I have been at the campsite next to the TV/generator--AND THE KIDS ONE. UGH, I hate kids.

I live somewhere where if you walk about a mile or two in, you will see NO ONE for the week-end, so that's what I suggest, not the already laid out forest service campsites.

whitegold Straddie is Great !!! excellent choice , i live in an area that is flooded with campers and due to alot of the regulated area been booked via bankcard etc they camp on the foreshore area here. we get the rowdy ones too so my neighbour gets out his golf balls for practise !! lol . Sometimes you hear a "OI u cant do that " the reply is 'u cant be here its private property" they either tone it down or put up with golf balls wizzn past their heads . i really like heading where no others can be near throw the phones and tv and potable dvd players out the window and become 1 with the sirrounds, and kids learn too. Cheers on a great forum post writter

why does someone who wants the comforts of home go camping?

essentials when camping could be....
tent \ tarpaulin
sleeping bag \ blanket of some sort
fishing rod (to catch food)
fresh water (or the knowledge of how to use a garbage bag for example to get some)
compass, (or knowing the stars)
waterproof bag for things like matches

bu66er the tv, jenny and noisy kids, leave em at home

i love camping around the other end of victoria like bairnsdale and mallacoota in far gypsland area.i love the fishing and the water sports you can do there. I hate it when people stuff it up for everyone by being pigs and cleaning up and i hate it when people destroy the place with there motorbikes and the noise that they make.....some people just dont show any respect for the animals or there environment.

There is a place.... the sand is like talcum and squeaks when you walk on it, so white that it dazzles. The sea is amazingly clear yet just a little off shore has that postcard blue-green look that you always suspect has been photoshopped (its real). OK you relinquish the creature comforts of hot running water and porcelain ablution equipment, linen sheets and aircons....BUT! For days on end all you hear is the sound of seabreezes whiffling through the casuarina trees, that gorgeous thumping crumping feeling/sound of the surf and nary a soul to disturb you, its easy to imagine that you're the only people in the world...at night there are stars so close that you swear you could just pluck them from the sky and that particular light show begins with a sunset that leaves you breathless.... The days can be filled with just lazing about in a hammock reading,snoozing,dozing...or snorkel the reef for a crayfish dinner... The nights softened by driftwood firelight, great SA reds and long companionable silences where you just meld into the landscape....my camping experiences have mostly been in Arnhemland and truth be told...they've spoiled me for anywhere else ...

~ ~ what I hate the most is generators and people who decide to set up camp right next to you when there is unlimited space..

The object of the game, when I go camping, is to have peace, tranquility and privacy, not noisy neighbors with generators who decide to camp right next to me (unless of course the campground is populated.. but if thats the case, I dont go there)

Side tracking a little now but here goes......

My kids were brought up camping, we used to go away at least a few times a year to state forests in Qld, we had a highset house and consequently had 2 fridges, a family room as well as loungeroom, 2 TV's, 2 video players (before dvds were invented) and 2 of lots of things.

Going camping, we would pack up the 4wd with the trailor and the 2 girls would sometimes bring a friend along.. often there would be 6 of us going away.

We ate well, I would cook stews, curries, silverside ect in a campoven,(we never lived on tin food), we had comfy chairs, comfy mattresses and all was very comfortable!

I often thought, here we are living in a house with 2 levels and 2 of "lots of things" and yet we go camping and squeeze all our "comforts" into a 4wd with a small trailor and we still have our quality meals, our warm showers (had a solar bag shower setup) and we never missed out on any comfort.

I would often point this out to the kids, it was a reminder to them I guess that you dont need all the modern comforts of home to be comfortable and you dont need to be materialistic to be comfortable.

{footnote re: generators} I do have a friend who suffers with sleep aponia (I cant spell that word.. lol ) and has to take a generator for the machine which he uses at night, however, he always camps as far away from people as possible so he does not disturb them.

~ ~ ~ also, why on earth would you want to take a TV camping....

Some of the setups I see out there in the bush are just so far over the top, I cant understand why they go in the first place.

water, fire, campoven, bbq plate, shower bag, a tarp for shade, those cheap camping chairs which have the holder for the glass of wine (thats very important... lol), weather proof tent and a self inflating air mattress, a table and a few buckets for carting water and washing up will accomodate my needs nicely... oops nearly forgot the rid and the wine lol

Gypsygal, you described exactly what my camping was like. We would never be uncomfortable, unclean or unfed. My kids loved baths out camping.

