| Where are all the sci-fi lovers? Posted: 1/7/2008 12:10:15 PM | [/ Hmm the orginal Star Trek was OK, Stargate is a fun romp, very good. Aliens and the Thing prolly two of the best sci-fi films ever made, along with any film made from a Philip K****book, Bladerunner, Imposter, Screamers, Total Recall.]
I've had the pleasure of meeting quite a few of the cast of Aliens (including Hicks - Michael Biehn) and got chatted up by a guy from Bladerunner, but my favourite person from all the above movies was Michael Ironside (Total Recall, V) whom I met at a convention, a wonderful person who called a friend of mine who couldn't make it just to say Hi!

Trust me i did.. as a 7yr old when the BBC radio done a re run to celebrate something or another.. My dad was a sci fi addict, and sunday afternoon he would listen to the broadcast.. as a child i can remember been scared.. as it was mainly done as a news castor, reporting on the spot .. Did i think it was real!!?? bet your ass i did.. with tears to prove it.. i really thought aliens had invaded the planet.. and were destroying earth Thats the one and yes a few people did at the time and there were reports of suicide as they did not want to be harvested by the aliens and mass hysteria ... I have a copy residing in my tape collection that i should get round to transferring to cd or mp3 so that i can enjoy it again without fear of losing it. but also the Jeff Wayne version rocks So many times turned the stereo on at night turn the lights down and just sit and listen :)

since a star can support life like our star does for us(the sun) and there is more stars in the universe than there is grains of sand on our planet!! billions of lifeforms, but to many lightyears between us

| Where are all the sci-fi lovers? Posted: 1/7/2008 3:40:41 PM | humm I started loving sci fi at the age of five listening to Journey into Space with Lemmy.
Graduated to Arthur C Clarke Asimov et al and have loved all the styles and types ever since had a crush on Warf lol lol
I have on dvd every episode of Babylon Five ever made and am not ashamed to admit it. Was told by a doctor friend that I was a very strange woman cos women do not usually like the 'heavy stuff' like Asimov, lol.
Cannot remember who wrote the Mars trilogy but would love to get them again.
So some of us oldies love Sci fi too
Regards to all you alien lovers roflmao

| Where are all the sci-fi lovers? Posted: 1/7/2008 4:04:25 PM | Yep, Sci fi for me.. Trekkie to the core. If it starts with 'star'. I'm in there. Bladerunner, Asimov, most everything. Sat and watched Barbarella, Queen of the Universe on Sunday. What about Flash Gordon, with the queen soundtrack.... I just looked at my DVD collection, and I guess it's about 70% sci fi. Same with my books.... Dune, I, robot, some Clive BArker, and Douglas Adams too.. Hitchikers Guide... Stuff of my youth!!! :-)
And one of my favourites is on as I write.. Predator.
Live long and prosper. :-)

I thought that The war of the worlds was going to be a right stinker (Made by americans & starring the oompah loompah of the film world). But I'll be totally honest in the fact that I think it's one of the best sci-fi films out to date. Still not as good as the original though, but at least the new version kept true to its predecessor.
I thought the remake was a pile of cr@p myself (and the old yankie version wasn't much better either!)! The only version that kept faithful to the H.G Wells book was Jeff Wayne's Musical Version, i.e set in London in Victorian times! I wish they would hurry up and bring the CGI film out of it! Anyway don't think I don't respect your opinion though SR, I was just giving mine!

Posted: 1/8/2008 11:40:04 AM | Bluebrummie I totally agree with you that the Jeff Wayne version was miles above the rest as the best, the song for 'Thunderchild', 'Forever Autumn' & 'The Red Weed' still leave goosbumps running up my spine. In fact I might listen to it sometime in the next couple of days.
The American's always make it seem as though they save the world when in point of fact it's them that's doing the most to destroy it.
I thought they kept pretty true to the original oldie though, but I was really glad to see the return of the tripods.
Found a clip of the new film on youtube, think you should take a look I thought it was quite funny.

| Where are all the sci-fi lovers? Posted: 1/8/2008 3:27:33 PM | Grew up around Sci-Fi most of my life, especialy being a child of the 70's. Big interest obviously started with the release of star wars and then got the comic side of it from the Radio Four production of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." (by far the best version, second only to the books themselves).
I tend to like the older Sci-fi books to be honest as i read some of my dads stuff as a kid, with authors such as E E "Doc" Smith (Lensman Series), Asimov & Arthur C Clarke, but my favourite turned out to be A.E.Van-Vogt.
Have loved Sci-Fi ever since in pretty much all it's forms. Some people like their romance novels, some like their action films and others like to try and figure out whodunnit, at the end of the day it is all just an escape.
PS: Jeff Wayne's 'War of the Worlds' is one of the greatest recordings ever, Phil Lynott as Nathaniel is one of the most powerful performances of all time (but then again i am a biased Thin Lizzy fan too).

| Where are all the sci-fi lovers? Posted: 3/25/2008 7:49:54 AM | I have read/do read an awful lot of sci fi stuff, some good, some lousy. I particularly like Asimov, Piers Anthony, Julien May (a bit fantasyish too) and Anne McCaffrey (although that is a bit 'sci-fi for girls'). Actually, I've read that much, it's all blending in together while I'm trying to pick out some goodies. Who wrote Golden Apples of the Sun? Ray Bradbury? Read a lot of his stuff after being introduced to a short story of his at school (the one with the time machine and the butterfly). A lot was stuff of my ex husband's that I don't have now.
As for watching sci fi, Dr Who and Torchwood are must sees. The original 3 Star Wars films are classics but didn't think so much of the 2nd 3. Stargate, loved the film, loathe the series. I don't tend to go for watching it as much as reading it.

| Where are all the sci-fi lovers? Posted: 3/25/2008 9:43:38 AM | | I hate sci-fi. Was never in to Star Trek, Battlestar Gallactica etc. Liked Star Wars when I was a kid but have seen none of the newer ones. A genre i don't find at all interesting. | |

| Where are all the sci-fi lovers? Posted: 3/25/2008 11:19:56 AM | I read various sci-fi/fantasy (Robin Hobb Peter F Hamilton, Greg Bear, earlier Neil Gaiman (he's up his own arse these days)) as well as various classics, non fiction etc.
TV wise I enjoy Doctor Who and must get around to watching the rest of Farscape some day. Never been a huge Trek fan.

| Where are all the sci-fi lovers? Posted: 3/25/2008 11:21:01 AM | Can you believe it all manner of different Star Trek series Deep Space Nine, Enterprise, the next generation ( too squeeky clean) the original series and then a whole series devoted to Voyager -lost in the gamma quadrant with very little chance of finding the way home and with insufficient fuel- been driven by a woman- who said Scifi was far fetched? I think though if you look carefully most of the mainstream SCi Fi is akin to a soap opera in the stars.
Still the Imagination of the originall Star Trek writers takes some beating Phasers- now reality communicators again now reality time travel via slingshot around the sun- theoretical Androids- getting there transporter beams- Not yet or likely and yes I must admit to being a sci fi lover- but not that Dr who Tosh!
