| Question for the photography fanatics out there.. Are there ways to identify a fake pic?? Posted: 1/8/2008 5:08:24 AM |
If you mean "fake" as in out of date...then yes. Look at the background(s) of the pic.Are there items no longer in fashion or technology that's not up to date? I was got a pic from a woman that had a 1999 calendar in the background (This was 2005)
One of the pics I posted is in my Drummer's basement and that was taken a few weeks ago. God knows how much old crude he has down there, feels like the 70's. That's a start for what to look for, but not a deal breaker.
I keep saying this: WEBCAM, they don't lie.

| Question for the photography fanatics out there.. Are there ways to identify a fake pic?? Posted: 1/8/2008 7:42:57 AM | This has not happened to me yet, but considering that it is very possible I am just wondering what is the most polite way to end the date as quickly as possible? I hate to sound like I am being shallow, but if a guy showed up and he turned out to be an overweight, middle aged man I'd like to be out of there in no less than five minutes. Is there really any way to handle this situation tactfully?
It has happened to me ...a couple of times. Although , most women look reasonably like their pictures and sometimes better. When I met the women who didn't look as good as their pics , I didn't run . I don't think they really meant to mislead anyone . If it was really blatantly misleading or a pic not of themselves , I would have been p.o.-ed . I just think they wanted to use a good picture ...too good , they should probably have known this. I did tell them that they looked different than their pics. It won't kill you talk to the person and meet someone new , it's always hit and miss at best when you meet for the first time anyway . I do think it is being shallow to rudely run away unless they were very deliberately misleading you .

| Question for the photography fanatics out there.. Are there ways to identify a fake pic?? Posted: 1/8/2008 8:04:44 AM | actually i've had several lunches with men who looked either nothing like their photo or only had a slight resemblance to their photo
in those cases only because the man in the photo and the man standing before me were the same race, i.e. from india, or because the man in the photo looked like a younger version of the man i was having lunch with
(about 30 yrs younger in one case! i swear the photograph looked as if it had been cut out of his high school yearbook and the man who showed up looked older than the 46 yrs old he posted on his profile! if he hadn't told me in advance what he would be wearing i would never have believed he was the man i'd been messaging!!!)
i try to put pictures of myself that actually look like me, i figure i'd rather have you fully prepared to see the real me than risk a look of disappointment on your face when we finally meet in person! lol
but in all of my dates, i was never rude or even discussed their profile photograph, i enjoyed my meal with them hoping we would still get along in person as we did online
one question, though, since we are discussing photographs: why do men also include photographs of their cars or motorcycles? i don't mean the men who pose with their cars, but the ones who just post a picture of the vehicle alone?

I also don't understand why men, or women - they do it too, post photos of their cars, motorcycles or their horses, dogs, cats, without themselves in the photo.
I have on occasion posted a photo of my boat taken by a friend in another boat close by, while a buddy and I were fishing, for this is after all a pond of fish, and kidding aside I am an angler that enjoys fishing. Yes I was in the boat and I was hoping to attract a gal that shares my enjoyment of the sport. Salmon fishing, at least where I live, is difficult without a boat.

| Question for the photography fanatics out there.. Are there ways to identify a fake pic?? Posted: 1/19/2008 1:48:37 PM | I'm very experienced in Photo retouching ... it's part of my job. Colour correction, red-eye removal.. etc...
But no amount of photo-retouching is going to make anyone 20 years younger or 100 pounds lighter. I could remove a mole, or change the colour of your eyes... even out the skin tone a bit, maybe even soften wrinkles (I haven't tried that.. but it's possible I think).... I can't turn Rosanne Barr into Cindy Crawford though. If I had the file I could probably tell if it had been retouched. It would be easy if an amateur did it.. a little more difficult if it was a pro. The fact that the files are small and low resolution for the web makes it a bit more difficult... but there are signs.
Could you tell by viewing them on site? probably not unless it's a very bad job.
Just my opinion... | |

I flat tell people I don't look like my pics ( at least in my opinion) cuz my cam either loves me alot or feels awful sorry for me...my pics come out far better than I look Damn, I need your camera!
I can not for the life of me take a good picture - I might be missing the "photogenic" gene or something, hmm...
no amount of photo-retouching is going to make anyone 20 years younger or 100 pounds lighter Yeah, that's true, but you can almost do it: http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1758889
(That's actually a lot more "painting" than "retouching", and the final product still comes out looking a little "unreal" - especially the hair - but it's still interesting to watch)

Posted: 1/19/2008 4:12:59 PM | | IMO I don't think you can tell a person is using a fake pic until you actually meet them. Unless it is blatantly obvious such as using a picture of a famous person. It is reasonable for someone to look somewhat difficult in person than they do in a picture. A picture gives a general idea of what a person looks like. But you can't always tell how attractive a person is from a 2-D, still photo. Humans are 3-D. Some people can look better/worse in person than they do in a photo. However, if someone looks completely different in person than they do in a picture, then most likely they used an old, deceptive, or fake pictures.