I bought a brand new rubbish bin (you know the plastic ones we had before wheelie bins came in) would half fill it with river water, put the black lid on and leave it in the sun all day. After tea, I would top it up with cold river water to cool it down to an acceptable level, because sometimes it would be boiling hot after sitting in the sun for the day, and put in a child, give them a bath, dry them off, pop the jammies on and sit them next to the campfire, pop the next child in and do it again. They new that they would only get to have marshmallows if they stayed in their seats....that stopped from getting dirty again before bed. I started a trend and soon enough all the friends who camped with us had their own 'bins' for bathing the kids in.

I love camping, minus the mod cons and next to a great big waterhole.

The main thing that shits me is sharing a site with diks that think they have to have music blaring till 3am and 8 cartons of Bundy between 6 people to enjoy themselves.

Dammit....I was in the city today and whilst walking past a huge disposal store I was sucked inside like a black-hole, and a few hundred dollars later I could leave...
-Couple of new work shirts (safety orange of course) - also to justify the spending.
-Really cool LED torch, (small, black aluminium) also has green LED, for night time map reading, also included a matching laser pointer, both military grade
-Microfibre towel, good for camping, swimming etc
- G-Shock watch (needed new one, replace every 4 yrs) for work (need stop-watch)
-Pair of Arnette Sunnies (Handy for harsh desert sun) and look pretty good (the glasses I mean)

^^^^^^^^for household use - Energizer AA Hardcase LED about $20 - good quality construction, good illumination, and very tough. Sorry hard to type in the dark with my new sunnies on......

Good thing about LED, better quality light and almost impossible to break, as opposed to the old tungsten filament bulbs, that only seem to break in total darkness.....

Umm, in my experience camping either means rain or sex!

I'd like to say that when it rains it pours, but I mostly just cop the rain. These days not even Mrs Palmer wants to go camping with me

Have to admit the thing that annoys me most about camping is camping.
Is it not just a holiday for people who cant actually afford to go on holiday??

Sadly, Hilly, that is very accurate

But I love it anyway. I did once think that 'how come I'm the only one who doesn't get a holiday when we go camping, cause i'm still cooking, still cleaning, still chasing after the children, still....whatever

It just seems more acceptable when you are doing all of that stuff whilst camped on the side of a river, with good friends, good weather and good alcohol... and I don't feel guilty about drinking before 'beer o'clock' when I'm camping.

I remember being about 15 years old and my cousins were camping in the Watagan Mtns, so we went for a day trip to visit them.
Up until that point, the only time I'd been camping had been with traps, ferrets and rifles....I remember pulling my Dad aside and asking him what they were actually doing. What was the point if you weren't hunting....Surely they weren't just hanging out for fun?....wouldn't that be a bit boring?....I think Dad was a bit confused too, but they were family so you had to go along with it.....

As the years went on I learnt to love it.....I did lots at Bike rallies all over the country for a number of years, and then National parks and Fraser etc with my wife and kids...

I'm actualy thinking of getting a big dirt bike and some basic stuff so I can head to Fraser on the weekends and just "get away from it all"....And no I won't be taking guns and traps...lol....maybe a couple of bottles of Brown Bros Everton to make the nights a bit more relaxing around the campfire. I don't want to get a 4WD as a bike is easier to have and get into out of the way places.....and more fun too.

As far as I am aware you are unable to take dirt bikes, or any other type of bike, onto Fraser Island as it is protected land. You may want to re think that.

Well I'll just stay on the mainland or similar.....I think it's strange that you can take a 4WD onto Fraser with 4 huge tyres tearing up the sand, and yet a bike isn't allowed....Oh well....

QueenVO7..... I can hear you loudly and clearly re "not having a rest when camping".... lol... used to be the same for me when it was the family unit.

I wouldnt have changed it for anything though!!!! I enjoyed the campoven cooking and all the rest of it. The kids had their jobs to do and everyone was on a roster re fetching the water and wood, dishes ect...

little lady it cant be all that bad, but then again it all depends on who you go camping with, when my kids were young..[damn thats a long time ago] it was all about unwinding and having fun, get dirty, enjoy it and after dinner it was clean up time and l was the dad and the mum.
then throw on some cow pats...have to be dry ones... and no bugs came near us..[then again nor did anyone else].
didnt need loud music or alcohol to have fun.
do remember one morning waking up to a goanna eye balling me,squealed like a **** on heat l did ,when the kids came running out l told them a drop bear fell on me had them looking up to the trees for the rest of the week.
