You, know, I dont want a black pres or a white pres. I want a good pres.As far as a black man winning from a mostly white state, I am proud America is not the same as we were 50 years ago as far a blacks being left out of any type of office. Obama seems to be a sensible man.Hilliary seems to be a, well dont know a word for it, but someone I would not want to be a pres.Edwards seems to be just power seeking. These are my opinions on their personalities,I am not a political person so I dont know muh about their views, except I did read something about Edwards that turned me off.Honestly, I dont even know if they are rep or dem.

Congrats to Obama. Perhaps this will put an end to the careers of the race baiters like Sharpton and Jackson.

It should be a special moment for ALL Americans, regardless of skin colour.

The change that's occurred just in my lifetime, is remarkable.

I was very shocked with both candidates who won in Iowa. I've always stated that Obama was a good one, but I always felt and still feel he is not seasoned enough, and Huckabee? All I'm going to say about Huckabee, is that all of us who believe in religious freedom in our country better pray (no pun intended) that this man is not our next president.

I personally am focusing on McCain, but.....Obama has caught my attention, and I will be watching him closely. Hillary, I do not feel she is a great female example to be running, she lost my vote when she stayed with a cheating husband, she showed the world she is not as strong as she proclaims, therefore, I do not feel she will have the "women's" vote overall due to her husband.

Nope, they probably never will be satisfied.

From Sharptons speech. Not sure when it was made.

I have come here tonight to say the only choice we have to preserve our freedom at this point in history is to elect John Kerry the President of the United States.

And Jackson thinks Obama acts 'white'.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/09/19/jackson.jena6/index.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson criticized Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Tuesday over his reaction to the arrest of six black juveniles in Jena, Louisiana, on murder charges, accusing the Illinois senator of "acting like he's white," according to a South Carolina newspaper

I am not sure of the accuracy of the statements of Sharpton or Jackson.

It would not surprise me if Sharpton or Jackson made those racist statements, don't get me started on those hate mongers!!!!! I think Obama did good, and as I stated earlier, he now has my attention, I'll be watching him more closely now. :)

As an Iowa Caucus voter I would like to make a few observations.

Obama's grassroots campaign worked. Not only did he pull Independents into his camp, but he pulled middle aged *have voted Conservative* before voters.
He concentrated on the get the young vote out and man it worked! Not only was it a voter turnout record for the Caucus....it just smashed it!

I noticed a significant age difference between the camps of Hillary and Obama. Obama had a young energetic crowd and Hillary's camp was much more aged.

I think the record turnout can be attributed to Barack. The message of change, hope and less political bickering struck a cord with many Iowa voters.

I thought I had Iowa figured out.

Iowa is a lot more complicated then you think. Many political pundits have been washed up on shore thinking they have Iowa figured.

I am so proud of my State today!

I think it's rather insulting of Barack's talent to mention his colour twice in the OP.

The result also shows that Iowans aren't as 'racist' as might have been previously thought - the voters there were obviously not concerned about his colour.

Given that the US is our closest ally, and the most powerful nation on Earth, I'm more concerned about what the next president can do for the world and Great Britain, regardless of his colour (or gender, for that matter).

The US will one day have a black president. It will also one day have a female president.

Congrats are due to him today, but there is a long way to go.......

Davey:

You are absolutely correct. You along with other's comments on this thread is proof that the world watches the Presidential elections here within the United States. You are also correct in my eyes in reference to the U.S having a "ways" to go as of current, I personally was very disappointed when Colin Powell did not run for president, but I felt he was intelligent enough obviously to know that during that time, it just couldn't happen in reference of a African American President.

I too feel someday our nation will have an African American President as well as a female president someday, I'm proud of our nation as a whole for viewing candidates as they are, and what they stand for, not the color of their skin, our nation wants change, and I do believe it's coming, no matter who is elected, now if that's going to be a good thing or a bad thing? Time will tell on this issue.

Do you think it really matters when new people are elected if engineers of U.S policies remain as key advisers to the candidates?

'Obama’s top adviser is Zbigniew Brzezinski. Brzezinski gave an interview to the French press a number of years ago where he boasted about the fact that it was he who created the whole Afghan jihadi movement, the movement that produced Osama bin Laden. And he was asked by the interviewer, “Well, don’t you think this might have had some bad consequences?” And Brzezinski replied, “Absolutely not. It was definitely worth it, because we were going after the Soviets. We were getting the Soviets.”

Another key Obama adviser, Anthony Lake, he was the main force behind the US invasion of Haiti in the mid-Clinton years during which they brought back Aristide essentially in political chains, pledged to support a World Bank/IMF overhaul of the economy, which resulted in an increase in malnutrition deaths among Haitians and set the stage for the current ongoing political disaster in Haiti.

Another Obama adviser, General Merrill McPeak, an Air Force man, who not long after the Dili massacre in East Timor in ’91 that you and I survived, he was—I happened to see on Indonesian TV shortly after that—there was General McPeak overseeing the delivery to Indonesia of US fighter planes.

Another key Obama adviser, Dennis Ross. Ross, for many years under both Clinton and Bush 2, a key—he has advised Clinton and both Bushes. He oversaw US policy toward Israel/Palestine. He pushed the principle that the legal rights of the Palestinians, the rights recognized under international law, must be subordinated to the needs of the Israeli government—in other words, their desires, their desires to expand to do whatever they want in the Occupied Territories. And Ross was one of the people who, interestingly, led the political assault on former Democratic President Jimmy Carter. Carter, no peacenik—I mean, Carter is the one who bears ultimate responsibility for that Timor terror that Holbrooke was involved in. But Ross led an assault on him, because, regarding Palestine, Carter was so bold as to agree with Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa that what Israel was doing in the Occupied Territories was tantamount to apartheid. And so, Ross was one of those who fiercely attacked him.

