Posted: 1/4/2008 8:10:14 AM | Other posters have posted that a food diet with everything in moderation is the best way to go, and I would agree, although for someone with a chocolate addiction a square or two of chocolate may not be enough and it is tempting to eat the whole bar.
Don't think by any means I am preaching to you but anyone who knows me will tell you I'm no health freak I can consume chocolate at a fantastic rate of knots and I've cooked a full english breakfast for a few people on here. I think it is more down to your metabolism it noticeable that people who are over weight seem to do everything much slower. I went for a few long walks over christmas and I think it helps alot to burn off the excesses.

Not only did it help me lose 2 stone in a little over a month last year, it completely changed my eating habits. I despised fruit and veg before going on that diet, but ever since then, I can't get enough of them, and it taught me the benefits of cooking my meals from scratch, with all fresh ingredients.
As long as you eat sensibly in between doing the 1 week diet plan (1 week on, one week off worked best for me), take a good multivitamin, and do a little muscle excersise during the protein stage of the diet, the weight will literally drop off with none of the detrimental side effects scaremongers write about on the net.
I started the diet again last week, replacing the actual soup with Holland & Barrett's cabbage soup pills this time, since after doing the diet a few times the smell of the soup can make you feel nauseous -- my christmas weight is already gone.
Keep in mind though, that no matter what diet you choose, if you don't eat sensibly after coming off the diet, the weight will come back. Use diets to kickstart a healthy lifestyle, that's the only way the weight is going to stay off.
Good luck to anyone trying to shed the pounds.

Posted: 1/4/2008 10:22:24 AM | Also another tip (recommended by doctors) is if you are on a diet that gives fast weight loss such as Lipotrim and diets like that, or Cabbage Soup, or even gastric bypass, it is a good idea to take Zinc and Selenium tablets which can be bought from any health food shop.
A side effect of very fast weight loss can be hair loss and the above supplements can possibly help with that.
A side effect of fast weight loss can also be the development of gallstones, so as we all know anyway, a slower rate of weight loss is better, but sometimes severely obese people need a fast loss immediately to help with their diabetes, joint problems, or for a loss before a surgical procedure.

| What diets have you tried? Which ones worked for you and which did not? Posted: 1/4/2008 10:59:30 AM | I will put the self made diet i am following.. Lets start with my job as it may explain some things.I am a van and wagon driver who works on an "on call"basis on express deliverys. In other words i am your actual "white van man" Oh and i am milk intolerant so cereals etc are off the menu. I have breakfast. If i am at home its crispbread with margerine or butter on.And a mug of fruit tea.If i am rushed i will have a mug of fruit tea and buy a bacon butty while i am at work/working.I make a travel mug of fruit tea to take with me. Lunch is usually a shop bought or made sandwich with a health food type bar as a sweet. No crisps needed. Tea is usually a home cooked pasta or rice dish with grilled or baked meat,ie chicken or turkey. Pasta is quicker.A handfull of a shell type pasta with a handfull of mixed veg cooked in a sauce base usually only takes 8 or 10mins to cook.By which time something like a turkey escallop is ready.Another mug of fruit tea as accompaniment lol. Rice can take about 20 mins. I sometimes add veg and chopped bacon to a packet of savoury rice to make a rather nice meal. I have lost roughly 32/36 lbs in the past year following the above. That may not sound very impresive.Put it another way: I was wearing 4xl size shirts and they were tight. My trousers were 44/46 waist and likewise. I am now in 2xl shirts and theres room in them.40 waist jeans and i need a belt to keep them up. My aiming point is 38 waist jeans and xl shirts. I was over 25 stones in weight. My target weight is 18 stones. The last time i was able to weigh myself on scales i trusted i was just over 22 stones.Thats a lot i know. I am 5`10 tall and fairly strong so i carry muscle as well as fat.Muscle weighs more than fat. My diet works for me.I thank my ex girlfriend for showing me it though.. Andrew. | |

Posted: 1/4/2008 1:00:31 PM | Concerning the fact that slimmer people know when to stop eating and more obese people don't, it is because slimmer people have a hormone called PYY. (Put 'PYY hormone' into a internet search engine).
The body can manufacture PYY after a protein rich meal. So for those people who need to lose weight and are often hungry, munching on grilled chicken breast slices, boiled eggs and meat slices, is more likely to make you feel fuller longer than if you snack on anything else.
Anyone who is hungry try a 300 calories sandwich on one day and a large grilled/baked chicken portion (without skin) the other day and compare which keeps you fuller longer.
Having said all that though, a balanced diet is important and always take a multi-vitimin and mineral supplement.

