| Science in the movie I Am Legend Posted: 1/8/2008 5:51:04 PM | You can tell something about the age of a deer by the size of its antlers and the number of points on each. Four points means four points on each antler, 8 total. There's a common folk belief that they grow one point per year on each side. That isn't true but still, in general their antlers get bigger with age and with better nutrition. Thanks for clearing that up, doll. I lacked the testicular fortitude to ask as "settle for me" did, but was curious as well.
But you have to admit, your garden variety movie goer will miss such things, rendering them $ unimportant, yes?

The areas around Manhattan, just outside the boroughs are chock full of deer, particularily north up the Hudson,Westchester, Orange and Rockland counties. Ive seen large herds grazing within sight of the Palisades Parkway and the Thurway. Problem is, in the movie, they supposedly blew the bridges.

So? The garden variety movie goer would miss everything we're talking about in this thread.

They don't need bridges. Apparently deer can swim surprisingly well:

But there still wouldn't be many because the zombies would eat them.

This is where I beg to differ. If the Zombies were like any other night predators they would keep the deer population in check but would not get rid of them completely. I don't think there were so many deer that it seemed unrealistic. I'll let you be the judge of the 4-point deer after 3 years, though. I'm not a hunter so I can't comment on that one.
Did anybody figure out whether retaining electricity after 3 years without maintaining the system would be feasible?

| Science in the movie I Am Legend Posted: 1/9/2008 9:52:56 PM | | Been a bit since I watched this, but after the first hunting scene and he races back home, they showed a line up of gas powered generators. I would assume that's where he is getting his power from. | |

| Science in the movie I Am Legend Posted: 1/10/2008 7:28:18 AM | Another item that I found defied logic was when they used the cab as a counterweight when they caught Neville in the leg snare.
Not sure how people on here have made leg snares but to do as such you have to find something that will either possess the spring energy or needed weight to lift the desired object from the ground into a suspended position. This was exhibited when Neville captured the female infected woman using the snack cart.
The cab weighed far more than Neville and the snare probably would have torn his leg off or at the very least severely dislocated it.
Also...setting a trap such as that would have indicated a degree of intelligen thought that would have made it impossible for Neville to have outwitted such a large group for an extended period.
yes...I know it was a movie...LOL
Thoughts? | |

I thought it was even more unbelievable that he would be stupid enough to get caught in a snare in the first place.
This reminds me of my other big peeve with the movie, although this one isn't a scientific thing. Did I miss something or did they not explain anywhere in the movie exactly why he was immune to the virus? In the book the main character just happened to be this random guy who was randomly immune (or so I gather). In "The Omega Man" he was immune because he'd developed a cure but hadn't had time to hand it out. This one... ?

They did. 90% of the world's population died. 10% survived. 90% of the survivors mutated 10% Did not mutate.
The larger group of survivors killed, and apparently ATE. the overwhelming majority of survivors (although as pointed out in 28 days Later) how would such a virus reach remote mountain valleys and islands?

Yes, I recall that, but it still doesn't work. He just happened to be in the 1% of survivors AND be leading the effort to find a cure, even before everybody died off? Pretty far-fetched...

| Science in the movie I Am Legend Posted: 1/22/2008 4:25:22 PM | I saw it again yesterday and a friend and I were curious as to what Smith was pouring on both his (from a jug) porch and onto his coat in a later scene, before capturing the female "dark seeker"?? Any ideas? | |

| Science in the movie I Am Legend Posted: 1/22/2008 6:49:28 PM | Ammonia or bleach is what I thought it was. They'' cover the tracks of an animal... However, they'll also note that someone has poured them around... | |

I went to lose myself in 2 hours of fantasy,to simply enjoy and have some fun, not once have I felt the need to study or worry about the flaws of the movie .Stop analyzing everything to death .

| Science in the movie I Am Legend Posted: 1/24/2008 1:46:07 PM | Love the film but OMG!!!
It said 3 years later - showing a serengetti type scenery in the middle of new york! With tall long grass and antelopes etc. where did they come from???
How come he was some military general and a world top class researcher??
When he met the woman and her kid, no questions or very little were asked about how she survived and how was she able to burst through like 100 zombies and rescue him?
Also Ive seen the stunt where someone grabs hold of the helicopter and it wobbles around too, would this happen? or would those helicopters be able to steady themselves?
Ahh yeah I always find something to moan about when watching a scientific movie haha.

| Science in the movie I Am Legend Posted: 3/9/2008 8:00:24 AM | | So I just saw Thirty Days of Night, a story about Vampires that invade an Alaskan town right as the sun sets for 30 days. Although it didn`t get the press that I am Legend did, I found it superior. The vampires were a lot more believable than the dark seekers in I am Legend, and I actually felt a compassion for them. Did anyone else see it? The lead vampire told his clan that they had to remove the heads of the humans they ate. I think it was because they did not want anyone else becoming a vampire because it was an existence without hope...Did anyone else see it? | |
