He shouldnt have pushed it if he didnt like the result.

Tell him to tell her the unvarnished truth. And, that he really cares enough to want to be careful for both of their sakes. Tell him to tell her flat out, that he isn't wanting to see anyone else (if that is the case) and that he just feels like things are being ''rushed".

I think he should talk to her and explain how he feels... if they care about each other i am sure that its the best option for both of them...rather that than him bottling up his feelings and going all quiet on her and leaving her wondering what's going on ? ? (voice of experience here )