An ex who was drip thin had to eat every two hours otherwise he got moody and irritable. On holiday together, we had to eat different things! One tip I heard was to eat with chopsticks as it makes you slow down and it gives more time for the 'full' signal to reach the brain. I've also got the Paul Mckenna 'self hypnosis' CD. Anyone else tried this?

| What diets have you tried? Which ones worked for you and which did not? Posted: 1/6/2008 5:06:32 PM | I've tried pretty much every diet under the sun now.
When I got pregnant with my first child, (almost 18 years ago) I developed Pre-eclampsia in the last three months of my pregnancy. I went from 10 1/2 stone to 23 stone in that time! Size 30 in clothing.. it was awful. I woke up one night in absolute agony with blood coming from my hands because they'd swelled up so much my rings were cutting through my skin.
Losing the weight since then has been a real struggle. Out of everything I tried, there have only really been two that worked for me.
1) Atkins diet - though this was a case of doing the induction part for a couple of weeks, coming off of it, then going back on to it and over and over. It was cool because I could still pretty much eat most things, and it didn't feel like dieting. I soon found when I wasn't eating the carbohydrates, I wasn't craving them either.
2) Cambridge diet - very similar to lighter life, but tons cheaper, lots more flavours to choose from and not as much water to drink. This was really successful for me. Lost 2 1/2 stone in 10 weeks. Dropped 3 clothes sizes, self confidence was blooming! I've been off of it for 2 months now (mainly due to the run up to christmas, no point in dieting, I knew I'd be enjoying the christmas goodies and the christmas/birthday drinks) and I'm happy to report I've only put 4 lbs of it back on. I'll be going back to it shortly, as I have the last 2 stone to lose before I get to where I want to be.
Never in a million years if someone had told me I would lose over 10 stone in weight would I have believed them. People are so judgemental when you are that size. They assume you're lazy, stare at you when you eat anything, and all think you've 'snarfed' yourself to being that size. Was the most depressing time of my life and was living in the States at the time. Thank God we didn't own a gun, because there is no doubt in my mind that I'd have used it.

Totally agree Rob I regulate my diet depending on what type of work I am doing as well and when I have had physical jobs in the past I used to eat twice as much but then I was cycling to and from work as well. Obviously there are genuine medical reasons for being overweight but for most normal people if you eat less you you don't put weight on simple as.

| What diets have you tried? Which ones worked for you and which did not? Posted: 1/7/2008 5:14:30 PM | Oh, I forgot about Atkins, tried that too of course...
The funny thing was that putting all my shopping at the till at supermarket, the cashier took one look at the stuff, another at me and said "Atkins, huh?"
I stick with my Mc Kenna now "I can make you thin" - small book, read in one day and strangely seems to work
Fingers crossed.... | |

| What diets have you tried? Which ones worked for you and which did not? Posted: 4/8/2008 11:49:57 AM | I lost 2 stone in 2 months by cutting out snacks, getting shot of white bread in place of salads and by doing a whole lot of running (about an hour a day). Since I have done so, I have maintained a moderate exercise regime and not 'pigged out' too often.
It is all about calories in and calories burnt. Listen to the previous poster!

Posted: 4/10/2008 5:04:16 AM | | i lost just under 5 stone in 5 months. to do this i walked 6-9 miles a day by walking to work and was very careful about the amount of calories i consumed. I have a bad habit of snacking so replaced those with salt and vinegar rice cakes and just made sure i was burning more calories than i was consuming. definately worth it in the long run for those few months sacrifice!

| What diets have you tried? Which ones worked for you and which did not? Posted: 4/10/2008 5:26:46 AM | I am not a fan of fad diets at all its just another form of blooming torture!.If certain food groups are banned as a way of dropping the pounds then the body will start to crave a substitute anyway usually causing the "dieter" to cave in at some point to binge eat. If the desired weight loss method is a very low calorie controlled way then in the short term yes the weight will come off but what happens when they revert back to eating normal amounts again? The weight +some will go straight back on!! Obviously we should all be eating sensible balanced diets ,excersising reguarly and avoiding eating large amounts in the evening but lets face it if it was as easy as it sounds then there wouldnt be an obesity problem in the first place. So the "diet" i have settled on is the "stick to wine and banoffee pie only at the weekend" one,so far so good she says whilst pushing her love handles back into the sides of her jeans

| What diets have you tried? Which ones worked for you and which did not? Posted: 4/10/2008 5:45:09 AM | I tried the 'not having as much beer' diet - that didn't work (the alternatives are just as calorie laden)
I tried the 'bit of exercise bike and lots of yoga, plus cut out fatty food diet' (not that I actually have much fatty food) - that didn't work either.
So now I do the 'don't go crazy with food, and do more than half an hour's concerted exercise at one time' diet. It's difficult to say how things are going, because biking makes you put muscle on, which weighs more than fat..
I'm not overweight, but at one point I found myself pondering some larger trousers - so I'm sorting it now, before things get worse (it's worked! I've gone up to the highest notch in my belt and lost a very small amount of weight in the last few weeks).
