thing about someone who was a soccer fan, hockey fan, etc! -------------------------
I have heard and read many times that Soccer fans will fight each other and beat each other till many are hospitalized. And you say we are brainwashed? Hey dude..... its just a game.
.....i never said that soccer fans were not brainwashed(in europe).......they are just brainwashed in a different way, they are brought up to think that their team takes on the identity of the fans, ...so anytime someone insults their team, they take it personally!...and this is something that is not seen with most fans in N. america....and that is why it seems odd to american fans when we see european soccer fans fighting their rivals......it is because it is a personal passion! ----------------------------
I respect your opinion if you like another sport better.
.......what i've said about the NFL is not because i prefer other sports!.....i happen to like american football (i'm glad that my home team GIANTS beat DALLAS ! )...i said it because i hate it when the sponsors (and NFL) tries to brainwash me into accepting 2 hours worth of commercial ads (not counting half time)while watching a 1 hour game!...i understand that they have to advertise but i think its outta control with the NFL more than any other sport!..........years ago, Vince McMahon (of the WWE) started a rival league called the XFL (you may remember it!) because he said that the NFL had become to much of a commercial product, and that the fans would prefer a more streamlined game!...as soon as it got started, the NFL quickly took steps to put it out of business..it got fewer sponsors because the NFL said that if it took off it would draw more fans and cut ad time!........the XFL only lasted 1 season!

| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/14/2008 3:50:13 AM | Ever taken a VCR and taped only the actual plays of an NFL game, pausing for everything else ? For a 3 hour game there's only about 30 minutes of actual playing. At least in soccer those guys are running around all the time. Though, I'm not sure they know what they're doing all that time. | |

| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/14/2008 4:04:15 AM | hockey- take that stupid instgater penilty for fighting away. the game was played alot cleaner before.
take away the loser point, no free point for taking the game to ot or so. 2 for a win 0 for a lose. also extend ot buy 5 min of 3 on 3.
take away those silly goalie no touch zones.
have the refs only call it if its a real hhok not just simply touch a guy with a stick. hooking the stick si allowed but its called all the time now.
" *Hockey* . . -for icing- If you can make a legal[successful] pass from behind your own goaline - to the opposite Blueline . . Why is a *Barely*- missed-pass . . from _outside_ your Blueline still considered *Icing* . . ?? "
emm that rule was changed, if the ref see's that it was intended to be a pass he can rule hat its not an icing happens all the time now.

A lot left at half time cos it was boring.
The world cup and the European champions league are popular all round the world. Comparing the viewers of NFL to the world cup is a tad silly. The world cup final gets over a billion viewers worldwide.
Hopefully the real football can take off in America. With all the hispanics there now.

the comment shows its ignorance at first sight and really it does not deserve any answer, but i shall answer of course
First, there were lots of Americans at Wembley watching Giants vs Miami (soldiers from the US armed forces who are serving in Britain, etc) , most of Europeans at the stadium just wanted to know what an american football game is like. those who really liked the sport were a tiny minority. i did know that Wembley was going to get sold out, it was not a surprise! but believe me, it was mainly people wanting to see or experience what it is like or to see just an american show.
Second, when it comes to american football, we Europeans don't give a shite, and it is true! and let me tell you that England is perhaps the country with worst feelings or thoughts towards american football, you know why? because England is a football and rugby country, and rugby players do not wear that silly protection of helmets and pads. just a scrum cap to protect the ears and no more!
by the way, most of the NFL Europe teams have disappeared, if i am right only several German teams still survive (Germany is the ONLY European country where you may find some real american football fans).
just a final note friend, if i had been to England at the time of the game, i would have gone to the stadium as well. does it make me an american football fan? no it does not! i know nothing about it!
by the way, here in Spain we have lots of sports so our choices are not few, say, football, rugby, Basketball, handball, field and roller skate hockey (the best of all kind of kockey) bullfighting,, etcccccccccccc

| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/14/2008 12:32:45 PM | | at 17, i also know from experiance that you can talk til you are blue and it wont change a thing. however i do think he is right about the NFL. it might be a powerhouse sport in the united states but worldwide no way, not even close. soccer, basketball, hockey and baseball all have more worlwide recognition than football (NFL). i love football as do many americans but dont forget its an american thing. the superbowl is absolutley not the largest sporting event. just enjoy the giants victory and hope the best is still to come. dont try to convince the euros of anything unless its about soccer, rugby or how much the united states sucks. anything else and you will be beating a dead horse | |

| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/14/2008 12:48:03 PM | Thanks fishernick
I have beaten dead horses before, seems to me its still fun
I have watched there games. I could just walk away as if it was my X watching soaps.
To me American football is the Football I love and I do not need any Euros telling me my sport is a poor version of there sport. That might be the case in there eyes but not mine. But America made Football better and I truly believe that. I am sure I will get slammed again by the 3 of them. As to my ignorance and what other BS they will throw. OK So now I know that it is not the most watched sport in the world. Like who gives a flying

Yes, I remember the XFL. The commercials were better than the "games." The NFL didn't kill the XFL. The XFL killed the XFL.

That's because it SUCKED!
..........it sucked compared to what???.......and just what did you expect from a 1st year league....if the XFL had been allowed to thrive all along, i would guarantee you that (if it was run right) it woulda put the NFL to shame........through its political and business connections, the NFL made it very hard for a rival league to survive........Vince McMahon even said that he didn't have "enough savvy" to do battle with the NFL, when he announced that he was folding......at the end of the season, he realized that he was gonna lose far more money than he originally projected!.....you tell me how that came to be!
The commercials were better than the "games."
...says you!..........well i hope you enjoy all 2 hours of commercials when you watch an NFL game......and these are commercials that you are indirectly PAYING for if you have cable or satellite dish!
|
| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/14/2008 8:27:42 PM | The XFL was a farm league. The NFL already has farm leagues called College Football, Arena Football and the CFL. (In Kurt Warner's case, there was the check-out line at the grocery store). Sorry, but there was no room for another one. The XFL got as many viewers as the WNBA. It's just that, the WNBA is not a farm league. | |

To pedro et al...instead of bickering back and forth about a subject completely irrelevant to the thread, I'll ask you this: NFL fans - what rule changes would you implement to improve your game?
Soccer fans (sorry for using that term, but I'm canadian, to me football is played with helmets and pads): What rule changes would you like to see in order to improve your game?