Posted: 1/19/2008 5:09:53 PM | Like the rest of you, I tend to look seriously at the images on dating sites with suspicion. If its a thumbnail size image of a very good looking person then have doubts. Who sizes an image to a thumbnail size?
I agree with you, RavenStar66, on your points. Photoshop is not a user-friendly app and you can't turn a pig's ear into a silk purse. That said, I've seen make-up artists transform ordinary faces into beautiful ones and I've tweeked and blended an image in rather short time to great effect.
Most people are not particularily good photographers and even those amateurs who are, probably don't have really good photos of themselves. Even working photographers don't "work" when we are with friends, we use happy-snappers and just point and shoot.
So, if the background is perfect, the makeup is perfect and the lighting is perfect... the profile may not be.

Posted: 1/20/2008 10:23:56 AM | It's very hard to detct fraud here, especially that the resoution of the pics after been putted on line by POF destroy evrything. Most of the people here don't have the tools and the know how anyway to fake their pics anyway. However what I found very frequent here is older pics used as contemporary pics and there's even one girl I dated here that was ok looking and had something like 30 favourites after many months here she told me, then after she went to the bay taking pictures of her, she had 100 or so favourites after one week end last time I encountered her profile lol. I feel sorry for the guys who will chase her, she doesn't look at all like her pics. Quit deceptive I would say.
I like photography, and I'm way better BEHIND the camera than in front, terribly camera shy and unable to fake a smile. But at least what you see is what you get with me.
Lots of deception here.
PS someone said they don't understand why we put picture of our pets without us : simple, someone told me my profile was too long, so it allowed me to cut one line lol : allergic people to cats beware !

| Question for the photography fanatics out there.. Are there ways to identify a fake pic?? Posted: 1/22/2008 1:47:45 AM | Two Hawks takes the Talking Stick:
One must also contend with the fact that the picture you see on a profile may have been hijacked from somewhere else and it may not be that person at all. Scammers from Nigeria and Ghana do this all the time. They pose as Americans with the intent to scam money out of Americans
Telling whether a picture has been retouched is very difficult, but not impossible. With the right photo equipment it's easy, but if you don't have that equipment...it's difficult. Fuzzy pictures can be caused by....poor photo equipment such as a cheap web cam, or digital camera; 17th generation reprint of the original from a reprint and any one of a number of things.
So the answer to you question is YES. Pictures can me seen as fakes.

Telling whether a picture has been retouched is very difficult, but not impossible. With the right photo equipment it's easy Well the problem of course is no matter how crisp your image is to start with, as soon as you upload it to PoF it gets compressed (again) and then gets the logo slapped on it.
Trying to spot details that are awry isn't all that easy when 250x250 is all you've got to go on.

| Question for the photography fanatics out there.. Are there ways to identify a fake pic?? Posted: 1/22/2008 4:14:36 AM | If he has only 2/3 pics and they're all from a photo shoot..hes fake.. if he cant give you any more pics or get on cam, or take a specific pic for you (everyone has a camera phone these days) then hes fake.. or if the pics are seriously out of date. .they might be him but hes clearly older and reliving his youth.
Usual rules apply.. meet in a public place tell people where youre going never give anyone your home number or address and if you turn up and hes not the guy in the photo you are well within your rights to say "that obviously wasnt you in the pic, you mislead me and im leaving", if they call you shallow... you can reply with "well you messaged me based on my pic ??? and im actually the person in it - Goodbye".

| Question for the photography fanatics out there.. Are there ways to identify a fake pic?? Posted: 2/15/2008 5:17:53 AM | Although it doesnt really apply on POF because they seem to have some way of making all pics look the same size, I have noticed MANY times on other sites that a picture that is very small is usually not real. It was cut/paste from the web.
Also, as one poster mentioned, several professional pics from the same photo shoot.
I MUCH MUCH prefer women who have a regular pic, sitting at the kitchen table or standing outside Its much more real to me. I would even go so far as to say a modeling photo is counter-productive, since it indicates a good chance that the profile is a scam.