Another Obama adviser, Sarah Sewall, who heads a human rights center at Harvard and is a former Defense official, she wrote the introduction to General Petraeus’s Marine Corps/Army counterinsurgency handbook, the handbook that is now being used worldwide by US troops in various killing operations. That’s the Obama team.

Just a thought and to take into consideration. Their advisor's are as important as they are. I found it interesting. Have a listen to who the other advisers are.

Each candidate have their own advising team who have an interesting history. Not exactly the puppeteers but help steer them in the direction they need to succeed. And in order to succeed you need to satisfy certain powerful groups, not the public. NOT YOU!.

One issue I keep hearing come up again and again regarding Obama is his qualifications. I believe there truly is nothing that can prepare you for the presidency. Some of our most revered presidents (Washington, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Reagan) had very little to claim as qualifications. Many people thought Kennedy was too young and inexperienced to run when he did, not to mention the fact that he was (gasp!) Catholic! At the same time, many of our most "qualified" presidents (John Adams, Andrew Johnson, Lyndon Johnson, Nixon, GHW Bush) had major problems in office which they did not handle well. Experience is no predictor of success as a president. Obama might be another Kennedy, he might be another Jimmy Carter, we just can't know until he does the job.

I am very happy for Obama, I am very happy for the advancement it shows, but I have to bear a slightly wet blanket.

This was a democratic primary and so only democrats voted. The democratic party of the past 4 decades has always been more progressive. This is a great moment to be sure, but truely it does not show as much hope as some have professed. Until we see independants and republicans also voting for him will we have cause for hope that at last the barriers have fallen.

Obama is not my personal ideal canidate but I would vote for him when the election comes if Edwards does not make it.

Jr Senator says:
ou still see color more then who can help you the most...... & you wish it to go away? ~Jr_Senator

I cant help but take extreme joy as a black man in this country when noting a significant moment in Black American history unfolding in front my eyes.

However this doesn’t mean that his race is the only reason that he got propelled to the front. Actually in spite of his race his message is what pulled people (mostly white) to support him.
This means that the racial lines are being blurred and the character of the person is the deciding factor......... That was the goal of the great civil rights leaders of the past who paved the way for Barack, and now they... like fallen soldiers posthumously awarded with medals to honor them, Barack himself is the "medal" that honors those like M.L.King.

That’s the important part, his message, not his race earned him the decisive victory
So Barack actually did two things:
1. Made history in America by uniting people to his side (as will be seen in upcoming NH and NC primaries)
2. And gave Americans hope that this country can be repaired and moved in the right direction.

After sleeping on it and understanding America as I do, this does seem like a pick for a guaranteed G.O.P. Lock for the presidency. Obama's being put in place to assure that a republican will be the next president of the United States.

I agree that it is his message that pulled people to him. His speech last night was fantastic. Although I am a Clinton supporter, It makes me feel good about America that a man of blended race could win an election, [caucus] in a state that is predominently white. I'm not sure if he can maintain momentem through all of the primaries to come in order to be nominated. But I will vote for the Democrat, whoever it is, and I'm a registered Independant.

Hey Javon2

I heard the same thing from a friend of mine last October, additionally claiming that if Obama wins the Neo-Cons will use an Obama presidency as an escape goat for all of Bush's screw ups.
I dont see it going down like that.

The democratic party will be firmly behind Barack, the coveted Independents will be the next largest group to give Barack the majority of their support (as seen last night). To boot he's pulling Conservatives over to his side as well!!

Theres no "spoiler" like Ralph Nader this time around to thin out the Democratic / Independent vote.

This time its the Republicans who seem to have a fractured electorate based on various issues which will help Obama as well.

Politically this is probably the best time in history for an Obama presidency.
Bush has jacked this country up so much that even die-hard conservatives are contemplating a vote for Obama!!!

I don't understand how anyone could support Hillary. She hasn't told the voters what her views are on the subjects that are asked. She beats around the bush to much and does not give direct answers. She will lose the nomination because of this

I am an independent and I like Obama. My friends seem to tell me that if he wins the Presidency, it will only be a matter of time before there is either an assanation or an attept on his life. I think this is rediculous I like Obama and what he stands for. He is a great speaker and very well educated.

Javan, just savour this victory for now. It's an important step. Don't be so pessimistic and throw in the towel before the fights even started. Have some hope.
Wouldn't it be great to be proven wrong on this?

"Put in place" by whom, exactly?

And most people think that if Huckabee's the GOP nominee, that will guarantee a win for the Dems, regardless of who the nominee is. Go, Huckabee!

I think you're right. I wouldn't vote for Obama, he has almost no political experience. I've only ever voted for a Republican presidential candidate once, and this might make it a second time.

When this whole thing came up I was hoping that Obama would wait until he had at least one term under his belt and a voting record. This was NOT the time for him to run.

What I don't understand is race (or sex) being a reason to vote or not to vote for a candidate. I'd hoped we would be past such things by now.

My friends seem to tell me that if he [Obama] wins the Presidency, it will only be a matter of time before there is either an assanation or an attept on his life.

Oh Lord, I sure hope not. Even though I would not like to see him elected (and I think there's very little chance he would be) any person who puts their azz on the line to take on this awful job deserves our support.

I watched Obama speaking in New hampshire a little while ago. The more I see him speak, the more impressed I am with him. He seems to me to be a sincere and intelligent man...and sincerity and sometimes intelligence are not qualities that I usually associate with politicians. I really hope that he does well, and if he wins the nomination, I'll be happy about it. However, I really don't beleive that he can be nominated. I beleive that Clinton can and will be nominated, that's why I support her. To me, the important thing is getting a Democrat back in the White House.
