Does it have to be star trek and star wars, although ok. I have just watched the Scanner Darkly, excellent film, read the book by Philip k****yonks ago. Has anyone seen Dark City.... also excellent. Prefer books to films though.

a modern sci-fi author who is utterly spellbinding is Iain M Banks (he also writes contemporary fiction, including "the wasp factory", "crow road" as Iain Banks). Incredibly dark and inventive, "against a dark background" and "consider phlebas" are utterly amazing books

I started by listening to Movie-Go-Round on radio (should that be wireless?), when they played excerpts from the film of The Day of The Triffids. (Boy, does that date me, as it was made in 1962!) This led me on to the mistake of reading John Wyndham's book - and then all his others. Then I found Clarke's Profiles of The Future in a second-hand book shop and read all of his works I could get hold of... then Asimov's oeuvre - and I haven't stopped since. And I re-read all of them several times over. Is it an obsession?

I prefer the older SF to the newer and books rather than film or TV. I like using my imagination, and don't enjoy the interpretations of others so much.

Became very jealous when Ruffy posted this:

Proud collector of 1939-1970 Sci-Fi paperbacks and US Sci-Fi Mags (Astounding etc)

I have only read anthologies of the "best" of those magazines, to be able to touch the originals - wow!

One book I read in the early 60s was called The Death of Metal. I wish I could find that one again - I am not sure if it was a good book, a frightening book or just a "cool" book to read at a time when all my mates were into Mills and Boon!

Not sure its not wanting to "admit" it, its just irrelevant really, and with so many assumptive paranoid types who lack the intellect to move beyond generalisation on places like this whatever you say you like is likely to be assumed to the extreme and interpretted in a negative way anyway

Although that said, and considering how little people say about themselves on profiles anyway if someone who said hardly anything else did say they liked scifi then it would seem as tho they were an uberdorky geeky nerdy type who lived in a total fantasy world (other than the online one) and had a very loose grasp on reality

Some scifi is ok, some is ace and much of it is total meandouring crap, but to just say "I like sci fi" without qualification would sound like you like ALL scifi, which in turn could easily suggest you have a severe dissassociation with reality

My favourite fiction is the news tho, but its nearly always a repeat

I love sci fi stuff and always have. The reason I don't list it separately on my profile is that it comes under TV/DVD/Films etc.

I've never seen anyone list Eastenders or Coronation Street on their profile. Or even just soap operas. Someone probably has somewhere though.

Star Wars was the big one for me and still is. Got all of Babylon 5 and Stargate on DVD too. The new Doctor Who and Torchwood are fantastic as well.

Lets not forget that it could be tomorrows future in some ways. Remember the communicators from the first Star Trek series..... well we all have mobile phones now don't we.

Yeah we all do, I love a good sci fi / fantasy movie - but as soon as we start talking sci fi we start to sound like a bunch of nerds....

The older I get, the more I appreciate the old back'n'white classics - "Earth vs the Flying Saucers" , "The Day The Earth Stood Still" , "The Thing" , "The Blob" , Quatermass etc

For the Star Wars lovers out there, have any of you seen the Kurosawa film "The Hidden Fortress"?
I sat there like some geeky kid (which lets face it, I still am) pointing out where Lucas got the characters and special effects from.

I've still got a soft spot for my childhood favs such as "Space:1999" , "The Black Hole" and I still get all soppy teared up at "Silent Running" but for modern day Sci-Fi I think Firefly is utterly made of awesome.

When Firefly came out I refused to watch it as I still grumpy with Joss, but then when the movie "Serenity" was coming out, I finally caved and watched the pilot. The next day I bought the boxset and had a massive marathon session. Damn that show was too good to have been cancelled :(
