| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/14/2008 11:04:57 PM | OK out of the last 20 postings, I only see ONE that applies in any way whatsoever to the topic of this thread. Thanks smack, for "trying" to get back a hijacked thread...I see your attempt failed miserably, but it was worth a try.
To pedro et al...instead of bickering back and forth about a subject completely irrelevant to the thread, I'll ask you this: NFL fans - what rule changes would you implement to improve your game?
Soccer fans (sorry for using that term, but I'm canadian, to me football is played with helmets and pads): What rule changes would you like to see in order to improve your game?

NFL: Allow the offensive line to move around before the snap. Why the hell are the rules so stacked against the o-line?

| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/15/2008 2:32:57 AM | I've already stated before: In NFL football, get rid of the kickoffs after scores. Only have a kickoff to start each half. After each touchdown, the opponent gets the ball at their own 20 automatically. After each attempted field goal, the opponent gets the ball at the spot of the kick. If a team attempts a 50 yrd. ( make it or not ) field goal it had better be worth it, because they give their opponent the ball on their own 40. If a punt lands out of bounds it's treated the same as an incomplete pass and the opponent gets the ball back at the original line of scrimmage. Receivers should only have to come down with 1 foot inbounds instead of 2. Overtimes should simply be an extra 5 minutes of play whoever scores the most wins. Instant replay should be only for disputed touchdowns, except in the last 2 minutes of the game then for everything else. I wouldn't mind seeing them get rid of the hard plastic helmets and go back to the old leather helmet. I think that would reduce the number of neck and spinal injuries but I doubt it would ever go through. | |

| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/15/2008 10:59:44 AM | 17 again said: " i do not need any Euros telling me my sport is a poor version of their sport. that might be the case in their eyes but not mine.........American made football better and i truly believe it..... the Superbowl is the most watched game in the world".
you fail and fail again and again and it seems you will never stop.
american football comes from rugby, both rugby and proper football were introduced in North America by the Brits at colonial times. and north americans were playing both sports for long time without any problem. however, north americans always preferred rugby to football, the reason why they felt better with rugby was because the preferred the use of hands carrying the ball (as in rugby) to the use of feet (as in football).
during the 19th century, americans started changing some rules, so a 'new' sport was about to appear (what you now call american football or NFL sport), however, the 'new' game was still quite similar to rugby. in fact forward passes were not allowed in american football or NFL until 1930 more or less (as it is not allowed in rugby).
therefore, not only your sport is a version of rugby in my eyes but yours as well, at least you should recognise it.
by the way, i am tired of repeating that the Superbowl is NOT the most watched game in the world. how can a game with only 90 or 100 millions of viewers be the most watched? surely it is the most watched in North America, but not in the world unless you think the world is only formed by North America.

| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/15/2008 12:46:06 PM | Hi, sum1reel! Checked your blood pressure lately?
..........it sucked compared to what???.......
Compared to actual football.
if the XFL had been allowed to thrive all along, i would guarantee you that (if it was run right) it woulda put the NFL to shame
In what way? With fireworks in the endzones? Yeah, I'm sure the NFL felt ashamed it didn't think of that one.
through its political and business connections, the NFL made it very hard for a rival league to survive
Actually, all the NFL had to do was sit back and watch the XFL deliver an inferior product.
Vince McMahon even said that he didn't have "enough savvy" to do battle with the NFL, when he announced that he was folding......
He found out what works for wrestling doesn't work for football.
at the end of the season, he realized that he was gonna lose far more money than he originally projected!.....you tell me how that came to be!
The games sucked worse than he thought they would. No viewers = no advertisers.
Now just because I'm disagreeing with you on the merits of the XFL, that doesn't mean I'm not with you on the overcommercializing of NFL games. I'm 100 percent with you there.
Used correctly, Tivo can be your friend.

| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/20/2008 6:06:47 PM | Basketball -- not so much a rule change as actually enforcing an existing rule: If you intentionally foul to stop the clock toward the end of the game, then it should be called an intentional foul and the offended team gets two shots and the ball at half-court.
I find the sport unwatchable anymore because of the stupid tactic of fouling to force free throws. Any sport in which it is routinely advantageous to commit an infringement of the rules is fatally flawed.

| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/21/2008 10:05:41 AM | | to smackemhard, you think they should take away the loser point given to the team that loses in overtime or shoot out. What I think they need to do is make ALL games worth the same (3 points). A regulation win should be 3 points, OT win 2 points OT loss 1 point and get rid of the stupid shootout(a poor way to decide a game). This way 3 points are awarded in all games and each game is worth the same. | |
|
| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/21/2008 10:21:12 AM | | I think they should make a regulation win 3 points, OT win 2 points, shootout win 1 point and 0 points for any loss. They have alreadyt determined that a win in OT/shootout isn't as valuable as in regulation...and with no points for a loss, the emphasis would be on winning the game as early as possible. No more playing for OT with 10 minutes remaining in regulation | |

|
| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/23/2008 7:54:25 PM | | i think you should put the NFL all star game on the off week between conference finals and the super bowl. obviously anyone players who are in the big game will be replaced by the next in line. i think the united states would eat that up and keep more focus on football during those two weeks. i am not sure but i dont think the all star game does that well and im surprised they havent tried something like this. maybe the NFLs thinking is they want to stay focused on the superbowl but two weeks is two long. | |

| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/24/2008 3:14:02 PM | | I have seen in most sports that some players intentionally try to hurt other players or the superstars of the game to try to win. I feel they only get a slap on the wrist. I say personal fouls should not only be fined. But they should lose there right to play period. Out for the year! With no pay! | |

| Rule changes . . Improve a sport . . Posted: 1/24/2008 3:29:27 PM | | or to add to what 17 was saying what if the intent was proved intentional then they are suspended twice as long as the injured party. if the intent was to injure but no injury occured then they should still be heavily punished. i dont know about a year but i agree that the consequences need to be much steeper to detour such behavior. | |
