| What nonsense gets dribbled in these forums... Posted: 1/3/2008 3:51:55 PM | I said don't live in fear not live stupid.
Please stop interpreting me so extremely. If you google yourself and see what information is already available you are not exactly opening yourself up to evil by essentially re-releasing that information.
I simply can't control what I can't control. I can control what I'm knowledgeable of though and that is power that everyone has to exercise. There are reasonable steps to take to protect yourself and then there are extremes. Sheltering yourself due to the fear of the release of information, which can be gained readibly from other on-line sources, I would consider an extreme and a waste of energy.
Just my opinion. | |

If a person's goal is guarding their Privacy, then yes, each time you post information about yourself, you are increasing the number of cross-referenced results in the search engines and other databases, thereby driving yourself up in the search results rankings a nd reducing your level of privacy.

Hey Mister Mann.....your posts led me to peruse your profile. Seems you are the MALE me.........LOL *flashing Mensa Membership*

| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 1/7/2008 5:18:01 PM | I'm not happy with Facebook in general. One of the things on my to-do list tonight is to see if I can set my computer up for the applications on it that I like (there's really only three) without using their services.
I was encouraged to join by a friend who said it was lots of fun but the friendship has deteriorated recently so there isn't much point in that regard.
I also know that it's used a lot for "did you see what she just said" types of purposes which lead to brain numbing discussions back and forth about whoever has the misfortune of being on today's sh!tlist.
Time to close my account.

| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 1/30/2008 6:37:28 PM | I had quite a few of my PoF friends on my Facebook. All were either on my favorites
list or I was on theirs. With all the new applications on FB.."meet new people".".Are you
Interested" etc...Its quite common to see someone from PoF.Ive seen dozens from here.
I leave it up to them to add me if they like

| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 1/31/2008 9:31:26 AM | I had someone from here look me up on facebook. They told me later they had done it and I really didn't mind. I had told this person my whole name, so it was easy to look me up. I don't bother with the privacy screens mostly because I have nothing to hide. I think this person read my facebook to see if I was the same "face" here as there. It just gave them more insight to me as a person.
The truth is, there is a lot a person can find out about you from many sources. You just have to decide how much you really need to hide.

| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 2/4/2008 5:34:58 AM | Collecting friends on Facebook is a harmless activity. As far as people who have stalking tendancies - it's actually safer than having them show up at your door. Lurking is a great way tool to connect with someone. I smile to myself now as I think of my Facebook Friends and how easy it is to keep in touch. It's a great place to get a Topic for conversation - don't know how many times my kids have said, "Hey, you've been lurking again". At first they were like "What the....." and now they expect it. I feel connected to them and all their friends.
Facebook is an easy way to share pictures with friends/family that are away. That's how I'm tracking my kids around the world. Wherever they are, I can see a day in their life. I personally don't bother with the applications - although I think Photos is application and I definately like that one.
Choices. | |

| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 2/4/2008 1:38:11 PM | I've heard several parents comment on how they like the way they can keep track of their kids and if no, their friends are telling them, 'have you seen your child's facebook lately?'.
I've got a little sick of facebook actually. I just find I don't have as much time to spend on it as some people and now I feel like I'm neglecting people at times I never really felt obligated to in the first place.

| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 2/4/2008 2:32:36 PM | How about Facebook being so random. It throws surprises our way. You just never know who you'll hear from. You'll see........ Haha, so and so is getting married - again? Yeah, how many times is that? Awww. what a cute couple. hee hee and all the kids are in the pic, count those kids, how many is that - 8 I say and a family pet - sweet. Don't they look happy. POST Congratulations you happy couple. Done - no card, no mess, no fuss. And what better way to remember birthdays! Even gives you a warning that so-and-so's birthday is approaching. Agree LBP - when I check my email, I receive notification of who wrote on my wall or tagged me a photo and set some time aside to have a look. Like most though, the computer is never far away and don't we check mail way to often, while working, typing, creating, or doing whatever we do with these things. There is no internet where I work so I don't know what happens for most people. Do people who work with a computer get to check their mail whenever they want or is it monitored and restricted? | |
|
| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 2/5/2008 1:41:46 PM | A lot of places are restricting due to the level abuse and I have to say I'm actually one of the ones for blocking msn/facebook from work computers. The reasons are it can cause HR problems if you have some staff very busy seeing this is how other staff are spending their time and also, if you have work to give someone, you might not give them the work because they "look busy" when they are actually busy with that kind of thing.
I see my personal emails coming in through msn but never check during the workday. For most I think its a matter of how much time they have on their hands while working.
Your work can't monitor your personal email but they can monitor your professional email. Most IT techs/employers don't have the time to do this unless there is an actual complaint submitted about your abuse of their equipment. Most places I know just block access to certain websites or put administrator restrictions on your computer so you can't even load things like msn on it.
|
| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 2/5/2008 2:11:50 PM | Where I work they have firewalled facebook and msn downloads from all the computers in the district. Our IT dept said the number of hits on facebook in one week was so crazy they shut it down completley. Funny, I think they have even done it for the sears bagain centre too. | |

| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 2/5/2008 4:12:07 PM | I was just starting to enjoy myself on Facebook.I had a really interesting group of
ppl on it.But..unfortunately the Facebook team decided I liked to talk too much and
disabled it.And for those who do not know this..YES..Facebook has a limit on how many
msgs you are allowed to send.Three strikes and you are out:o(

I send WAY more than 3 a day In fact, when planning a Sat night out, me and my friends are mass emailing
|
| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 2/5/2008 7:13:53 PM | | He's not referring to sending three messages per day. He's saying that they tell you three times that you're exceeding the message limit, then they delete your facebook account. By someone saying that they message too much for facebook rules, I would have to logically assume that the limit would be more than three messages per day. | |
|
| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 2/5/2008 7:22:25 PM | Here is what I found:
Why won't it let me send more messages? You have been temporarily blocked from using this feature because you exceeded a Facebook limit that is based on the speed and quantity of use. These blocks prevent spammers from abusing the message features. Your privileges will be restored within a few hours.
I have never received warnings and I guess he received 3 and chose to ignore them

remains...I am right about the limitations on facebook.Challenging me on that point
will not change the facts. This information is readily available.

| From POF to Facebook....tracking you down Posted: 2/8/2008 2:46:48 PM | I think I'm going to do a clean house on facebook this weekend and get rid of all those freaking apps and disable any kind of notification. I like the pluses of facebook but am thinking of getting rid of it still. I love how you can share pictures on it and plan things with your friends though.
I just feel a bit overwhelmed with all the notifications and requests that fly in.
